"Len was very attentive. We were able to self cater with no fuss - found all our dishes washed up for us almost immediately (very comfortable). Note the need to phone in advance for the gate key code."

  • "Fantastic family holiday"

    06 January 2014

"We are family of nine spanning three generations, grandparents, son and daughter with husband and four grandchildren aged between six and nine. We spent two weeks at the lodge and we all had a super time full of activities and relaxation. The accommodation was spacious and tastefully decorated. We had a whole house to ourselves with four bedrooms, both internal and outside sitting and dining areas and a big private outside fireplace to sit around in the evenings. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make us feel at home and to create a festive atmosphere for Christmas and New Year's Eve. We very much enjoyed the chef's cooking which made the best possible use of locally available meat, fresh fruit and vegetables. The freshly baked cakes and muffins he produced were also memorable. The gardens are well kept, full of colourful birds and the swimming pool was very popular with young and old. There was a wide range of activities we could choose from, all organised to suit our personal wishes, whether it was jogging at dawn, a bush picnic at lunchtime, a game drive or bush walk at sunset, sleeping in a tent or climbing a mountain to enjoy the view and to see the cultural remains of an ancient population which used to live there. We also went clay-pigeon shooting, fishing in the river, horse riding, feeding orphaned baby antelopes and playing with lion cubs, sometimes at neighbouring farms. We learned an enormous amount about the wildlife from the rangers who accompanied us. They were particularly accommodating with the children, answering all their questions and finding interesting things for them to see and to do. Needless to say the children were completely captivated. There is a waterhole next to the lodge with a viewing hide. We saw the occasional warthog family there. Footprints suggested that impala, eland, wildebeest, kudu and others also visit at night, but we did not see them there personally. This time of the year the animals can find water in many places so they tend to spread out. On the games drives and walks, though, we saw plenty of wildlife including giraffes, warthogs, impalas, waterbucks, blesboks, hartebeests, ostriches and jackals. It did sometimes rain, but normally not for a whole day except for one day which made for some interesting driving and impressive views of the river. The nice thing about this time of the year is the many young animals you can see. We even had the chance to save a baby baboon that we found beaten up and abandoned by its parents. The absence of dangerous animals in the park makes possible to get out of the safari car and move around which we found to be a big advantage especially with children. On the way back to the airport we stopped at an elephant sanctuary, so we did not miss out on seeing those magnificent animals, too. There are mosquito's, but the area is malaria free, so all you need to do is put on mosquito repellant without having to take any anti malaria pills. So this was a perfect family holiday which was also very affordable as the management generously included our drinks and most of our activities in the full board package. There is a very nice collection of artifacts in the lodge's curio shop from which we brought back some beautiful masks and ostrich eggs. When we left it felt like leaving friends and we very much hope to return another year."

  • "Excellent"

    02 January 2014

"Excellent, my bookings have been upgraded by the Owner from tented Camp to a luxury self catering accommodation, every thing was just perfect."

  • "Disappointed"

    08 July 2013

"I do not normally write reviews but I do feel that people should know what they have to expect. I am truly disappointed with Bushman/San Safari Lodge. I read all these great reviews and it was not at all what we experienced. Initially we were very exited as we saw two giraffes on our way to the main lodge and when we arrived the main lodge looked really beautiful from the outside. We unfortunately got send to the "guesthouse" which is were we booked our one night stay. The guesthouse unit A was spacious but dirty and falling apart. It is not anywhere near the main lodge and very close to the road where the locals played loud music until three in the morning. We felt so uncomfortable there and we definitely had no pease and quite.I am sure if you book at the main lodge you will experience what everyone else talks about but the guesthouse unit was not worth the money we payed to stay there."

  • "Beautiful"

    12 July 2012

"Me and the family enjoyed our stay, it was all and more than we expected. The staff was excellent very accommodating, food was divine. Just 1 downer which isnt the lodges fault my fiance' lost her cellphone on the game drive but Len sent the guys out to look for it but they had no luck, besides that all was well."

