Bartons Folly Trout and Nature Retreat is situated between two mountains in the beautiful Hekpoort area near Magaliesberg, offering the ideal self-catering venue and fishing escape. The Trout Dam is surrounded by high cliffs and fed by a perennial mountain stream. The dams are well-stocked and the method of angling is catch and release. If an eagle were to fly over the Witwatersberg, with the mighty Magaliesberg to the west, it would see an old English blockhouse defending the break in the mountains which de la Rey and his men named Hekpoort.
Barton's Folly Manor House is a magnificently appointed house surrounded by huge thatch and verandas overlooking the Hekpoort Spruit. The house accommodates up to eight guests and is entirely self-catering, with indoor and outdoor barbecue areas. It is ideal for a family getaway, private party or fishing group. In addition, there is also Rose Cottage, a beautifully appointed self-catering cottage with every convenience and ideal for two for a romantic getaway. Guests are welcome to use the swimming pool at Bartons.
The Manor House can be booked as a venue and closed to the public or for one or two families at a most reasonable cost. At Barton's, enjoy walks through the forest, along the river or to the historic English Blockhouse which is a National Monument. Accompanied walks and a short lecture can be arranged at no extra cost. We also have a huge enclosed play area in this child-friendly paradise.
In the vicinity, places of interest include Sterkfontein Caves, Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind, 4x4 courses, Plumari Game Farm, Magaliesberg and Bill Harrops Balloon Safaris. There are also plenty of hiking trails and horse riding trails nearby. Numerous restaurants are situated nearby and Hartebeespoort Dam is approximately 20 minutes away. Your hosts will advise and assist you in respect of any needs or requests you may have.
"We were blown away by this gem by the river. Beautifully furnished, fully equipped, a river at our feet and a paradisiac hideaway picnic spot. We can't wait for the next opportunity to visit!Note that sleeper couch may not suit for adults."
"The picture don't do the view justice. Nice and big inside, the kitchen is lovely. The host is friendly and communicates very well before arriving. The sleeper couches do not work for adults. They are to wonky and mattress very thin. Also the floors are strangely very slippery."
"What a gem just outside the city!. Loved the space, stunning rooms and beautiful view and was blessed with some buck on our evening drive. It felt like a week away!"
"Very neat and tidy. Superb surroudings."
"Great weekend great fishing and excellent accommodation"
"What a disappointing experience. The house did not offer the required rooms, was dirty and definitely not worth the asking rate."
"Lovely stay for the whole family. We would like to come back."
"What a lovely time we had at Bartons. The pictures don't do the place any justice. Joy and Albert were awesome, they even let us check-out later as we the kids were still enjoying themselves. I will definitely be going back."
