"I have mixed feelings about this place. I stayed in the superior suite for my first anniversary. I informed the hotel about this and that my wife is vegetarian. I was told we would receive a complimentary massage and have the table set up (decorated) for dinner on the night of the anniversary. We received the massage (awesome), but they seemed to have completely forgotten about decorating the table which was disappointing. In the hospitality industry, instances like this can spoil an entire trip for a guest. The main course vegetarian option for dinner on the anniversary evening was a vegetarian wrap with chips, something I pay R20 for at my lunch canteen. The vegetarian main course option for lunch the day before was a veg skewer with a piece of haloumi, a piece of mushroom, a rosa tomatoe and an onion. Albeit in addition to the starter salads. Let me remind you, we paid R1800 per person per night for this place. We went on a beginners horse ride one morning, and the trainer just told us to jump on without any instructions, he couldn't control the horses and told us to control them better (as beginners without instructions). On the upside, the facilities are excellent, the hikes are beautiful, although some of the longer hikes could use some additional markings at significant splits. We received a small bottle of sparking wine on our way out which I appreciate. What makes a great stay is usually great service. When you feel like people are going above and beyond for you. I don't expect this from a R1000/night hotel, but I do expect it from a R3600/night hotel who knows I'm on my anniversary. My stay was unfortunately let down by poor hospitality."
"Loved the family orientated atmosphereYour staff were all friendly and helpful without exceptionFood was yummy! So glad there was always salad and fruit tooRooms/facilities comfortable, clean and conducive to relaxationYour dogs and cat add a special touchA three day stay is too short!!"
"The Cavern is an absolute gem! Am so glad we found it and will definitely be going back! The price was all inclusive (excluding drinks and the Spa) and our every need was catered for. Tucked away in the foothills of the Berg, not only is the location stunning, but so is the layout of the resort - there's a place for everyone and the meals were fantastic. It's also a nature lovers paradise and you have your pick of activities from hiking (many trails and guided walks), horse riding, pool, table tennis, a library, entertainment area, horse riding, tennis and bowls - something for everyone. :) Loved every minute of it!"
"Accommodation, location and food was great. However they dont consider or should i say neglect to consider parents with small kids during dining times.IF u have kids...best look elsewhere."
"Enjoyed the daily morning guided on site walks (3-4 hours) and opportunity to chill in the afternoon. Good food and service."
"Great value for money! Will visit there again soon for sure!"
"Lovely hotel complex high up in the Drakensberg region. Well appointed, quiet rooms with lovely views. The pool was very nice. Hotel staff was alert and very nice as was the bartenders and guides. The restaurant staff was a bit stressed out and needs some extra training. The dining experience was rushed and the food not exactly to our taste even though some servings were a delight."
"Everything about the Cavern was fantastic. My wife and I stayed at the palace last year and both agreed that we would choose The Cavern as a destination any day over the Palace if we had the choice. Great food, great service, great getaway and hospitality."