    03 January 2012

"My family and I are ever so grateful for the service we received at the lodge. The price was also exactly what we were looking for. The staff are so friendly that you feel like you are at home. The location is perfect and the food was the same quality I would expect from a 5 Star hotel. My family and I had the best holiday we have ever had, and we will definitely be returning to the Bushmen/San Safari Lodge. I can highly recommend the lodge to anyone looking for a good relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Thanks again to all the staff at the lodge. Jason"

  • "Adventure and relaxation for honeymooners"

    19 April 2011

"We had the most wonderful honeymoon at the Bushmen/San Safari Lodge. It was just the right mix of adventure in the bushveld and relaxation at the lodge, at your own pace. Andre and the rest of the staff were excellent, attentive hosts. There were so many special touches that made our stay a pleasure. The meals, especially the three-course dinners by the resident chef, were out of this world. There are many activities at the lodge and surrounding areas. Our only regret is that we were only there for a week and couldn't enjoy them all in that short time. We will return with friends and family in the summer."

  • "Bushman/ SAN safari Logde"

    31 December 2009

"Great drive up from ORT airport via the R21 set the stage for us.Upon Arrival Andre was there to greet us.Our rooms were off the main hangout area close by the pool, with splendid vista over the watering hole over the tree tops to infinity. All the staff are great, special mention to Burt (just the best!) and Hannes.Burt took us on game drives whenever we wanted to, what a great guy, his knowledge is extensive and he's happy to chat and help out whenever. Hannes was also great company - These guys are what you need when in this environment, they give you such a sense of security, and impart such knowledge you just want to get more and more involved. The lodge is great for families with young children, its located in a cooler area so you never get the full wrath of the Limpopo sun. we went on 2 game drives a day (morning & eve), met the san/bushmen, saw white Lions, buffalo, tons of impala, kudu, hog, Giraffe- many other types of Bok and a few rare birds.Such a great region and well worth the trip.Note: my mother flew over from Jamaica to celebrate her 80th. On the night of her birthday, Burt brings out a cake [which he had made himself] along with champagne and song - top draw stuff - made my mother a very happy lady :) "

  • "Superb!!!!"

    07 December 2009

"My stay at the Bushman lodge was absolutely lovely. Andre, Hannus and Burt (and his lovely parents) made me feel very much at home. I could freely move around, got my fair share of game drives, visited the white lions and had shooting lessons !!! Food was delicious. And the views over the Transvaal are breathtaking. I will def be back for another long relaxing pampering weekend! Marjolein (from the Netherlands)"

  • "Amazing and relaxing weekend"

    10 November 2009

"Me and my husband, Louis, needed a relaxing break very urgently and we have found it at this TRULY amazing lodge. The peace and tranquility were good for soul and mind.Burt was an excellent host and the staff were always friendly. The food was of very high standard and it was noticed that everybody at this Lodge aimed to make our stay as comfortable, relaxing and special as possible. Our evening with the Bushmen were something always to treasure and we take our hats of for a gem like this, that still values the South African guest, as we have experienced in the past that it is difficult to have a very good and affordable break, as a South African, in our own country.Bushmen/San Safari Lodge, we thank you for this.WE WILL DEFINATLY BE BACK!!!!! Louis & Elize van der Linde, Pretoria."

  • "A Pleasure to stay"

  • "Fantastic Experience"

    02 November 2009

"Just a few points on my experience at the Bushmen / San Village- Help all along the road- Lovely salad prepared at 23h00 arrival time (supposed to be 17h00) after having an accident on the road and constant telephonic support to ensure my safe arrival. Not to mention the very welcome strong drink prepared by Bert :-)- Very friendly staff at all times- They literally make you feel 'part' of the bush and I felt very at home- Website doesn't do it any justice - you have to see for yourself.190% for professionalism, value for your money and an experience of a lifetime.- I've been all around the world and seen most places in SA but this is one of a kind. You feel strangely at home in a very remote but STUNNING lodge. The panoramic views of Bush, Bush, more bush and mountains are amazing. The constant chirp and chatter of birds and running fountain water compliment the Lodge and views.- Completely and utterly stunning - if there is such a saying and if not, The Bushmen / San Village created it for me.Some of the activities I got to enjoy...- Clay Pigeon Shooting- Cross bow shooting- Fishing- Walk with the Bushmen- A Bushmen presentation at the Boma- Game drives - And many more available :-)I only spent 3 days there unfortunately... next time it'll be longer :-)Thanks guys... you made it special for me :-)"

  • "How beautiful life can be!"

