Karoo Werf Gastehuis is situated in the historical town of Cradock, a serene but typical Karoo farming town lying on the banks of the Great Fish River. The guest house offers six fully equipped flats, four double bedrooms en-suit with kitchenette and a separate self-catering garden cottage.
The original part of town is graced with some of the finest buildings. The Dutch Reformed Church is a national monument, designed to look like Londons St Martins-in-the-field, and there is the Olive Shreiner House Museum which is devoted to the authoresss life and works.
The towns streets are lined with Ilex Oak Trees, particularly on Dundas Street, where they have been declared a national monument. The Old Water Mill is completely restored and worth a visit. The Great Fish River Museum, housed in the converted second Dutch Reformed Church, conveys what it was like to live as a settler after 1806 during the second British occupation of the Cape.
"I had a wonderful stay. I felt at home and the staff were very helpful. Dankie tannie Karien ek het heerlik gebly. Xx"
"WHEN ARRIVING THERE IS NO RECEPTION! YOU HAVE TO PHONE AS THERE IS NO SIGNAGE. FURTHERMORE ON WAKING UP THE NEXT MORNING, WE FOUND THAT THERE WAS NO KETTLE?"
"Lovely old Karoo house with nice interior decor. Very well equiped. Nobody hower was there on arrival but Carien sent Nicolene with the key and the wait was not long. She was very friendly and answered all our questions in a kind and friendly manner. Will return for sure."
"This is a quaint home, decorated with an eclectic range of collectibles and it is a perfect base for chilling and/or short day trips in the area, for example to Mountain Zebra National Park. There are no frills such as DSTV or wifi, but they were not needed. This is particularly ideal for two or three families travelling together, as we were, since you then have the house to yourselves. We loved it."
"The accommodation in pleasant and comfortable. It is a house that has been subdivided into various ensuite accommodations which are lovely.<div>There tends to be a bit of noise as the movement and chatter of other guests can disturb you. I was able to tune it out, though others in our group were bothered by it.</div><div>If you use this accommodation, note that the guest house and book in office are on separate premises. It caused quite a bit of confusion on our arrival at the guest house.</div>"
"we pent a wonderful night in this self catering home - we were welcomed on arrival and treated with great kindness . Loved the room and decor - splendid . Hope to return soon"
"Lovely old furniture in an old Karoo house, but the outside looked a bit too literally a 'werf'. We did not really get a warm welcoming though and last but not least the 'self catering cottage' that we had booked was not under equipped! Not really value for money."
