Fish Eagle River Lodge was named after the two breeding pairs of African fish eagles nesting on the banks of the Berg River which forms one of the boundaries of this working olive and vine farm.
The upmarket accommodation is set in beautifully landscape gardens with the imposing Elandskloof mountain range as a backdrop to the tranquil setting. Only 45 minutes from Cape Town, the farm is situated in the heart of the Riebeek Valley, just outside the quaint village of Hermon and about five minutes from the restaurants and shops of Riebeek Kasteel.
The historic towns of Tulbagh and Wellington are both about 20 km away and the scenic winelands of Paarl, Franschhoek, and Stellenbosch are also easily accessible.
"the warm hospitality and the stunning views"
"The Mapstones were extremely welcoming and friendly. We were warmly welcomed. The lodge is perfect as a basic accommodation stopover and the rooms have lovely balconies that look out over the fields and mountains in the distance. There is one major negative. Their is zero sound insulation between the rooms. We could hear every word the couple next door were saying. This is not an exaggeration and they were talking in normal voices - no yelling. I guess it would have been the same for them about us. Until that is fixed I would not return."
"Very friendly hosts. Comfortable stay with everything we need. Great farm breakfast on patio with a wonderfull view. Can recommend Fish Eagle River Lodge"
"Ideal place to relax, with birds chirping in front of window, lovely views and friendly hosts."
"We really enjoyed our stay at Fish Eagle Lodge, the hosts Kay and Steve were fantastic and very welcoming. The farm is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. There are braai facilities for those choosing the B&B option with crockery, wood and blitz available at R15 p.p (super convenient!).Each morning a full English breakfast is served outside. We loved the fact that it was so central and only a 10 minute drive to the town of Riebeek Kasteel. A great place to stay for the Olive festival weekend! Highly recommended!"
"Thank you to Kay and Steve for a lovely evening at Fish Eagle River Lodge. We were a party of 12 guests who stayed there and Kay and Steve went out of their way to accommodate us."
"This was probably the worst place I have ever stayed in. It was definitely not a 4star grading. The owners was unfriendly and the Lodge was not in a good state.

Establishment Response:

I truly am at a loss for words with Mr. Abrahams review, so I will treat it with the contempt it truly deserves. I would simply ask any prospective client to check many other reviews on various other platforms where I am sure you will get a more balanced view of our Establishment, and indeed of kay and I as owners. Thanks for your time in reading this reply, I can only hope that the unsubstantiated, vindictive views of Mr. Abrahams will not cloud your perception of Fish Eagle River Lodge.
Kind Regards
Steve Mapstone"
"An enjoyable stay. Thank you."
"We stayed over for a wedding - and the venue served its purpose well! Clean room & bathroom. Honesty bar was well stocked. Didn't get to sample breakie as we left early - suggestion: they need a key box if you want to go early, we made a plan with something on their stoep. In other 4 star places, the touches like little soaps, shampoos etc are appreciated, we found that lacking here. Beautiful views."
"Great all round experience. Try Bar Bar Black Sheep restaurant as well."
"Enjoyed my stay and will be back. Steve and Kay are lovely people and I even considered extending my stay."
"Very peaceful, beautiful and pleasant and we enjoyed the kind and helpful hospitality."
"Pleasant friendly hosts. Pity about Steve being an Everton supporter. Beautiful setting."
