Kalahari Trails

Kalahari Trails is situated on a private nature reserve just 35 km south of the main entrance gate to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park at Twee Rivieren, in the heart of the red Kalahari dune fields. Here we offer visitors a unique chance to wander on foot through this awe-inspiring landscape, where the sky and the rolling sand dunes give the impression of limitless space, and the bowl of the heavens stretches from horizon to horizon.

At Kalahari Trails, visitors can experience a Kalahari that they would not see from a car. Although all local game species are present here, as well as nearly 200 species of birds, it is the small creatures that make this desert so unique. Join us on our guided walks and drives and come to learn about and appreciate the amazing bio-diversity of this region.

Kalahari Trails offers a wide range of accommodation at reasonable prices. The main guest house commands impressive views of the Nossob riverbed and the dune fields stretching to the horizon. The house features a large veranda where guests can sit in comfort and visitors are also welcome to use the braai facilities.

For bird-watchers, there is a small waterhole in front of the house where flocks of desert birds come to drink every day. We also have a small botanical garden with typical plants found on the Reserve. For those chilly winter evenings, there is a large, comfortable living room with a fireplace as well as a small dining area seating up to 12 people. Kalahari Trails is set up for self-catering, but groups can be catered for if we are given notice of this at least 10 days in advance.

There is a large communal kitchen which is fully equipped with everything necessary to store and prepare your food, including refrigerators, freezers, gas cookers, a microwave oven, toaster, all cooking utensils, dishes, cutlery, and glasses. We also have a small shop selling basic foods, snacks, a wide array of soft drinks or beers, meat, and wood for braai fires. We recommend that guests bring their fresh food with them because this is difficult to obtain in the desert. Upington has several supermarkets with a wide choice of available foodstuffs.

"Most enjoyable setting, interaction with meerkats and hiking on the farm, but the 'guesthouse' should be called a backpacker and needs urgent repairs, modernization and TLC."

"Catarina was really nice she showed us around and let us be part at the feeding of the meerkats. She told us much about these little animals. Thank you Catarina!!!!But I have to say if the house would be just basic (what we knew before) it would be totally ok for us but the house especially the kitchen was very very dirty. There was also a group at the same time they just left their dirty dishes standing in the kitchen. In the morning we couldn't hardly find one clean cup to drink tea for breakfast. Also the bathroom is terrible, not clean and very old!"

  • "Kgalagadi Weening"

    25 September 2013

"The decision to make the return to 'civilisation' more gentle by staying at Kalahari Trails was definitely the right one. The lovely setting, comfortable rooms and the chance to interact with other travellers made the stay enjoyable but the icing on the top was talking to Prof Anna."
