On your next visit to Barkly East in the Eastern Cape, why not stop at the old house of Charlie Wakeford, Charlies Place Guest House, now owned by Frikkie and Irmgard Tauber. The 1950s house, with its modern interior and farm-style finishings, offers four fully furnished en-suite rooms each named after family farms, namely Fairfield, Celidon, Knighton and Locksley. Two large family rooms and two houses are now available too.
After a good night's rest and farm breakfast, head out and enjoy the many attractions the scenic landscape has to offer. The well-known Tiffendell Ski-Resort, hunting, fly-fishing, horse riding, hiking, 4x4 routes and Bushman paintings are just some of many adventures on offer.
"Charlie's Place on the photos looked such a nice place place to stay, when we arrived there we had a shock of our life!!! It looked nothing like the photos! We knocked where should have been the reception, eventually a Lady opened and said we must go round the back. We went round the back - it looked like a boarding house - we had to go through the kitchen - it had a terrible smell. She showed us the room - no decent person could sleep there - the room could not lock, it had no key. We had paid the full amount of R2000 for two nights for this dump.We got into the car and went to another guesthouse that was totally the opposite. We paid R2000 and would like our money back as the photos is definately not reality!!"
"This is a perfect place to stay, the rooms are clean , comfortable , warm and safe. The Hostess, Irmgard is friendly and very helpful. Nothing is too much bother to her. Her little extra touches were much appreciated, and her advice about where to eat supper was just lovely as well. We had a memorable stay and will certainly be back to visit Barkly East again and use this accommodation when we do. Without any hesitation, I can wholeheartedly recommend this accommodation."
"This place is in dire need of maintenance and cleanliness. The pictures tell a fairy tale, whilst the reality is totally different. A place to avoid!"
"The establishment's landline phone does not work and the cell number listed is never answered. It is therefore cannot be contacted."
"Very clean and comfortable. Good sized room and bathroom with separate shower. Quiet and peaceful. Good value for money."
"The place was neat, tidy and clean. For a overnight stay it was ok. On the negative side, the first night there was no rooibostee tea or milk. That was rectified the next day. The bed lamp did not work. Although the place was for 4 people (we were only 2) there was only 3 coffee mugs, 2 unmatched glasses, and the cutlery was also not sufficient. The towel hooks in the bathroom kept on falling off and there weas no place to put your soap and shampoo in the shower. The tap on the shower came off and the shower head could not be adjusted"
"We recently took a road trip through the Eastern Cape, and stayed over at Charlie's Place in Barkly East. The accommodation was comfortable, quaint and welcoming. We did however make the mistake of not taking the establishment up on their offer for meals, thinking that we would have dinner at a local eatery. The only place that was open was a sportsbar, with the food being only OK. From Barkly East we could explore the area - a trip to Rhodes (60km gravel) being memorable!"
"Excellent accommodation, will recommend it for any person."
"Unfortunately we were very disappointed with Charlie's Place. Nobody to receive us or to show us our accommodation. We could only leave voice messages and did not get any reply. Guests had to show us our accommodation. We booked a free standing unit with its own entrance. We learnt from the guests, who showed us our accommodation, that it was a room inside a house. Fortunately the Old Mill Inn could help us for the 4 days at a photographic congress.<br></br> <b>Establishment's response</b><br></br> <i>They booked the room Locksley (specifically because it also has a bath). There was no specific requirement about the room being stand alone.<br></br> On arrival when they saw the room was in the house then this issue about it being in the house came up. Lida my guest house manager tried to assist them but they were only to eager to leave. I would just like some proof from Is where he requested stand alone accommodation. Because that was their whole issue. The room they booked was specifically kept for them.<br></br> Regards<br></br> Irmgard</i>"
"Nice people, good place to stay."
"My wife and I spent Christmas 2012 here and they looked after us really well. Our room was peaceful and attractive, and the spacious lounge and kitchen were perfect for relaxing between visits to ouma at the old people's home. Dinner was a feast and the goodies for breakfast were appreciated. Thanks!"
