Utshwayelo, Kosi Mouth Lodge and Camp

Kosi Bay, in the far north eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal, is a system of four lakes ranging from freshwater to saline, that feed into the ocean at the mouth. It forms part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park - a natural World Heritage. Age old traditions, passed down by generations of tribal existence, still continue to this day, such as ancient fishing kraals/utshwayelos erected and tendered by the resourceful Thonga people. Kosi Bay has been described as 'a wonderful aquarium and the most gorgeous aviary'.Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp, a community owned project, is the most north eastern accommodation in South Africa. We are the closest lodge in Kosi Bay to the sea and are situated at the entrance gate to the Kosi Bay Mouth Reserve and Estuary, 2.5 km from the beach. We are easily accessible in a sedan and are 5 km from the Mozambique border. Walk down and wade around the traditional fish traps and snorkel in the estuary with its kaleidoscope of over 200 species of tropical fish, surf from unspoiled beaches, boat on the magnificent lakes, or fly fish from the rocks. Do the turtle walk and watch big turtles lumbar out of the ocean to lay eggs on the beach, and little ones scampering back into the sea, from October to March. Take a guided hike or walk kilometres of pristine bush and beach, and swim in turquoise waters or just read a book under magnificent ancient Umdoni trees next the swimming pool and enjoy a sundowner at the bar. Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp has it all experience life with us in paradise.

"What an amazing place! we loved every moment of our stay. The natural setting of the Kosi river mouth is unique in my experience and an ideal place for snorkeling in a safe setting with an impressive variety of sea life. Our stay was made special by the staff who went out of their way to make life as easy as a holiday should be."

  • "Boat cruise on the lakes."

    16 May 2018

"Mike was the perfect host, attending to all our needs and informing us of things to do in the area which we appreciated so much.On the negative side we do think the facilities need upgrading ie laundry and camp wash up area as well as the Braais .We loved the pool area , communal kitchen and the pub area.I do believe in Mikes capable hand and the few negatives sorted it will be the best place to stay."

  • "Camping stands are an awesome size with excellent shade"

    05 May 2018

"Loved the idea of the communal kitchen and honesty bar.Overall needs a bit of work, no hot water in the scullery, leaking showers and doors that did not close and the braai per stand was just a truck wheel hub with no grid.A little more interaction from staff explaining the setup would go a long way"

  • "fantastic walk from Utshwayelo"

    06 April 2018

"Nice Position and easy accessible in Cosy Bay Mouth. We met great People at the poolbar who told us about the walk with Jeffrey next day. We joined them and had a fantastic experience exploring the rainforest, sanddunes and snorkelling in the lagoon at Kosi Bay Mouth. We booked a tented hut in a secluded area (according to SafariNow description) but got the Standard accommodation."

  • "Excellent location and very neat and well-kept facilities"

    21 October 2016

"Excellent location as you are literally right next to the entrance gate to the nature reserve. Lovely pool area with ample seating under large trees. Can easily get to the lodge with a small sedan. Lodge itself is in tip top condition. If you reside at the lodge, you only have to pay the gate fee once for your entire stay, so can go to the beach multiple times.<br/>Campsites are wonderful, with lots of shade and the reed walls around it is excellent for privacy and wind protection. <br/>If you dont have a 4x4 and are on a shoestring budget and cant afford a paid for trip down to the beach (2.5km does not sound far but especially walking back up isnt fun and games unless you're very fit, considering you walk is soft sand all the way - totally worth doing at least once though) you can set out as if you're going to walk down and you might get lucky and get a ride with a friendly holidaymaker with space in his/her car. We got lucky twice. Kosi Bay mouth itself - spectacular. Fantastic snorkeling. wow. Totally worth the effort!"

    09 April 2016

"Had nice stay - weather wasnt great which was a shame and felt there was a certain lack of information for first time visitors...... camp could do with a map of the layout of the area and maybe offer shorter walks??"

  • "Lovely place to camp"

"Huge and private sites with lovely large trees. Ablution block is well set up and spotless. <br />Location cannot be beat, right next to the gate for Kosi Bay.<br />"

  • "Highly recommended"

    03 October 2015

"We had a wonderful stay in Utshwayelo Lodge, the staff was very friendly, the location fantastic. The communal kitchen was well equipped and clean. The camp grounds are very nice and with only one party per site you have a lot of privacy. The staff organised day trips for us. Very nice and highly recommended. Probably the best snorkeling for kids, since you can go in Kosi River Mouth and see lots of tropical fish.<br />Peter from Germany"

"Except for the misunderstanding that electrical power was available throughout, the stay was awesome. Staff were friendly and helpful.<div>Bathrooms were clean with warm water.</div><div>Pool area clean and well kept.</div><div><br /></div>"

  • "Hope YOU can find it"

    29 March 2013

"We booked into the camp, and paid half the fee, but were never able to find it. The directions offered to the camp are plainly horrible. 'Go 70km towards Kosi bay and follow the signs'. We passed through, and never saw a sign. Next day we accidentally stumbled upon the camp, which could have easily been directed to as '100 meters before the Mizambique border post turn right and you will see a sign leading to the camp after a while'. Also we tried to call the camp 22 times; all without the phone being answered. We never received our down payment back."

  • "Pleasant"
