Kingfisher Lodge

Kingfisher Lodge is situated on the banks of the Sunday's River in a peaceful and quiet area of Graaff-Reinet. The town was established in 1786 and is the fourth-oldest town in South Africa. The surrounding farmland epitomizes the Karoo. The town has retained much of its architectural heritage and it is no wonder that it is known as the 'Gem of the Karoo'.

Set in a beautifully maintained garden, against the backdrop of a variety of old trees which attract a variety of birds, there are seven luxury guest suites. Each suite is tastefully decorated in a distinctive style with antiques, brass beds and woollen and mohair carpets. All rooms are en-suite and some have both a shower and a bath. All rooms have private entrances and secure parking. The rooms are equipped with ceiling fans, desk fans, electric blankets and oil heaters to ensure the comfort of guests in all weather conditions. Tea and coffee facilities and TVs are provided in each suite.

Dcor in the main house features more antiques, woollen and Persian carpets and original paintings. Original doors, hand carved by Zanzibar slaves for Cecil John Rhodes' Estate, Groote Schuur, can be admired in the main house. The stained glass door of the dining room provides a gracious link between the main dining room and the drawing room with its yellowwood ceiling. The opulently appointed lounge is one of five living areas which include the sun porch, drawing room, enclosed patio and the lapa area near the swimming pool.

Many national monuments and historical buildings can be found in and around Graaff-Reinet. These include the Dutch Reformed Church, Old Library, Hester Rupert Art Gallery, Reinet House, John Rupert Little Theatre, Old Residency, Urquart House, Graaff-Reinet Pharmacy, Powder Magazine, Drostdy and Stretch's Court, Cacti and Succulent Collection, Kalkkop Impact Crater, First Midland Hospital, St James Church, Union Monument, Town Hall and War Memorial, Cradock Street and the private dwellings.

"Our hostess and owner stared at her notes for 20 minutes, then at my confirmed, paid booking with Safarinow. Confused she declared that she didn't know about our booking and that we have to look for alternative accommodation. We tried to phone Safarinow, but there was no telephonic assistance available. Then after I asked for my money back she miraculously found a empty room, moved her other guests from our room and after 45 min the booking in experience was completed! That was the beginning of a disappointing experience. At R1600 a night I expected something special. We had to find the room ourselves, we got cheap coffee with no milk in the room, the place was not dusted in months, I had to assemble the broken portable air conditioner myself, the swimming pool was dirty and unusable and the garden neglected. On a positive note, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast was satisfactory, but still not worth R1600! I still want my money back Carina. Establishments response: Hi Mr. Bothma My sincerest apologies for Saturday evening. I admit that the booking made by you through safari Now was totally my fault. I did have a double booking for Saturday night. Two people booking the honey moon suit simultaneously. I wrote Mairanna in first and she appeared on my manual books and not you. I did however ask a friend down the road to have Marianna and she was happy with that. But I unfortunately did not change that in my books. I apologise for that and feel very bad about that. Because that is where everything went sour. On the other matters complained about. I have two gardeners in the garden Monday to Friday. If the wind blew there are always leaves around., making it look untidy We have a drought on our hand in Graaff-Reinet but we are doing our best in the garden. The room was used a few days in a row, and I will take it up with my staff, but It seriously was not dusted months ago, but every day. Swimming pool, no one else complained. Water might have been a bit murky, due to having had overcast weather, but definitely clean. I am happy to give you back half your money. Again I am sorry that you were not happy with Kingfisher. "Gerda and her partner were very friendly and helpful but based on the dark poky room we stayed in the accommodation is very poor value for money. For the R1000 rate we expected a better experience. The pillows and duvets were cheap polyester and old thin towels were provided. The cord for the kettle was too short and we struggled to plug it into the socket."

"We had a great time there. Staff were exceptional and really helped us to get the most of the one day in Graaf Reinet we had. Accommodation was better than we expected and I can recommend Kingfisher to anyone who needs a mid-Cape stop over. Breakfast was really great as well."