    05 May 2009

"On arriving at the gates of the lodge we were amazed at finding an oasis in the middle of the bushveld. The beautifully colourful plants and shrubs as well as the undulating lawns were a welcoming sight. We were initially greeted by two friendly, tail wagging Jack Russels - Bruno and Spotty. From the moment we stepped into the main lodge, and for the duration of our six day stay, we were made to feel like special guests by Burt, Andre, Hannes and all the staff. We stayed in the tented camp and found our tent to be bright, spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed soaking in the the en-suite bath. We have never experienced so much birdlife in the bush. The mornings were a joy due to the hive of bird activity around the campsite. It was not long before we were visited by Kerneels, the tame mongoose, together with Bruno and Spotty. Kerneels was full of energy and continuously entertaining. The game drive with Burt was very informative and inspired us to follow up with daily walks in the bush around the well marked roads to view the game again. The evenings at the boma were also a highlight -enjoying the crackling wood fires andbraais. On the last evening of our stay we appreciated a visit from a bushman family and learning a litlle about their culture and way of life. We will never forget sitting back, relaxing and viewing the stars and magnificent milky way in the clear, clear night sky.We will also not forget the friendliness and efficiency of all the staff, especially Maggie and Anderson. We must compliment the culinary skills of the kitchen staff and the creative gourmet meals they prepared. We will be back! "

  • "Exceeding all expectaions - again!"

I can highly recommend the Bushmen / San Safari Lodge whether it's a group holiday, a family get away or a romantic weekend away ... they cater for it all with love and style! It is the perfect weekend away. Thank you! Thank you!"

  • "San Bushman safari lodge tented camp April 2009"

    08 April 2009

"My husband, myself and our teenage daughter spent a week in Bakubung in the Pilanesberg and were looking forward to a nice, quiet stay in a luxury tent out in the bush in Lephalale for a long weekend (just before the easter break). We set off from the Pilanesburg at a leisurely rate with our VW Polo with trailer attached and got to the lodge at around 4pm.Although Andre had warned us, we found the road leading up to the lodge to be quite hair-raising since the bottom of the vehicle was low and with weight of the inmates and the trailer, had to make sure we did not damage the sump.We were told that rains had been extremely heavy over the past few weeks so the roads would have to be fixed again. When we eventually got up to the lodge, sweating and muttering, the car covered in brown dust, we were not disappointed.Fearing that the Lodge and tents would not live up to the pictures on the website, we were pleasantly surprised and delighted to find out that it was actually beautifully kitted out, the surroundings and reception area were absolutely stunning and one could immediately feel a sense of calm walking through the entrance hall over a little bridge with koi swimming happily beneath it and the monkey (which I thought was real at one stage) and all the other stuffed animals looking benevolently down from the walls. We were cordially welcomed by Bert (and Kerneels, the tame mongoose which Bert had rescued from the road and brought home).Kerneels spent his time nipping at our toes (in open sandals) and generally running around chirping excitedly at our arrival. We were shown around and were very impressed with the chalets which were each individually beautifully decorated and had great views. Our abode was a luxury tent sleeping four, with comfortable chairs and a table on the front "stoep".Very comfortable, rustic stone bathroom with shower, and window overlooking the valley so one could sit in the bath and look out at the view.We had a communal thatched kitchen at our disposal, fully kitted with large fridge, freezer and all the mod cons, a dining room and a breakfast nook made out of stone and thatched, which we were fortunate to have to ourselves since Andre and Hannes had just returned from an overseas trip and were not up to entertaining hoards of guests so we were lucky to be the only ones in camp.We met the San bushmen and Bert entertained us around the fire in the boma (conveniently situated outside our tent and where we spent a few happy hours gazing into the fire with our drinks) with tales of the San and their lifestyle. He also told us what the Lodge were doing to help the San people sustain their way of life.Staff catered to our every whim and although we went the self-catering route, we had a superb dinner on Saturday night in the lodge in an open dining room with millions of stars overhead and a romantically set table with candles and flowers..Although there were walks and game drives to be had, we were content just to laze around, either reading on our own stoep, lazing at the icy cold pool overlooking the valley, or sipping gin and tonics on the verandah at the lodge (with Kerneels determined to nip feet or hands or whatever he could get his little claws on, try to stick his head into the tea-cup or coldrink glass, dig holes to get bugs to eat, and when he tired of this, lay prostrate on the ground, paws in the air for his belly to be rubbed). Our daughter befriended the two very handsome male jack russells, indeed, they went to the extent of creeping into the tent to lie on her bed when she thought we were not looking. All in all, we were extremely sorry to leave, Andre and the guys have a sure-fire recipe on how to make guests feel welcome and nothing is too much troubleAs South Africans we often find that places like this are over commercialised or aimed at the overseas market and often priced out of the regular South African's pocket.Happily this was not the case, we will definately be going back there sometime in the future, especially when we feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the ratrace we live in...Thanks to all involved, Andre, Hannes of the Kalahari, and last but not least, Bert who also kept us amused and entertained with his bush stories.... glad the hyena did not get you Bert!!Joyce, Sam and Chris"

