Walkabout Estate Guest Farm

Walkabout Estate offers you a relaxing and private farm stay in a scenic and mountainous area. We farm has cows, chickens, springbuck and sheep. Guests are free to roam around and enjoy farm-life. Walkabout Estate can be recommended as a good base from which you can explore the Eastern Free State as well as Lesotho. The Maluti mountains and Katse Dam are easily accessible from Ficksburg. Walkabout Estate is a tranquil place ideal for a relaxing getaway in a rural environment far away from the hustle and bustle. Bring your fishing rod and catch some carp (catch and release)

Sandstone, thatched cottage: Luxurious and fully-equipped for self-catering, sleeping 6. One king size bed in the bedroom, two single beds and a double bed in the loft (for children). Full bathroom, shaded parking, indoor fireplace. The kitchen is fully-equipped with fridge/freezer, 4 plate stove/oven, microwave etc. There is a sunny wooden deck with breathtaking views and a spacious thatched braai lapa. Very private setting. North facing and sunny during winter.

The Farmhouse Unit: This unit is attached to the farmhouse. Private entrance. Kitchenette fully equipped for self catering. Sleeping 4 (One double and one bunk bed for kids). Private bathroom en-suite with toilet, basin and bath. Outdoor braai-facilities on terrace in park-like garden. Free coffee and tea. Dinner and breakfast only available by arrangement. All bedding and towels supplied. Extra blankets and electric blankets will be provided in winter. Guests can make their own arrangement with us for cleaning and household chores.

The last 3 - 4km before you arrive at the farm is a ground road and can be slippery during a rain storm.

"It was special - everything you need in the flat, plus a lot of extras not expected in a self catering flat. We had a wonderfull time chatting with the owners, they felt like family when we left. Caring and loving people. A lot of highlights that you will not always get - the dog had babies, die kinders het appelkose gepluk en vir ons gegee. Although it is a working farm, the atmosphere were peacefull and quiet. I do not have words to describe our wonderfull stay at this farm."

"Trevor and Grants hospitality was the best I have ever experienced. There was so much on over. This place doesn't just give you the basics but everything you can dream of and more. They are amazing with the kids and there is all kinds of animals to amuse them. We had a little rowing boat and spend a fair amount of time on the water. We will deffinitly be back."

"We LOVED this place. It's on a gorgeous, safe sheep farm and the lodge was perfect! Sleeps 6 easily but we had 4 adults and 3 kids with no problems. Deck overlooks the small dam and there is a little boat to go out in which the kids loved. We fished and had a blast! Every afternoon we helped (or hindered!) the farmer in bringing the mother sheep and baby lambs in for safe keeping, and we fed and bathed the orphan lambs that they look after. Played in the bird cages with lots of beautiful types of birds, went rock/mountain climbing, and enjoyed farm life. It was out of the way and there are no coffee shops down the road but we went for a day trip into clarens - about 45mins and Ficksburg was close enough to duck in for supplies. I would absolutely stay here again. Thanks to Anna for assisting the kids with the lambs and to Grant for opening his farm to us to wxperience."

"Thank you Grant & Charmain for your excellent service and care when we stayed in your thatched cottage for a few days. It was clean, neat, peaceful and well equipped. We lacked nothing. It was a pleasure to wake up to a working farm, hearing the sheep, cows and chickens. And in all that the cottage was far enough not to be disturbed. We looked over our own dam - tranquility! The cottage faces North and is very well insulated. We were there in the middle of winter, with a big log fire burning every night, sipping our red wine.......... we will be back!<br />"

"My husband, my little boy of nearly three and I have recently enjoyed a most fabulous time at the Walkabout Estate Guest Farm. It is located in a beautiful part of the Free State and the farm is easy to access, but you still feel that you are miles away from anyone...food for the soul. We stayed in the smaller cottage linked to the house but it was spacious, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. There are loads of interesting things to do on the farm and our little boy had a ball catching crabs, looking at all the animals, watching the tractors and playing with Grant and Charmaine's two girls. The family made us feel totally welcome and part of their family, but at the same time respected that we also wanted to spend time alone. We found the rates exceptional value-for-money and wanted to stay another two nights, but unfortunately other people were booked to arrive. Overall, a wonderful holiday and we will certainly be visiting the farm again."
