Escape the maddening crowd and big city lights. Come and catch your breath, relax and embrace the beautiful outdoors at Goxhill Trout Lodge. Set on a productive working farm just outside Himeville in the spectacular Southern Drakensberg, Goxhill Trout Lodge offers comfortable self-catering accommodation. With two large trout dams on the farm, guests also have access to excellent trout fishing and other fun water-based activities.
The lodge is a historic farm with a 100 year old Gracious Lady. The Kingfisher and Fish Eagle cottages are available as limited self-catering units in a beautiful garden, and we also have a number of beautiful campsites with upmarket facilities. Self-catering facilities include a microwave oven, fridge and freezer, cutlery, crockery, kitchen utensils, and braai facilities. All children welcome. Access to the Internet is available and laundry service are available on request.
Goxhill boasts the largest lake in the Underberg area. The Polela River which runs through the lake provides a natural breeding environment for trout. Fishermen have the opportunity of pitting their skills against wild trout, providing an exciting challenge. In addition, there is a second smaller dam on the farm managed by the Underberg Himeville Trout Fishing Club.
"We had two fantastic days at Gox hill. The campsite is beautiful. If peace and quiet is what you are looking for, look no further. A visit to the diary was definitely the highlight of our stay. Highly recommend!"
"We were not warned to bring drinking water and as there had been so much rain the water in the house was brown! This is a working dairy farm so quests must be prepared to be disturbed by farm activities and calling calves etc. The farm owner Rick was most helpful, sorting out a fishing boat for our use and providing assistance when required by our aged group."
"We arrived and set up our camp on a grassy site. Each site has a plug point and a tap. We picked the shadiest spot (furthest from the ablutions) so we could enjoy the view of the dam. The camping area is fenced with an electric fence so we were on alert with small kids the whole weekend! We loved wandering down to the dam and trying to entice the fish (no luck I'm afraid) but enjoyable outings nonetheless. The cows were busy calving so there was quite a lot of moo-ing and as it's a large dairy farm, a bovine aroma! The farm manager was more than happy for us to pop in and see the milking operations and tapped off a taste of fresh milk for us. The ablutions are basic but clean, could do with some towel rails or a shelf/table to put stuff down on though. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back."
"Goxhill farm was lovely. Beautiful campsites set on the lawns under the trees. The men had no luck with the fly fishing. The garden was an absolute gem to walk around looking at the flowers and fruit trees. The kids enjoyed the jungle gym. Rick was a lovely and happy host."
"We booked more than 2 weeks in advance, only to be told on the checkin night at approx 18:00 that there is no space anymore. They did arrange alternative accommodation for us at another place. Due to the late notification from them, we had no option but to take the alternative accommodation just to have a place to stay even though we didn't know what it looked like....very bad would not recommend them to anyone make holiday plans in advance."
"lovely big farm house with very friendly owner, staff and lovable dogs.<br />"
"Was passing thru Himeville and needed a safe spot to pitch my tent. Booked on Safarinow a couple days before was easy and responsive. The evening cost me 50 Rand what a bargain, used directions given found Goxhill easily. Campsite was adequate, with electricity and the ablutions were spotless with bath and shower option. I was also offered use of the communal kitchen and fireplace. nice touch for cold winter nights. The evening was pleasant, a bit of noise from the cows sleeping adjacent to me but way better than that of a noisy highway! All in all it exceeded my expectations and great value for money with a hassle free booking experience."
"Our stay was very nice and we will make use of Gox Hill again."
"The photos portrayed on the website is not of the cottage - Trout dam and surroundings really not nice, cottage extremely cold, ugly fireplace contraption which gave very little warmth, no heaters, no frying pan, no space to put your towel/clothing when showering, only basin to wash in, in the lounge area!!"
"Basic but perfect."
"The campsite, communal kitchen and ablution facilities were clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay and Rick was a real gentleman."
"Very clean - nice owner and friendly dogs - great book collection - amazing view."
"Wrong googlemaps link to the place! We got lost. Geyser also not regulating temperature very well and kitchen is not fitted with anything for cooking."
"We spent 3 nights here recently and thorougly enjoyed our stay. The rooms were very nice and serviced daily. Also, the owners were very helpful and willing to provide anything we required whether it was a braai, fishing rods etc. The rooms were also serviced daily which was a plus! Great location if you are considering to do the sai pass and are looking for affordable accom. The fishing was lacking but the day I went fishing was very windy/rainy so fly fishing wasnt easy and I'm sure the fish were not interested in feeding."
