Thembe Eco Lodge

Thembe Eco Lodge is situated on a hillside overlooking the Kwa-Mazambane Reserve in the northern most region of the Maputaland Wetlands of KwaZulu-Natal. This setting lends itself to the most beautiful view over the valley below, and from some of the rooms you are able to see the third, and biggest, lake of Kosibay. The entire lodge has a well-kept lawn and a range of plants which all complement the natural feel of the surrounding nature, hence the "eco" in the name. It is also the place for fishermen, families, groups, or businessmen who want to refocus and relax. The self-catering units are comfortable and well-designed and offer all the linen and utensils you may need each with a bathroom with shower, barbeque area and a deck from which guests can sit and watch the sun rise over the African landscape. The tiled floors offer great relief from the sand outside and help in keeping the rooms looking their best at all times.

"<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: calibri;">I shall not recommend visiting Thembe Eco Lodge until thecurrent management is replaced (although friendly and helpful). The lodge in onsale and hopefully the new owners will fix it. In a nutshell: TV is not working( gusts damage the remotes so we stop providing them); Air-condition toosmall for the room size thus useless; very basic crockery and of the poorestquality; the swimming pool is suitable for few, very small, kids only. Althoughthere is no mention of vehicle requirements I dont see how a sedan will makeit through the deep send treksno need for 4x4 but at least a medium size SUV.</span></p>"

  • "Never again."

    29 December 2014

"For the 5 days our group camped at Thembe we were basically the only campers and it soon became clear why. On the first Sunday we had to go and request the owners child to turn down the music which was extremely loud. The ablution facilities had only one urinal which was blocked when we arrived. The following day the only toilet available started giving problems as it would not flush because of a blockage. One of the gents in our group went to complain at the office. The reply was that we must accept that this is not a city and things do take time to get sorted.Shortly after that the owner Martina came over and started insulting us saying that we blocked the drain on purpose by flushing a roll of toilet paper down the drain. She told us in no uncertain terms that she doesn't need our money and we can leave if we were not happy. Our request for a full refund for the remainder of the time and our promise to then find another camping site quickly changed her mind. She was very aggressive and even told on of our guys to leave if we are not happy with the place. On our insistence to get access to a toilet in one of the chalets the problem was solved. In the camp they have a Tucshop with an alarm button for potential buyers to alert the owners. On one of the rainy afternoons when I wanted to catch up on some sleep, I was disturbed at least 20 times by the alarm. No consideration for the guest at all."

"The Lodge was a little bit disappointing although the view was perfect from our apartment and it was a safe environment. I will suggest that the owner/manager of the Lodge visit other Lodges to update themselves with the present operating and management of a lodge. Unfortunately it was not value for money."

  • "Neat and cosy"

    20 June 2013

"The the Lodge is neat and cosy. Its got all a person need for a one night stay. Since it was our first time we would suggest that there is better directions(or map) given to us beforehand. Please mention to future visitors to take the Kosi Bay Camp turn. No clear markings from this immediate, crucial turn. Especially, if it's already dark. We still had a "blast". Thank you!"

  • "Very bad"

    04 February 2013

"We arrived at 14.00. In the rondavel they offered us, the freezer door was not closing, the fridge was very bad. The mattress was so soft, that my husband couldn't get off. No towels, no soap, very poor cutlet, glasses and crockery. Martina was not there, only a maid. When she saw, how shocked we are, she showed us another rondavel. It was a little bit better, but also without towels, no soap, the mattress a little bit harder. When the maid called Martina,to tell here that we want to move to no.4 she was shouting at the maid and told here, when she (Martina) is coming at 16.00 or 16.30, she wanted to talk to us. The maid are not allowed to let us move into the little better accomodation. This is not our style to behave with other people. We left Thembe Eco Lodge (the "luxurious" accomodation) and booked another accomodation. We were very glad with our stay in Kosi Bay Lodge and stayed one day longer."

  • "Thembe Eco lodge"

    07 January 2013

"The state of the establishment is good, however theres room for improvement, all the interior furniture needs replacement, the beds, the fridge, micro oven etc. and the customers must be informed that the road is better driven in a 4X4."

"Very difficult to find. No propper directions to the Lodge. You need a 4x4 to get to the Lodge. This fact was not revealed in any part of the description of the lodge."
