Glen Reenen Rest Camp Golden Gate Highlands SANParks

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the north eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Mild highveld summers with the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon and cold winters with occasional snow transforming the park into a white wonderland.

The Glen Reenen Rest Camp is situated close to the Golden Gate Hotel & Chalets and offers rondavels, longdavels and guest cottages. For nature lovers who prefer to get a bit closer to the natural environment, caravan and camping sites are also on the list.

Activities available at Golden Gate Highlands National Park include abseiling, canoeing, game drives, hiking and nature walks, horse riding, and swimming.

Other useful information at this rest camp:

- Pets are not allowed.

- As outdoor lighting in camps is limited, a torch/headlamp is required when walking outside at night.

- Vehicle repair, medical, post office and police services at Clarens (17 km) or Bethlehem ( 60 km).

- Remember to bring a hat, walking shoes, sun block, camera, binoculars and wildlife reference books.

- Hikers on day and overnight trails must always carry sufficient water.

- Take cool and light clothing for summer and warm clothing for winter.

- Area prone to sudden weather changes.

PLEASE NOTE: the rates are subject to the number of adults and children staying. Quotes will include the 1% Community Levy, but will exclude daily conservation fees, which are to be paid directly to camp on arrival.

PLEASE NOTE: there is currently construction work taking place adjacent to the Glen Reenen campsite. Estimated completion of the renovation is September 2020. SANParks apologises for any inconvenience and disturbances caused during the construction process.

"The accommodation was clean and in a reasonably good state. The staff were polite, friendly and attended to our requirements. One down side is that there were a large group of campers who were rather noisy and played loud music which the staff ignored and this spoiled the atmosphere of being in a nature reserve. Definitely something to be brought to the attention of the staff."

"Not a bad place to stay but way too expensive for what you get!!! Not a shampoo, not even a small pile of wood. No frying pan to fry eggs in. Won't be staying there again. In Clarens B and b its R650 a night incl Breakfast."

"The camping facilities are in good order. Electricity close to the camping sites. Bathrooms are always clean and in working order. You wake up with the most beautiful view every morning and you are close enough to Clarens to experience the town every day."

"I phoned sanparks earlier in the week to confirm our booking, and they struggled to pick up our reservation. We were not informed that the reception closes at 6pm. We booked a stand with power, but not informed that you require a 'caravan' adapter. We found out the next am that these could be hired for R200 from reception. Excellent little shop on site that stocks everything. Sanparks staff extremely efficient and friendly. No hot water in the ladies bathrooms for entire 3 days. Bathrooms and kitchen clean and spacious and staff extremely courteous."

"Golden Gate is beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed the surroundings. The cottage was a disappointment though. Expensive and a terrible kitchen which according to the maintenance manager would be replaced soon since it was becoming dangerous. The shower door fell out in one bathroom. Our overseas visitors were disappointed that they were being charged more for conservation fees then us locals.,which seems like exploitation."

"I would recommend Glen Reenen to anybody wanting a get away. It was peaceful and the walks are fantastic. My only negative is the rondavels and longdavels only have a small heater which is far to small to make any difference in the room temperature, otherwise a lovely place to stay."
