Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate

Dunkeld Country and Equestrian Estate is a luxury fly-fishing and equestrian estate situated in Dullstroom. The estate is located less than 3 hours from Johannesburg, so close enough for a weekend away, and far enough for a well-deserved escape. It is a haven for those looking to unwind, and an ideal destination for a family holiday, a romantic weekend away, a fishing trip, or corporate events and weddings.

Dunkeld offers a range of activities including horse riding, fly-fishing, mountain biking and hiking. Enjoy the panoramic views of the Dullstroom countryside, high standards of client service and South African hospitality. Accommodation is offered in country lodge suites, country self-catering accommodation, equestrian luxury lodge rooms, equestrian luxury lodge units, and equestrian self-catering accommodation.

The resort offers 19 different sized dams and ponds that are well stocked with trout from the on-site hatchery. The trail centre horses are well trained and trustworthy, giving even the most novice rider the confidence to enjoy a ride in the Dullstroom countryside. The equestrian centre is a popular destination for short weekend riding workshops for the experienced rider. Guests can hire bicycles, make use of the hiking and running trails, and enjoy a game of tennis. Other activities include trout hatchery tours, bird watching, swimming in either the indoor heated pool or outdoor pool, putt-putt, or treatments in the Dunkeld spa.

Sit back and relax in the Jazz Bar, or enjoy a delicious meal in the Sporting Horse Restaurant or the 1883 Restaurant. The village of Dullstroom is one of the coldest villages in South Africa, but with fireplaces in pubs, restaurants, and shops, it is the ideal place to enjoy a glass of red wine after a day of adventure, fishing or horse riding.

"Place needs more warmth in terms of decor as not the standard coziness of Dullstroom. Felt like a hotel feel.... front door should be frosted for privacy. A cutlery holder at sink for washing and drying up. Wifi available and if it is then details provided at unit and not at reception. Def need heating in the bedrooms. I could see the unit was relatively new so maybe you are still getting there but thought the price per day was high for what was on offer."

"We previously stayed at Dunkeld and had a very luxurious feeling. This time we were disappointed with the place we stayed. It was very old and felt dirty. Taking into account the price per night - not worth it."

"Enjoyed our stay. Thank you very much."

  • "The free roaming wild life and the large number of trout dams"

"Roads to location need to be upgraded, we live in the 21st century.Accommodative personell can be improved at reception area. They did not seem very helpful.Millennials want to be connected at all times no matter what, a good idea would be to install fiber at location for entire facility, for the evenings. Overall experience enjoyed the outdoors and would recommend this retreat to friends and family."

  • "Lovely setting, peace and quiet"

    23 April 2018

"It would be nice to have two extra chairs in the lounge. Four people can't sit on one sleeping couch. Although bedding was nice and clean, we found some of the kitchen utensils dirty. The shower door can open only half way - a big person will not be able to use the shower. We had a good time and enjoyed our sleepover."

"Hi there, I booked a 4 sleeper Country Apartment - standalone, self-catering unit for 2 adults and 1 child based on my newborn, possibility of helper / granny coming with to assist. When we arrived we were booked into the main house room 16 which was lovely and we had a pleasant stay, but only sleeping place for 2 (1 double bed), so only place for 2 people and not 4. Booking Confirmation. Enquiry #13058593. I would have liked to know this in advance and not at the point when I get into my room. Been here many times before so used to a certain standard. Also we belong to RCI / QVC and since end of 2017 been unable to book using our points on 3 occasions where there has been no capacity in the 20 of 25 holiday club units (5 units taken back by Dunkeld) forcing us to pay cash this time and then get something different to what we expected. Also think the 1883 restaurant offers some variety but quiet expensive and not good value for money personally."

"Would love to get a bigger room or cottage next time, if available."

"Very dissatisfied with my booking . I booked a self catering cottage through Safari sleeping 3 . A week before the date I was contacted by Dunkeld stating that Safari overbooked and would I give up my cottage for a twin Lodge room with a sleeper couch . I was accommodating and agreed . Arriving at Dunkeld I got the idea they hastily vacated room 3 for us . Against the King headboard was a double bed . I complained at reception and Brenda helped to arrange a decent bed for us . I am sure that we paid more for our cottage than the price of Room 3 Lodge Room . Please investigate ."

  • "Disappointing and Misleading - Beware"

    01 September 2014

"My husband and I had chosen the Bergview self catering cottage for our first anniversary based on the pictures on the Safari now mobile website. The cottage we were given the keys to was very different to that in the pictures, however. The bathroom only had a small, dirty bath. The cottage bedroom looked nothing like those in the pictures with a dingy double bed squashed in behind some cupboards. Some of the windows didn't close properly either - a problem in freezing weather. When we tried to explain to the manager why we were so disappointed with the room (expecting much better from the pictures we had seen and the dirty bath) her initial reaction was that if we wanted to leave we could go ahead. This was after we had paid for the weekend and driven all the way there. We were then reluctantly offered one of the hotel rooms with a twin bed. Although the estate is beautiful, it is the first time I have gone away and been relieved to check out and go home. There are much better places to stay in Dullstroom."
