3 Darling Street Guest House

Three Darling Street Guest House is a typical Karoo Victorian House. Declared a National Monument in the mid-nineties. All our rooms are en-suite and are decorated in traditional style. Antique furniture and works of art including period tapestries.

Log fires in winter make a stay over in Hanover comfortable and relaxing. We grow our own fruit and veggies and are known for the quality of our meals and service.

Our garden is well established....the house was built in 1848. Ample shade from ancient trees make the garden a delight in summer. Opposite our main house we have a Victorian cottage...all rooms en-suite and our restaurant ..also opposite the main house has a country house feel and superb food.

We are blessed with wonderful staff who take an interest in our guests needs and our cooks Maricelle and Ruanda take great care to see that every meal is a delight.

The town of Hanover was featured in Country Life June 2000 and 3 Darling Street received high praise. We have also been featured in Getaway Magazine... Top of The Times Home Owner South Africa and many other publications.

  • "A Victorian gem in the Karoo"

    04 September 2007

"Staying at 3 Darling Street, Hanover is a rare experience: Genuine Karoo hospitality; a chance for a perfect night's sleep in a real Karoo cottage with modern cons; delicious home-cooked meals including famous Karoo lamb; absolute peace and quiet, clear starry nights and the quaint fascination of watching life in a very old and almost unspoilt country town. Each item in every room at 3 Darling Street has been acquired and positioned with infinite consideration to create an authentic Victorian atmosphere, enhanced by Dave and Heather's charming attention to their guests needs and moods. Their staff deserve top marks too for being obliging and really good at their jobs. Unlike most Victorian homes of the past, the housekeeping in this modern-day version is beyond reproach. To stay anywhere else in Hanover would be a great mistake - you will miss out on a real treat!. "

  • "Coldest Autumn Night in Hanover"

    01 May 2006

"This was the perfect half way stop over between JHB an CT if a bit cold. It was very welcoming and I will book again."

  • "Sue Carmichael"

    09 January 2006

"Lawrence and his staff are charming. Attention to detail lacking e.g. no glasses for water in our room. Towels rather tatty etc. The concept is great but perhaps it is now time for a new injection of enthusiasm / sprucing up, which I gather is about to happen. "

  • "Charming & Surreal"

    05 January 2006

"My wife and I spent one night at 3 Darling Street while driving from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Hanover is such a small town and you feel as if you are travelling into another world as you drive down the small gravel streets, some of which innocently meander into the karoo’s semi desert. 3 Darling street made the experience even more surreal with its old Victorian style and warm intimate hospitality from its owner – Numerous paintings, maps, books and other artefacts immerse you further into a bygone era. Dining was pleasant with a buffet that included roast karoo lamb and I noticed that pizza was also on offer. The rooms were as you would expect in a Victorian style monument – charming but not too rudimentary. Breakfast was simple but good. The service was a little tentative at times but the overall experience was memorable – it’s the kind of place where you expect to meet intriguing strangers from faraway places and you may be tempted to lengthen your stay."
