Clanwilliam Lodge

Located in the magical Oliphants River Valley, Clanwilliam Lodge is a colloquial gem emerging off the beaten track, oasis-like in its unforgiving semi-desert habitat. Only a two and 1/2 hours drive from Cape Town, the lodge offers 32 luxurious air-conditioned rooms, a poolside restaurant, Cocktail Bar and delicious cuisine.

All rooms are air-conditioned and some have en-suite bathroom with Shower, other a wall separating room and bathroom. Junior and Presidential Suites have the option of a balcony. All our Rooms have showers, excepting the Junior executive and Presidential have an open plan bath and shower separately.

Our conference facilities can cater for up to 30 delegates. Come and spoil yourself. Visitors should prepare to enjoy balmy summer days lounging on Bedouin daybeds at the pool and hot windless nights in pure understated luxury. This is where half measures are only available on request from the bar.

A hearty buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant every morning and is included in your stay. Choose from our light lunch menu and dinner is either la carte or an extensive buffet spread. Picnic hampers are available on request, or experience the nearby Lamberts Bay eatery called Muisbosskerm for a sublime seafood treat.

Founded in 1732, the picturesque Cape Dutch homestead of Clanwilliam is one of the 10 oldest towns in the country. Tucked away at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains and perched on one of the countrys favourite dams, its rich settler history offers a central location for a variety of attractions from flower viewing to Bushman art and a range of water sports. In keeping with the rich history of the area, Clanwilliam Lodge itself is a transformed girls hostel, originally built by the Provincial Administration in 1916. Much of the furnishings in the lodge are made from wood from the original building. Clanwilliam is also famous for growing and cultivating Rooibos Tea and for its original leather veldskoene factory. Clanwilliam is 212 km from Cape Town and a two and 1/2 hour drive by car.

    "Nothing about this place"

  • "We were promised a refund"

"WE are still waiting for communication and a refund from Clanwilliam Lodge. We arrived and left within half an hour. It is NOT what it is sold as being. Definitely not worth the prices charged for a 'Junior Suite'."

  • "Never again"

    11 September 2015

"We stayed here 5 and 6 September 2015. This was our first visit to Clanwilliam. The overall look of the lodge is ok, but definitely dated. There is a seating area just past reception that looks very beautiful. We stayed in the family room number 33. I got the feeling that this is the room they give to families with small children so other guest doesn't get disturbed. It is completely at the back of the lodge next to the staff quarters. Terrible, terrible, terrible!!! The room has 3 beds scattered around a very large room. Nothing even matches. Carpet is full of stains. The television is an old box television that doesn't even work properly. Towels are very old and they didn't even supply bathrobes. The room was clean but had a mould smell. Bathroom was very basic and looked dated. Again it was at least clean. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Especially the barman. Swimming Pool look very beautiful with day beds. Loved spending time here. Restaurant: Food is ok and prices are very cheap but very limited choice. They have coffee, juice, cold meat, cheese, cereal, bread, fruit and yogurt available buffet style in the morning followed by a served hot breakfast. Each time we arrived for breakfast the fruit, cold meat and juice was finished and they obviously don't refill. The served hot breakfast was nice. Liked the omelettes. Lucky for us we made a booking through SafariNow and whoever did the quotation, gave us a wrong rate at a much cheaper price. Thank heavens for that because this place is definitely not worth its asking price. I thought the discounted price that we accidently got is still too much for this place. Will definitely not be staying here again.<br></br>"

  • "Not recommended"

    31 August 2013

"We have been using SafariNow since 2008 to book our stay at various locations, that is from the West Coast, Namakwaland, South Coast, The Midlands, Namibia and now for the 1st time we have had a terrible stay at one of the lodges recommended by SafariNow, i.e., at the Clanwilliam Lodge. For the 1st time we have felt that the 4 rating on your website is not close to what this lodge is in real life, stained sheets, shabby furniture, .....From my side therefore not recommended at all!"

  • "Very good"

    28 January 2013

"My husband and I stayed at the Clanwilliam Lodge from 25 - 27 January 2013. Despite reading negative reviews on the internet, we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the lovely room and pool fully. The room and bathroom were furnished beautifully and extremely clean and modern. The pool area was lovely with plenty of relaxing beds with canopies. We have no complaints about the breakfast we ate there as we did not go looking for faults. The staff were friendly and helpful and we will definitely go back."

"There were more negatives than positives! They are trying hard to bring up the standard and one can see they are spending money on the place to get there. The room was fine except you need to black off the shower otherwise all in the bathroom gets soaked. The dining room staff were really very friendly and did all to make you welcome but the food choice needs an upgrade! The general areas in the hotel were dirty especially the corridors and carpets. You could say the rooms are luxury but for the price at the bottom end of luxury. It's a great setting and has potential but for now is not more than 3 star."
