Perchance standing on the spacious patio looking out over the Indian Ocean and beach framed by indigenous flora, you will see a flash of the utmost beauty as a pair of Knysna loeries fly into their nest in the wild banana plants. Maybe a hammerkop will come visiting or one of the shy deer who frequent the bush nearby. Its all possible in this retreat that will provide you with a holiday to remember. Being right on the beach and sheltered from the high winds that can buffet the apartments above it, this self-catering unit offers you a holiday of serenity and fun.

The three-bedroom, air-conditioned apartment sleeps six people and has an open-plan lounge, dining room and kitchen. There are views of the sea from both the breakfast counter, the cooking area and the lounge. The main en-suite bedroom offers spectacular views of the beach and sea, while its spa bath lets you have that extra moment of relaxation after a rejuvenating day at the beach. The second bathroom, located between the second and third bedrooms, is equipped with a shower. The rental includes bedding but excludes towels. The apartment is serviced before your arrival and after your departure, but not during your stay.

The flat-screen television has the full complement of DStv channels with the HD channels as a bonus. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped, including a fridge with a freezer. To add to the relaxation, there is a dishwasher in the kitchen. The scullery has a tumble-dryer and washing machines are available in the common laundry area. A security guard is on duty through the night and lifesavers are on duty during peak periods.

The complex offers secure private access to the beach over a rustic wooden bridge flanked by a small indigenous forest that cascades to the white-washed beaches. It also boasts a beautifully laid-out garden, anchored by a sparkling blue pool which is the ideal retreat when you've explored the beach sufficiently. The area itself has many lovely walks and places of interest. Well-stocked shops are available nearby, while the shopping malls at Shelley Beach are some 20 minutes drive away and offer most major departmental stores as well as cinemas.

"I would have scored it a 4* was it not for the cleaner coming in on the day of check out at 8am to start cleaning whilst check out time was at 10am. Really not acceptable as we were still having breakfast and packing up. When I complained to the owner she just responded with they have to clean for the next visitors. Surely any establishment should atleast have 2sets of linen. This really put a damper to an otherwise lovely stay. There is some other small maintenance issues and there is also no space in the cupboards to pack groceries as it is filled to the brim so we had to clear cupboard space. The location of the flat is brilliant, in a quiet part of the south coast and even though it was peak season we never experienced the crowds. Nice views from the patio. The main living area and main bedroom has aircon which was a lifesaver, the owner should consider aircon for the other rooms as well. The flat is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as it is a lot of stairs to get to the apartment."

"The accommodation is very basic granted, however it is still in need of a makeover. The shower head is too low for anyone over 1.7m and the geyser is set dangerously high. The unit is stuck in the 90's...Bed linen is clean but uncomfortably old. Kitchen area is nice. Overall 3/10"

"Flat is well situated on a private beach. It's cozy and secure, with all the basic holiday accessories. Although it caters for 6, might be a bit cramped with 6 people. Out of season, Port Edward is really quiet and a good getaway from the city.There are lots of stairs. From the parking to the flat. Something to be considered for older folk.The flat all round is not to bad and enjoyable but compared to other places we stayed, the place is over priced."