  • "Enjoyable stay"

We enjoyed the game drives.Regards Lucille "

  • "Very good"

"Beautiful, interesting, friendly and relaxing... very good.Luxury but not too much, making it a very down to earth place to enjoy."

  • "The best ever"

    06 March 2009

"Our stay was awesome. The hospitality was superb, way better than anything we've experienced anywhere else. We stayed in a tent and it was super comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. The game drives were informative and fun. The setting for the Lodge is truly beautiful. And the food....well we came home a bit heavier than when we left. Thank you Bert, Bruno, Spotty and all the staff for making it wonderful. We'll be back!"

  • "Fabulous view"

    02 March 2009

"Fantastic place with delightful staff. We were very well looked after and as we were the only group there, there was no pressure to do things to an itiniary. Two wonderful dogs and a fabulous view from the cottages. The only very big disappointment was that there were no Bushmen there. They are taken back to the Kalahari every couple of months so there are times when they are not there. I do feel that guests should be informed of this when booking as that is the main attraction of the reserve because there are no predatory animals. Check whether they are in situ before you go and you will have an amazing time."

  • "Absolutly AMAZING!!"

    23 February 2009

"My girlfriend and i got completely lost so the 3 and a half hour journey turned into 6...On arrival we were warmly greeted by Burt & Lara with a little welcoming cocktail. We were shortly shown to our room which was really beautiful and very comfortable. The only slight concern i had was the privacy in the safari lodge room, but regardless we LOVED IT!! And Rarely saw any of the other guests. Being our 2 year anniversary i asked Burt if we could make the weekend as romantic and special as possible, What we received was beyond anything i could of asked for, The romantic 1st dinner by candlelight under the stars, the awesome champagne breakfast looking into the bush, the champagne picnic/lunch in the middle of the bush (with a full bed set i must add) & the romantic last dinner in the boma next to the fire place... You guys really did exceed my expectations!! The staff at the lodge were extreamly friendly & the service was fantastic!! The food was great and you will NEVER go hungry!!Kirneels the little banded mongoose added a great smile ad laughter to our trip, What an awesome little oek!! On departure we received a CD with pictures of the 2 of us from throughout the stay and what a touch it was! i cant begin to thank Burt & Lara enough for the extra effort they kept seeming to put in. I highly recommend this place for a relaxed getaway in the bush and service with a smile, nothing is to much for these great people. Thanks again for an awesome experience that will never be forgotten!! SEE YOU SOON, Thats for sure!!!"

