Addo Gateway Lodge

The 3 star TGCSA rated Lodge is ideally situated close to all major game parks, in a small village, Cannonville, nestled along and the banks of the beautiful Sundays River. Surrounded by a beautiful and tranquil garden, just off the N2, 35 kilometres East of Port Elizabeth. The Lodge is only 5 kilometre from the new South Entrance of the Addo Elephant National Park (Camp Matyholweni) and is an ideal stop-over for anyone who would like to visit the this park and other Game Parks in the vicinity.

We offer B and B facilities as well as Self-catering in lodge. We have two double rooms and one family room which sleeps eight people. All rooms have their own en suite shower/toilet and bathroom facilities, own entrance, TV, fan, fridge, microwave, heater, coffee/tea facilities and indoor braai and in the thatched lapa/lounge/dining area. All this at affordable prices. Also available is The Sundays River Ferry which is designed to accommodate a maximum of 30 passengers to cruise on the beautiful Sundays River from Cannonville Slipway to the mouth and for up to 18 kilometre upstream. The ferry is fully licensed, insured and surveyed by the south African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and is skippered by a qualified Captain.

The craft boasts an upper deck with fresh water on tap with flushing toilet facility. There are sufficient seats for all passengers to be seated and it can accommodate access for wheel chairs. The ferrys owners are committed to conservation of the environment and the ecology of the river and therefore ensure that no waste materials are released into the river. The river offers wonderful scenery from the magnificent coastal sand dunes; prawn and pencil bait mud banks to the prolific bird life and indigenous fauna and flora along its banks. It also on occasion, boasts ancient shell middens of the Strandloper/Khoisan people from a few thousand years ago who used to live in this area and in the dunes. The ferry offers a number of cruise packages for local and overseas tourists as well as educational trips for scholars. We offer cruises from one hour up to 5 hours being: 1. short cruise up and down river for one hour; 2. 2 2half hours full cruise up and down river with a stop at the majestic dunes at the river mouth to explore or swim in the safe lagoon; and 3. Private bookings for parties, braais, conferences or team building. We are confident that this experience will be the highlight of all the outdoor activities in this area. "I loved the position near the river. I wasn't crazy about the breakfast. I would have liked DSTV ******************************************************* Dear Rodney and Sonja Thanks for the nice overall review and we do hope you will visit us again soon. I am sorry that you did not particularly like the breakfast, but as we have quoted Continental, (and we offered more !) (scrambled eggs, roasted croissants, etc) I really thought you would have enjoyed it. We do wish you would have mentioned this whilst at the table, and we would have satisfied you then. Please know if you visit your daughter again, to stay with us and we will make up for it by taking your order prior, to what you would love for breakfast, as we have always received high compliments for our service and breakfasts. "Maggie the hostess is an amazing person. So bubbly, full of energy, always attentive and a very nice lady to boot. I have nothing negative to say about our (too short) stay. Everything was tip-top, the accommodation is huge and will cater for a family very well, breakie was magic, an okay pub/grill place is just down the road. The setting is just a 1 minute walk to the river. Great place!"

"Our thanks to Maggie and Les for a wonderful stay at their lodge. The accommodation was spacious and well-equipped and Maggie and Les were very helpful. Maggie arranged for my son to go quad biking and Les took us on a lovely cruise on the Sundays River ferry. He was also very informative with his knowledge of bonsai. "Overall our stay was very good.The hospitality in particular was excellent and the owners are extremely friendly and kind.Breakfasts were excellent and the b&b is conveniently located to the entrance of the Addo Elephant National Park.Our room had twin beds rather than a large double bed which we would have preferred. We would highly recommend the establishment particularly if you are looking to stay for a night or two and you would like easy access to the Addo Park."

"One of the friendliest place to stay. The room is clean and tidy. The village also feel safe with a friendly bar and restaurant near by. Also really enjoy the boat trip and walk on the dunn. The house is fully equiped the only down side is the lack of privacy because we have to share the house with other people. Not recommended place for honeymooners but best for family. "

"5 star reception, a warm welcome by a very pretty small framed blonde lady; for every weary traveller fresh orange juice in champagne goblets, little hot facecloths for the face and hands, heated rooms, little flowers on neatly backfolded toilet paper and soaps, friendly furnishings and pictures taken of each group of guests pasted into the guest book! We were really surprised because we have been around a lot, also in other countries and nowhere except 5 star hotels like the Palace at Sun City did we receive so much special attention.Professional handling of finances and administration as well. Within the next couple of months the guest house will be able to take more people and the use of an indoor pool as well. It is near where the river runs into the sea, lovely and peacefull although between other houses. "
