House 29 Doornkop Fish and Wildlife Reserve

House 29 is a fully self-catering house located in the Doornkop Fish and Wildlife Reserve. The property is very secure and relaxing with the majestic natural beauty of dams, rivers and mountains surrounding the reserve.

The house offers accommodation in four bedrooms with beds for eight people; it can sleep up to 12 people if you bring in the four extra mattresses. Comfortably furnished, the lounge also has a stone fireplace to warm the open-plan flow of the second level in winter. The kitchen, on the same level, is fully equipped with a fridge, an oven and all cooking utensils. This area opens onto a thatched balcony with patio furniture and a gas braai where evening meals or breakfast can be enjoyed along with the views. The patio below the balcony serves as a cool place to relax in summer. Next to the house there is a braai area in the lapa. There is a table but bring your own outdoor chairs. The house overlooks five interlocking dams only 70 m away.

At the clubhouse there is a games room and swimming pools with wooden loungers. Enjoy a drink as you lie on the loungers or as you sit under the cool thatch and enjoy the views. Near the clubhouse you will find the stables and the tennis courts.

This reserve is in the mountains between Carolina and Machadodorp and boasts hiking trails, horse riding, wildlife trails, 4x4 trails and historical ruins. There are also guided quad trails close by that can be booked at reception. Feel free to bring along your mountain bike, binoculars, cameras and fly fishing rods. There are 10 dams and two rivers with trout, bass, yellow fish and kurpers on the property and a wide range of birds and interesting wildlife including brown hyenas, side striped jackals, 'aardwolf' and porcupines can also be seen. Wildlife like zebra, warthog and ostrich are often seen wandering between the widely spaced houses, further adding to the beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.

"The reserve is stunning. The house and furniture unfortunately need some TLC. The stove is not working properly, no lights at the braai/boma area. Building material on the under roof patio . We will be back at Doornkop, just not house 29!!"

"Cozy house with a lovely view. Has all the necessities one needs to feel right at home. Kids never had a dull moment biking, fishing, swimming and horse riding. Would recommend this to anyone! Caution to families with young children and older people - the bedrooms lead up to the lounge with a steady set of stairs."

"We booked for four nights and only stayed for one night. It was a very bad experience. It does not even deserve1/5.The furniture are stained, the paint on some of the walls is peeled, there is an electric cable outside the bedroom. The under roof patio has bags of wood and cement covered under black plastic on it. It could not be used as a patio. There is no light outside at the braai area. The cupboard in the kitchen has old dirty cloths in. The double bed's linen is stained and torn. There was no warm water in the bathrooms.Would not recommend at all."

"We've been going to Doornkop since 2007, I was not impressed by the house at all. The hot water in two of the bathrooms didn't work. There's rubble outside on the bottom patio and on arrival the house was not fully clean and there were no towels until the next day."
