Mountain Haven offers self-catering accommodation in the beautiful town of Kaapsehoop, from which to explore and experience the waterfalls, magnificent views, and wildlife that the area is famous for.Or use as a base ,as we are central to most attractions in Mpumalanga. We are here to attend to your needs, whether it be to light your braai, give you directions to the most interesting places or tell you about the History of this fascinating early Gold Rush Town once known as Duiwels Kantoor(Devil s Office) or maybe you d like to go on the Ghost Tour !
Malaria and Bilharzia Free.Safe to walk, day or night.
There is Horse Riding and exciting 6 km down hill scooter rides close by.Walk 10 minutes and you ll find battery Creek Falls ,30 metres high and a great place to cool off in the heat of the day,sit and meditate while the energy of the water drums onto the rocks and the spray gently caresses you,or stand beneath it and let it massage away the weariness of city life. The Pear Orchard (1 km) ,has braai s and a Dam with beautifully clear water around 2 metres deep, you can see right to the bottom and is a great place to swim, picnic, play family sport or braai under the trees.
Explore galleries of gnarled rocks or caves as you make your way to the edge of the escarpment (20 minutes walk) ,where the earth drops a 1000 metres into the Barberton valley below,on a moonlit night the local pass time, tipple and picnic blanket in hand,is to stroll up to the edge where you can see the lights of Nelspruit and Barberton 30 kms away.Or go up to see the sun rise over the Swazi Mountains.
The village itself has restaurants, bars, antiques and craft shops the Colonial style often interspersed with the quirky and esoteric,as many of the 120 or so locals are artists or crafts people.Watch out for the Wild Horses, they can sometimes give you a fright ,especially if they suddenly come looming out of the mist.No Spar or Petrol Station, the one small tuck shop we do have may have bread, milk or your brand of cigarettes so make sure you are well provisioned when you arrive, although the scenic drive down to Nelspruit is only about 20 minutes with no robots or stop streets till you reach the City and it s convenient shopping Malls (almost on every corner lol)
Accommodation is available in a variety of units ranging from 2 to 6 sleepers, basic but with everything you will need, each features an equipt kitchenette for preparing meals(Hot plate, microwave, toaster, kettle, bar fridge, crockery, cutlery and a whole range of utensils) and bathrooms fitted with a shower, a toilet and washbasin.linen is provided but guests need to bring their own towels. The units are in a lovely garden setting with plenty of braai areas, where you can sit, relax and ponder the adventures of the day
"Restful accommodation in this magical little town. The unit was neat, clean and equipped with all the essentials one would expect from a self-catering unit. Vincent is a gracious host, giving us info on attractions and things to do in the area. A must see is the stunning waterfalls only a few minutes walk away from the guest house. Mountain Haven is highly recommended if you are looking for a no frills, no fuss, relaxation spot away from the bustle of the big city."
"Vince was helpful in giving advice about the sightseeing in the town. Lovely view towards the mountains. Nice to sit in the garden if the weather permits. We were only two people in a two sleeper which sleeps four and the place is really small and compact. Although we knew to bring towels it is a hassle. The sleeper is fitted with enough crockery and cutlery to prepare a meal. No safe parking at the establishment."
""Mountain Haven" is a real gem, for an affordable price. Clean and comfortable with all the basic necessities for a self-catering weekend. Vince, the owner, if asked, will share his knowledge of the rich history and does the Ghost tour, very interesting! If you enjoy nature and the simpler things in life, this is the perfect place to stay."
"Magical town, excellent, informative and helpful host. Vincent helped us accommodate an unexpected guest on the Saturday without batting an eyelid. Thank you for your hospitality."
"Great place to stay, really loved it."
"nature awesome the owner needs to be more friendly and not stereotype is guests informed the tv was not working on the first day stayed for 4 nights and he was gone from the premises no reply"
"I enjoyed that there was enough self catering items to cook. There was hot water on all nights and the place is very clean. The lounge area is very cold during the day and night (great in summer!) But a bit too cold for winter - there is a heater though!!! And Vince was willing to answer any questions or show us what's what's in town :) The Guesthouse is lovely all round and easy to walk to anywhere in town."
"We loved the cosy room and private braai facility. The no fuss basic room was clean and quite adequate for a one night stay over. The bed however was terribly hard and made a restful night's sleep quite impossible. Perhaps you need revisit the mattress factory"
"The owner makes the stay worthwhile as he is friendly and helpful and really goes out of his way to make your stay pleasant. At the price it is also value for money though this establishment reminds me a bit of a backpackers; cheap accommodation that is neat and mostly clean, with the basic amenities. Ideal for someone on a budget that is not planning on spending much time in the room."
"The accomodation was clean and neat. The owner was the perfect host. We booked a 6 sleeper unit. On arrival he gave us another 4 sleeper unit so that we could be more comfortable."
"Vince is the best,he thinks ahead and is very helpful"
"We were well hosted, asked to enquire if we needed anything. Accommodation is adequate and suitable for a brief stay. You don't visit Kaapsehoop to stay in doors and so it suited what we needed. Met our expectations."
"We loved our stay. Everything you need, clean, cozy and friendly owner..We will definately be back in the summer . Wayne And Sue"
"THE WHOLE GUEST HOUSE NEEDS A RENOVATION. THE CURTAINS ARE DIRTY AND OLD. THE BED AND BEDDING WAS CLEAN AND COMFORTABLE. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO MY FRIENDS."
