  • "Beautiful setting, but no tranquility."

    25 March 2019

"The overview of this property definitely sells itself on tranquility and sophistication, and this indeed was the reason for us booking our two final nights in Johannesburg at this boutique hotel, with the intent of spending our final day relaxing poolside in the beautiful, peaceful garden.Sadly, without any prior warning, we walked outside after breakfast at 10am on Saturday 23 March to discover a children's party being set up on the patio and garden area, which we believed was for private use for hotel residents. With no manager on site, the breakfast chef could only advise that it is indeed a children's party hosted by an outside group. We were forced to change our plans and head out, to avoid being in their way and spend the day surrounded by a large group of children- not our cup of tea. Returning back to the hotel at 4pm, we assumed the party would be over and we could maybe grab a short time to enjoy the pool and garden before sundown. Unfortunately upon our return the party was still on-going, now also with a jumping castle and spit-braai set up in the garden, and the outside party-goers making full use of the patio, lawn furniture and pool loungers. The following Sunday morning the deflated jumping castle was still sprawled across the lawn. Ourselves and other hotel guests were confined to the small courtyard adjoining the rooms, sitting on cement benches to try enjoy some fresh air in a quiet environment.Since check-in on Friday 22 March, not once was a receptionist/manager seen on site again. We contacted her a few times telephonically, but sadly the response was merely "we host a lot of outside events and no one has ever complained." This is not good enough and absurd to believe this has not been raised as a problem before. She promised to be in at 7pm that night for us to talk to her, but alas, by the time we left for dinner at 7:40pm she had still not made an appearance. We got a message via the breakfast chef upon checkout that we do not need to pay for the few drinks we purchased from the bar fridge and honesty bar. If this was a gesture towards an apology we appreciate, but honestly in this situation, just not good enough. As a paying guest at what is marketed as a boutique hotel, I expect to have use of all the facilities I am paying for, and not have to share what is a small tranquil space with 30+ outsiders, or to be made to feel that outside events get preferential treatment over hotel guests. I would have loved to return again to this beautiful setting and tell other travelling friends and family about it too, but unfortunately with the strong chance of hotel guests being put out and coming second to outside events, I won't chance recommending it."

"We had a fantastic bed and delicious breakfast. The Wesley is situated in a quiet northern suburb. We were conveniently only minutes away, by car, for the outstanding Bryanston Organic Market on Saturday, and had no problem getting to and from the city in our vehicle. Thanks for the great accommodation!"
