Battlefields Country Lodge

Battlefields Country Lodge is situated in Dundee and lies in the heartbeat of the battlefields in KwaZulu Natal. Explore Boer, Brit and Zulu battle sites at Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift, Blood River, Ncome & Talana museums.

The lodge is nestled in green valleys overlooking rolling hills, dams and the famous Talana hill which is the site of the first battle between the Boers and the British soldiers! Battlefields Country Lodge boasts with 50 accommodation units ranging from unique, Silo-styled units to luxury, self-catering suites set in beautiful lush gardens with swimming pool and overlooking dams, mountains, horses, game and stunning bird life. The lodge was established in 1998 by the Roos family, who still run the lodge, The old original cottage, which was used as a farm workshop, was renovated into 6 en-suite rooms and named Rosies Cottage after Rosie Rogers who lived in it for many years! Thereafter, two old grain silos next to the old milking shed were built up and made into 4 en-suite rooms with a stairway joining the top two rooms. Unfortunately, the walls of the milking shed were crumbling and the idea of turning it into a chapel and dormitory for school groups was dashed, so the iron roof was removed and used to build a gazebo which has since been used as a chapel for wedding ceremonies. The silos became sought after and 10 silos were built and made bigger than the original. These have been a wonderful experience for our tourists & a landmark for our lodge. The silos are extremely popular with our international guests. Share and enjoy a quiet, relaxed sundowner in our fully licensed Lapa Ukhamba watering hole, a round bar built under thatch. A cosy fire in winter creates a wonderful, warm experience.

An excellent 3-course Country-style buffet is served in the 70-seater Warriors Arms dining room. Experience a South African Braaivleis, Potjie, etc.

  • "The garden and setting was amazing. Great views and animal sightings!"

    09 November 2020

"The service was great, enjoyed breakfast. Beautiful surroundings and gardens. Great sighting of buck and ostrich. It was quiet and all the COVID protocols were maintained. The room was clean and well kept, I think there is room for improvement with the bathroom though. But a beautiful, quiet retreat."

"Arrived just in time for dinner which was great value. Rooms are quirky but nice, Silo 27. Ostriches and Springboks come running when a man blows a whistle. Lovely"

  • "Stay at Battlefield"

    09 July 2016

"Our stay was not enjoyable, the place was freezing cold there were no remotes for the heaters or tv and no extra blankets either it was 1 long and very cold night."

  • "Battlefields"

    11 April 2016

"The Lodge is conveniently situated for visiting a number of battlefield sites, and has game in the surrounding fields. The rooms are pleasant and com fortable, though the budget ones have no fridge ( we were given a free upgrade to a standard room, which have). However, the impression is given that it is necessary to have the full three course evening meal, ordered in advance, but I discovered later that you can have just the less expensive main course, and there is a facility to purchase and braai meat, less expensive still Robin"

  • "A bit of a curate's egg"

    03 April 2016

"The accommodation was neat, very comfortable and reasonably-priced. The staff were professional and friendly. The grounds were beautifully kept. And yet, there is something about the place... I wouldn't recommend it.<div><br /></div><div>It is perhaps the fault of the sign outside Reception: "Given the rising cost of ammunition, I don't fire warning shots". It is jokey, but not. It is a threat. Not welcoming. Add that to the intense level of security getting in and out of the resort (your vehicle licence disk is electronically scanned each way) - similar to a military compound... one feels as though there is serious dis-ease in the area and wonders why. "Not a nice vibe" was my daughter's comment.</div>"

  • "Best yet"

"The accommodation and surrounds are neat and kept in very good condition. There is a restaurant on site which serves good food. The staff are very efficient and helpful with everything. We have no complaints for the Battlefields Country Lodge only compliments. We would refer anyone we know going to this part of the country to the Battlefields Country Lodge."

"Friendly and efficient staff made us very welcome and, even in the Budget Accommodation, everything we needed was catered for. Our car was even washed! The meals at the restaurant were simple but very tasty.<br />"

  • "Will visit again"

    25 September 2013

"Our rooms in the bungalows were very clean and comfortable. The staff were all pleasant and helpful and accomodating. Battlefields country lodge is ideally situated for touring the battlefields and is far enough away from the Dundee that you feel like you are away from the city, yet not too far if you want to nip to the shop, though their bar and restaurant would keep you well supplied."