"Ek het geen klagtes nie dit was wonderlik"
"Not clean, cobwebs and dirty bedding! Very basic"
"Stay was nice and enjoyed the nature hikes. Host was friendly and knowlageable of the area"
"Paper thin walls between units caused our bed to be bumped every time the neighbors sat on their coach as well as being able to listen to every word of their conversations. Steep steel stairs up to first floor unit will be quite problematic for elder visitors. The bio dustbin in kitchen idea is a nice idea but the previous visitors left overs grew into maggots on our second day and smelled foul when we checked in.Warm water pressure was the worst - lots of excuses but still no solution."
"Accommodation was okish. One bed had a huge hole in the base and was only "Fixed" with a lot of cussions being put in the hole! A solid piece of wood could have been better. None of the doors could close properly. If you like rustic, you might like this.<br/><br/>ESTABLISHMENT RESPONSE:<br/><br/>After assessing the issues mentioned:<br/> We will recompense Marinda for the 'hole' in the bunk, but her child s discomfort was entirely unnecessary as we saw and asked after the family s well being every day and regret we were nt informed as we are equipt and available to resolve such a problem in a few short minutes.<br/> All the doors open and close with little effort.1 bedroom door did catch very slightly on the floor and the bathroom door due to moisture did fit a little too snuggly. Apologies for this ,we appreciate your imput and the issues have now been rectified."
"went on a bike trip. stayed over for 2 nights. very affordable, neat little place. Enjoyed our stay. loved the 2 dogs."
"enjoyed our stay thoroughly.Vince was very friendly and helpful."
"Great experience of small vibey village life.Had a comfortable stay in the basic accommodation. Will be back to do more roaming in the surrounding area."
"The place has a lot of character and has beautiful views. It's quiet and the garden is very pretty. It's clean and has everything needed for a quiet weekend. The town can be busy and there's a lot to be done - hiking to the escarpment, waterfall, cemetery and Adams calendar as well as beautiful little restaurants to eat at - The Bohemian being one of them."
"This place is dirty(Ash trays, micro wave floors etc). The linen needed replacement a year ago. For the 3 nights we stayed, i had to go and beg for water 4 times. My friend stayed there a week ago and he had the same experience. His wife did not even wanted to use the shower. The back yard look like a rubbish dump."
"Units were clean and comfortable. We stayed one night on our way to the Kruger. Vince was friendly with great advice on hiking and sightseeing activities."
"Warm and friendly welcome and nice clean accommodation in a beautiful scenic area. Helpful communication from Vince prior to and after booking. <br />"
"We had a wonderful time and Vince was very helpful. The units are quite small and I would recommend taking one that sleeps more than you need e.g. A 6 sleeper for 4 people."
"Alles was baie skoon en netjies. Vince, die eienaar het ons hartlik ontvang en mooi verduidelik wat ons alles in die omgewing kan doen en besigtig. Die omgewing is iets heel anders. Daar is die heerlikste eetplekkies met die lekkerste pannekoek. Ons sal sekerlik weer by Mountain Haven Gastehuis wil tuisgaan. Vir ons was 'n naweek veels te kort."
"Our Kids thoroughly enjoyed the walking trail, the horses and the fresh air. Thanks to Vince for ensuring we had all the info we needed."
"The facilities were adequate. Everything was clean and in working order."
"Vince was a perfect host during our stay at Mountain Haven. He took the time to inquire about what we intended to do while in Kaapsehoop and provided several pointers and explained where to go and what to do.Mountain Haven is a great place to relax and unwind."
"Really enjoyed the stay at Mountain Haven. Close to all in places in the little town, and Vince is a good host! Will visit again - and stay here again for sure!"
"Vince was a great host, the accommodation was excellent and much better than expected. Will definitely recommend to others."
"Vince was friendly and helpful. Arranged permits for us to go hiking and was accommodating in our check out time as we had run for several hours in the morning obviously needed to shower and change before heading home. Lots of hot water in the shower. Location close to Kaapsehoop with great views."
"Enjoyed the stay thoroughly. I have returned over again. The village is picturesque and has loads too see and do. An absolute must for the nature lovers who need a place to relax after spending the day exploring the area."
"We had a very nice stay, the owner Vince reminded us the day before arrival of all facilities and asked what we would like to do on our stay.Vince made sure we were catered for the whole time we were there."
"Very enjoyable stay. Vince is an excellent host."
"Very nice. We enjoy our stay. Vince you are an excellent host. The view very nice."
"Had a very comfortable and exciting stay at Mountain Haven. The owner was very informative showing us around this beautiful quaint village and taking us on a Ghost Tour (not for the faint hearted!) There is so much to do nearby, including Chimp Eden (Animal Planet fame) which next time I stay I will definitely visit. The views from the Village from the escarpment were to die for - a corner of paradise in this land of South Africa."
"I did not have a good experience at Mountain Haven Guest House. My back still pains from the poor mattress I had to sleep on, two rotten mattresses stacked on top of each other and than covered with linen to give the image of a cosy bed. When we arrived no one helped us it was really unprofessional and, I will not support them again."
"I did not enjoy my stay at all. Upon arrival I struggled to see the sign for the Guest House from the road, since it does not have signs on the road as all the other Guest Houses. It was raining and the parking was not paved and my car nearly got stuck in the mud! There's also no walkway from the parking to the main entrance, so my shoes were also full of mud. There are no towels in the Guest House and I was informed too late of this fact and arrived unprepared. There also was a big spider making a next on one of the single bed corners! Next time I'll pay a little more and stay in Kaapse Hoop villiage and not outside in the mud."
