Stuurmansfontein Corbelled House

Your gateway to the past!

If you're looking for a faraway South African spot with a real sense of frontier history, why not book in for a couple of nights' dreaming in a corbelled house.

This is a national monument, the corbelled houses are very unique in South Africa, and similar structures only exist in three districts in the Northern Cape, South Africa.

Travel on a dirt road away from any noise, traffic and get connected with nature. The corbelled house is off grid so no electricity, no mobile phone reception and no wifi. Be prepared to be surrounded by thousands of hectares in the Karoo region, just the open landscape around you with plenty of stars at night that you can gaze at.

Staying here feels like you're stepping back in time and reconnecting with your soul.

  • "An extraordinary stay and unforgetable experience"

    17 January 2020

"Having read about Stuurmansfontein Corbelled House in a magazine some 3/4 years ago, I always wanted to visit, as it looked like a very special place to stay at. This year presented the opportunity as I was driving through the Karoo. From the warm welcome from Piet and Charmaine to the moment I had to leave, it was the most extraordinary experience in that meticulously restored and furnished white house. With no electricity, only gas and candles, and no cellphone reception or wifi, and the expansive Karoo views, it provides a sense of peace, tranquillity and security like no other. And looking at the night sky in the Karoo, is always something very special. It was one of the best places I have ever stayed, and should be on everyone's list, who wants to have this kind of experience. This is truly a national treasure!"

  • "Wonderful hospitality in the Hantam Karoo"

    07 January 2020

"Stuurmansfontein is an absolute gem. Spotlessly clean with thoughtful touches from Charmaine - fresh herbs, rusks, mosbolletjies... The outdoor shower and swimming dam make a big difference in the sweltering heat. We'll be back to spend a few days here and really enjoy the stark environment and the resident Cinnamon-breasted Warblers."

  • "Romantic stay in the Karoo"

    02 September 2018

"A remote and private but very special place about 4 km away from the farmhouse. Ideal for a 2 Night stay (or longer if used as a base for exploring the Karoo) on self catering basis. Arrive early and consider driving time of nearly one hour from Carnavon. A historic building but with modern comforts."

  • "great hospitality and location"

    01 May 2018

"The house is beautifully restored and decorated. One has everything one needs. The location is amazing. The owners were very friendly and helpful and even organized meat for our braais. The lack of cell phone reception did not bother us at all and we were not far from the owners house but still very private."

  • "Comforts of old"

    04 January 2018

"What a special place! Its about as remote as one can imagine so the sense of peace and relaxation is profound. The house is quirky and old and we had to adapt especially in the kitchen to no electricity or plumbing and just an outside tap but very quickly it all seemed natural and charming (there is gas for cooking, fridge and hot water and plumbing in the bathroom). It is a very comfortable house with much care taken with the decor. Our only difficulty was no cupboards to unpack clothes into but for a short stay this was a small issue. Charmaine supplied a most delicious picnic basket of supplies for supper one evening. Piet and Charmaine were very charming hosts and very close should we need anything - their farmhouse is 5km away so all relative to this city dweller. We want to return for longer next time."

  • "A little piece of heaven on earth"

    04 January 2017

"Wow! That is the only word I can use to describe this beautiful house in the middle of nowhere. The stark beauty of the surrounding area and the fact that there is no cellphone reception or electricity just lends to the absolute charm of this old home.
We had a wonderful braai dinner organised by Charmaine - absolutely delicious - karoo lamb, boerewors, roast potatoes, salad, koeksisters and chocolate brownies and accompanied by a bottle of chilled white wine.
Once the sun set you light the candles and enjoy the peace and quiet and complete solitude. The outdoor shower is delicious as well.
Charmaine catered breakfast at the farmhouse as well and we loved every minute of our stay. What a very special place."

  • "Beautifully preserved, wonderfully isolated"

    08 January 2014

"We had a wonderfully relaxing time. The house is preserved really well and it felt like we were back in 1930s with no electrics or phone signal. Upside is we could see a million stars and get back in touch with nature. I would recommend a good car though as the place is down a farm road which needs some off-road steering. Although, to be fair we had 3 people in a VW polo and just made it as we had an experienced off-road driver. All in all, it was an awesome experience; makes you appreciate nature and a great place to clear the head. Already planning my next visit!"

  • "Best night of our tour"
