Cavers Country Home is a 4 Star graded luxury accommodation in a 140-year-old double-storey manor house and thatched garden cottage, which are both situated in magnificent garden and mountain setting. The stone-built guest house was built in 1860, as can be seen from the spacious rooms, high ceilings, wooden floors and wooden staircase. There is throughout a sense of graciousness seldom found these days.
The house has been superbly modernised to the highest standards to provide all modern conveniences without compromising the essential ambience. All rooms are provided with DStv and Wi-Fi. Guests can pick and choose from four luxuriously appointed en-suite bedrooms. All the bedrooms offer delightful views either onto the garden or over the beautiful Cowie River valley to the mountains beyond. The lounge is huge and comfortably furnished with a fireplace to make the room cosy on cold nights.
For the convenience of our guests there is a separate sitting room equipped with television and an honesty bar. The gracious dining room looks out onto a patio and a private garden with a large swimming pool which are for the exclusive use of the guests. Elsewhere in the grounds stands a charming cottage offering two spacious and comfortable en-suite bedrooms.
From the kitchen comes fine country cuisine. Farm lamb, beef and venison, prepared to your preference with a home grown selection of fresh farm vegetables. Candlelit dinners are served in the dining room of the main stone double-storey homestead. A traditional barbecue around the pool or in the veld under the African stars is also a favourite. English or continental breakfasts are served on the patio or in the guest dining room. Homemade bread, butter, preserves, cheese and yogurts are offered.
Activities available to guests include tennis on a clay court, hikes and walks through forest and hills, game viewing, birdwatching with 250 species to spot, mountain bike trails, fishing for bass and trout, and swimming.
"We had heard a great deal about Cavers and the beautiful gardens over the years hence selecting to stay there and not in Bedford. We were not disappointed. Roze was a lovely hostess yet we were puzzled why she left us to our own devices during our stay. Being the only guests we would have liked more interaction with the family. The old house and its contents was enchanting and our only criticism was the cost of dinner - what was provided did not match up to what we had to pay."
"The best which was not great was the cooked breakfast. The establishment is in a run-down condition needing much TLC. The road to it is also in bad shape. The hosts never appeared to welcome us or bid us a safe farewell and travel. The setting and old-world ambience is wonderful but the creaking floors could disturb the late lie in residents. At the rate charged one would expect more attention.<br/><br/>Establishments response:<br/><br/>Dear David,<br/> <br/>We were saddened and extremely concerned to read your review.<br/>I do apologise for not being here personally to greet you, your request of the earlier arrival time of 11 am unfortunately prevented this, however, Nosamkelo our manageress was here to receive you and we met a little later on.<br/>I shall certainly look into your complaint of the lack of TLC however we are constantly aware of the attention to detail.<br/> Unfortunately, we are experiencing the worst drought in recorded history in the Eastern Cape which has had an impact on the overall atmosphere, garden and surrounds of Cavers however since your visit we have received rain which hopefully is the beginning of our summer falls so we look forward to the return of a lush Cowie Valley. We value your opinion and invite you to visit us again so that we may have the opportunity to alter your opinion.<br/><br/>Warm regards,<br/>Rozanne<br/><br/><br/><br/>"
"Very comfortable accommodation in beautiful house. Friendly and efficient service. Lovely surroundings. All in all, a great experience."
"A friendly reception on arrival and magnificent accommodation in an 1800's house wth high quality furnishings. The meals were outstanding, good home cooking.Unfortunately the drought has caused the once magnificent, prize winning garden to suffer, but this doesnt detract from the overall excellence of the stay"
"Such a lovely place with old world charm and warm and helpful hosts. Rosie made us an emergency dinner after we drew a blank in Bedford, on a Saturday!<div><br /></div><div>The rooms are lovingly restored, spacious and gracious. Breakfast was excellent and, of cousre, the beautiful setting and garden completed our very satisfying experience.</div>"
