Schaefers' Halt

Take a step back into a bygone era and stay at Schaefers' Halt's historic cottages, self-catering accommodation for stressed city dwellers looking for an authentic country experience. The property is located in the Dullstroom countryside and is a nature-lover's retreat. Accommodation consists of four cottages, and Schaefer's Halt also offers a country wedding and function venue.

The nearby, quaint town of Dullstroom gives a glimpse into village life, with its high street shopping and many restaurants and pubs. Treat yourself to a horse riding trip and then a session at the beauty therapy salon. Schaefers' Halt is close enough to take a day trip to the many tourist attractions in the area, and is an ideal stopover to the Kruger National Park and private game lodges in Mpumalanga. The Dullstroom area saw much action in the Anglo-Boer War and the Highland Battlefields can best be appreciated on a tour.

Art courses are held on the scenic property and the more adventurous can try fly-fishing in the four well-stocked small ponds, as well as river fishing. Birdwatching, walking, hiking and mountain biking can all be enjoyed on the farm, which boasts stunning views, waterfalls, birds and wild flowers.

  • "Lovely cottage"

    27 October 2019

"We stayed in a cottage named The Cosy. It is a spacious 2 bedroomed unit with ensuite bathrooms overlooking a beautiful garden and pond. The owners really pay alot of attention to detail with matches next to every candle, fresh flowers from the garden all through the cottage. The fireplace was a big bonus during the chilly evenings. Will definately stay there again and recommend Schaefer's Halt as an establishment."

"The comfort and cosiness! The tranquility and atmosphere. Sooo relaxing. So convenient!"

  • "Beautiful views in a peaceful atmosphere"

    26 November 2018

"We really enjoyed our time at Schaefer's Hallt, in Windsong. We were using it as accommodation for a friend's wedding nearby. Between the frenzy and noise of the prewedding party and the wedding, Windsong was a calm haven with absolutely stunning views. Drinking coffee on the patio overlooking the valley was a treat. There are a few minor improvements that would push this review to full 5 stars across the board. Some of the couches in the living area were not the most comfortable to sit on, the tv is a bit dated and small, and the water pressure was lacking slightly. That being said, we were hardly using the couches or the tv, with gorgeous hikes right outside the door."

  • "Relaxing retreat!"

    03 September 2018

"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Schaefers Halt. The cottage was well-equipped and private. We had a very warm welcome from Sharon & Trevor. Our dogs had a marvellous time too! We will definitely be back!"

  • "A wonderful weekend away"

    22 July 2018

"Thank you for an absolute treat of a stay! We really appreciated the warm welcome from Sharon and the little surprise birthday treats on the pillow. Only thing that could have made it better is the addition of a shower to the bathroom - especially after a cycle."

  • "Time out near Dullstroom"

    09 July 2018

"We loved the actual venue, just a heads up if you are not going to be doing you own dinners then it is a fair drive in the evening back after dinner BUT loved being out town and just in the country side which was so beautiful. The place was clean and comfortable and Trevor made sure we had whatever we needed. Highly recommended."

  • "Fresh air and lovely view"

    02 May 2018

"We had a lovely stay! I was looking for a place that would give us comfort, blue skies and fresh air and that's exactly what we got. We stayed in the cloud cottage up on the hillside and it was wonderfully private with a lovely view over the valley below. As has been mentioned in other reviews, there was some road noise from the traffic, but it didn't bother us and lessened substantially after the weekend. The cottage was equipped with everything that was needed and was very comfortable. We went for walks and spent time sitting on the verandah looking out at the peaceful view."

  • "Pure bliss!"

    27 December 2017

"I was looking for a place to rest, read, and get some peace and quiet and Schaefer's Halt was absolutely perfect. I stayed at the Snug which was very nice and cosy, nice view over the garden and the dam. Kitchen was fully equipped with anything one might need (much better than most other self-catering places I've been to) and the owners were lovely. Definitely recommend the place and hope to come back someday!"

  • "Fair stay"

    22 June 2015

"We stayed in the Snug, a cosy little retreat. Pretty views and comfortable for a romantic weekend getaway. Very peaceful. Cleanliness in the kitchen was a concern. The cottage seems to have a cockroach problem and may need fumigation."

  • "a little bit of heaven"

    11 April 2015

"My family just spent a stunning week at Scaefers Halt. The accommodation is wonderful with everything you need. The surroundings are truly stunning and it really was a one of the best holidays we have been on. The owners are warm and truly do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. My children had so much to do and were thrilled to catch their very own trout. We were sad to leave but have already chosen dates for our return. Shaefers Halt is a little bit of heaven and we go home feeling relaxed and refreshed."

  • "Unpleasant"

    08 April 2015

"Will never stay at Schaeffers'Halt again. Owners wife unreasonable . Definitely not pet friendly. Cottages close to very busy road with traffic all through the day and night. Dustbins were not cleaned over 4 days."

  • "Perfect"

    15 September 2014

"We were made to feel at home immediately. The cosy, where we stayed for a weekend to attend the wedding of friends nearby, was delightful and met all of our needs. Hotwater bottles on the beds, and a very cosy fireplace in the living room. Our hosts were so friendly and flexible, letting us check out later in the afternoon. I would recommend staying here, I only wish I had been able to stay longer and do some fly-fishing!"

    11 January 2013

"What a peaceful way to end off our year. Schaefers' Halt is nestled in the most beautiful setting, far enough from the craziness of town but close enough to pop in when you need to. Our cottage was gorgeously cosy, equipped with absolutely everything - from potjie pots to cheese graters. We highly recommend you pay them a visit... cast a line in one of the well-stocked dams, put your feet up and enjoy the sound of the frogs as the sun drops behind the mountains."
