This Elegant Homestead is a legal, registered 3 star establishment, situated on 2 acres of park like gardens approximately 35 km from Durban in the Hillcrest area, and has become sought after by tourists and Corporates who want good hospitality, cleanliness, comfort, value for money and peace & quiet. We offer two self-catering cottages, Tyne cottage and the Studio, and 3 B&B rooms, Room1, 2 and The Eleanore Suite. These 3 rooms do not have self-catering facilities.

Located in Bothas Hill in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa we are part of the Thousand Hills Experience Route T1 better known as The Comrades Route. And ideally situated for events such as Duzi and Comrades, family visits, weddings and horse shows. We are also very close to Hillcrest Private Hospital and about 15 km from Hammarsdale.
Bothas Hill is considerably cooler than Durban and it is advised some warm clothing always be brought, even in summer.

"If I had to criticize it would be having to manually have to open the gate and close it to the establishment I was nervous doing this late at night. Otherwise I would definitely stay there again"

  • "Wonderful stay at Lindisfarne"

    09 April 2018

"We only stayed for one night, so did not spend much time at Lindisfarne. The room was lovely though, and met all our requirements. The gardens and surroundings are beautiful. Our car battery died while we were out for the evening, and we were very kindly offered a jump-start so that we could get going on check -out day. Thank you for this!We will definitely be returning should I need to stay in the area again."

  • "Good for overnight stay only"

    17 July 2017

"Good for an overnight stay only. Safety is a problem, the gate doesn't lock and is only a meter high.
Hostess not very friendly, it felt as if she is doing us a favour.
The unit is not fully equipt for self-catering, we wanted to cook pasta but there were only 2 small pots.

Establishment's Response:

Hi Lisa thank you for all the thumbs up you gave our establishment and taking the time to write a review. I must say I was a little shocked at your comments and I would like to address them as follows.
The safety issue. I am not aware that you had an issue with safety in either of the units relating to your personal effects, vehicle, trailer or persons. This speaks for itself. We have a lot of hidden safety precautions covering the property (this is actually how I knew you had arrived as you did not even get to the front door before I came out) Personally, I would be more concerned with a property that is surrounded by barbed wire, electric fencing, visible cameras and huge gates which might indicate a high risk area. When you left in the morning you did not come and hand in your keys or say goodbye but just left leaving both units wide open with the keys inside. Not sure why you would do that if you were concerned about safety.
On arrival I came out and greeted you introducing myself. At the same time another one of my regular guests arrived who I politely asked if he could wait while I checked you in. You were standing next to him so you knew I had another guest waiting. I checked your German friends in first asking them about their trip to SA whether it was their first time and were they enjoying our beautiful country to which they replied yes. I showed them what they needed to know and then walked with you to the main house chatting about your trip where you had been and where you were going. I also explained the best place to park your trailer and vehicle. You complained you were tired and I said Im not surprised with the amount of travelling you had been doing. Once in the room you completed the register, I showed you what you needed to know about the room and you asked where you could get some supplies and I directed you to Checkers in Hillcrest. I am therefore confused you thought that I was not friendly and doing you a favour as I was polite and professional. I wished you a good stay and left to go and check in my other guest who was patiently waiting to be checked in.
The cottage is in fact well equipped and had you looked in all the kitchen cupboards you would have found the large cooking pot and frying pan in the cupboard above the bread bin. I have just checked in case it had been removed by another guest but it was definitely there. All you had to do was ask me and I would have either found it for you or supplied you with a pot to your liking.
Had you been booked in for breakfast I would have loved to have chatted to you and your travelling companions about your exploits but unfortunately I did not have that opportunity not even to say goodbye and thank you for staying.
Jane"

  • "Relaxing and quiet"

  • "Tyne Cottage has potential"

    02 February 2017

"We booked the Tyne Cottage to celebrate our anniversary but were a bit disappointed with the outdoor area which had very uncomfortable furniture and offered no privacy at all. The unit looks straight onto the main house and parking area. I also think that they should offer a better rate for just 2 people as it definitely is not worth it for a couple at R600 per person per night (if 4 people went it would only be R300 pppn which is reasonable). Otherwise the shower was great and the bedding very comfortable.

Establishment Response:

Hi Shiloh
Thank you for your review. Most complaints received by guests are as a result of their expectations not being met. This was clearly the case regarding your expectation and requirements for privacy and for that we apologise. We did send several photos of the property to you prior to your arrival. After checking the description on Safari Now we have requested they change their wording and use our wording which appears on all other websites as we are not exactly a honeymoon style establishment although all our honeymoon couples do like the idea that the cottages are separate from the main house. The outside furniture is adequate with a bench, a table with two benches and loungers on the main patio which could have been moved on request. We do not supply a huge amount of outdoor furniture due to the inclement weather in our area. With regard to the price here is my response to your initial enquiry which is self-explanatory. I was quite surprised you booked the two bedroom, 4 sleeper for only 2 people as it does work out quite expensive. Unit prices are common in our industry when booking a 6 or 4 sleeper. I trust we did meet the requirements that we advertise ie: quiet comfort, a courteous friendly welcome, good service and above all cleanliness.
Regards Jane"

  • "Will's visit"

    18 February 2013

"we stayed 2 nights in Tyne Cottage, good beds, bad kitchen needs refurbishment, they will start with this shortly, very friendly owner.

Establishment's response

I thank the Lathouwers for their constructive criticism as it is often difficult to monitor every aspect of the self-catering cottages unless people tell us what is faulty etc. The two blackened pots have been replaced. The linoleum floor in the kitchen has been lifted and is currently being replaced with tiles as part of our planned refurbishment for Tyne Cottage this year. I think the term “bad kitchen in need of refurbishment” is a little harsh as the walls, tiles, cupboards, counter tops, sink area etc are all in good condition. There was a little dust from the press board at the top of the cupboard under the sink which has been addressed. We have no doubt when you visit us again next time you will be very pleased with the result."
