  • "Damp, dark and dirty"

"Linga Longa has seen much better days. Although the bedrooms are reasonably comfortable, and you can walk to town in about 10-15 minutes, the dampness and dirtiness of the house completely undermined any charm it could have. The poor condition of the place was underlined as soon as we arrived. We waited about 10 mins for security to arrive to let us in, only to find when he arrived that the gate motor wasn't working and all that was required to open the gate was to push it hard. Therefore, there is no actual security provided by the front gate. The friendly security man then opened the house to us but was clearly in a rush to leave, without showing us anything beyond how to operate the alarm. This, we later learned, was likely because of the terrible condition of so much of the house, and in particular, the pile of rubbish dumped under the house (which is raised by wood logs, hence you can see underneath). We have pictures of all of this.Inside, the kitchen was completely damp, with a leak emanating most likely from the dishwasher. It stank the whole place out and it felt dirty and unhealthy just to be inside. We also found screws sticking dangerously out of cupboards and a number of things that were broken, including the dishwasher, the chopping board and the security gate by the kitchen door (which wouldn't shut or lock). Inside various cupboards, were mounds of rubbish and/or poorly organised household things that also smelt like they'd been there for years. The wooden veranda could be nice if it was clean and the garden had been trimmed so that you could actually see the view! But there was bird poo on the table and chairs and no view due to the overgrown garden. On the other side, there were two braai's provided, both of which are broken. The weber style braai was just left upside down because it's legs were broken and the half-barrel braai had rusted holes in it. Thankfully, we went on some nice hikes around Graskop that meant we didn't have to stay inside the house! But the worst was to come when we left. The landing page for Linga Longa on Safari Now's website states: "Breakfast can be enjoyed at the delightful Silverspoon Restaurant. The breakfast voucher is also redeemable for a light lunch at Silverspoon." This we took to mean that we can go for a breakfast at Silverspoon which is covered by a voucher provided by Linga Longa to the restaurant. When we arrived at Silverspoon, this appeared to be the case, and the friendly staff assisted us. However, the manager decided to call the owners of Linga Longa to make sure because no-one had come to take advantage of this offer in a while. The Linga Longa owners refused point blank to honour the voucher and said they no longer do this and meant to remove any mention of the voucher from the safarinow site. This terrible service, lying on their advertisement for the accommodation, and the filthy and unmaintained house combined to leave us certain that Linga Longa was one of the worst establishments that we have ever had the unfortunate experience of staying in."