  • "The best holiday we've had!"

    20 February 2009

"From the moment we arrived we were waited on hand and foot. All the staff helped us with our luggage to our luxury tent which was quite a surprise. We have never stayed in this kind of accommodation and were pleasantly surprised. We have 3 children (ranging from 18 months to 11 years) and all of them had an absolute ball. They loved the tent and especially loved the bow and arrow shooting and game drives. The service was outstanding and the food excellent. The massage was wonderful and relaxing. We really felt like we could've stayed there a week longer. We have already recommended this establishment to friends and family and would love to go back and hopefully next time meet the bushmen. Bushmen San Safari is like a hidden secret and i think if more people knew about it they would be too busy and have to expand! Many thanks to Bert and all his wonderful staff for a fantastic stay!"

  • "Excellent"

    27 September 2008

"The best thing about this lodge are the hosts. They are only happy when the guests are happy. We field like friends, not guests and it is not given to many hosts to accomplish that. So our greatest compliments. And not to mention the lodge itself. It is beautiful! (Just a little bit more privacy for the room-guests would be welcome, but that is just a minor thing). And we really think you could make even more of the bushmen activities. When you wrote that you had real bushmen living there we didn't realise that you meant the last remaining traditional bushmen (there is a slight difference in that (-:)When we come back we want to get much deeper into their lifestyle and thoughts. Us Western people can learn so much from them! "

  • "Very pleasant."

    26 September 2008

"We returned well rested. We saw lots of birds. The stars were very bright. The food was delicious and the staff very friendly and attentive. Especially the visit with the Bushmen was a highlight.Special thanks to Isak, Leanne, Tulela and Blommetjie for their hospitality.Andre and Burt were also very kind and friendly. We hope to be back soon and to be able to spend more time with the Bushmen."

  • "Too short a stay"

    15 September 2008

"We loved every minute of our stay - once we got there. A break down in communication and no signs on the gate made our start a bit difficult but ... once we were 'found' by Burt our R&R began in earnest. Our bush cottage was beautifully situated so that we could watch the birds, and the eland and warthog coming down to the pan. Delicious meals appeared when we did - we slept in and idled the days away - so enjoying just being in the garden, that Burt couldn't prise us out for morning or evening walks or drives. We did go to see the white lions though and they were worth seeing. Our 2 days and 3 nights were far too short a stay - we were thoroughly spoilt. Many, many thanks to all who made our stay so enjoyable."

"We have searched high and low for the perfect holiday destination that would cater for all our needs and never in a million years thought we would find such a place. What a beautiful destination! Receiving such a warm welcome on arrival, we knew we were in for a treat. The room was beautiful and equipped with almost everything making it so comfortable. The food.... BRILLIANT..!!! Don't think you are gonna starve... We all had to go on a diet after this holiday. All the staff carried us on their hands at all times. We were spoiled every second of the day. All activities on and off the premises were five star! And we have to mention, Burt, you are Excellent with kids!!! She is still crying for you. Never a dull moment for young and old, relaxing at the same time. BUSHMEN/SAN SAFARI LODGE earns a 5 STAR! Nature at its best!!"

We would not hesitate to recommend the bushmen/san lodge to any of our friends or family. It is well worth a visit. "

  • "Fantastic"

    03 May 2008

" Even before we arrived, I made contact with Andre and was amazed with his friendly manner. With such a warm and friendly manner, one could not but feel welcome. On arrival we experienced the warmest welcome we have ever received at any of our destinations thus far. The accommodation and setting was to dream for. We were slightly uncertain what to expect, but big was our surprise when on the first night, Andre and his staff prepared a meal fit for a king. Only afterwards did we find out that Andre had given his head cook off and that Andre did all the cooking himself. Fantastic to say the least. All our meals were of the highest quality. The hospitality during our stay was unbeatable. Nothing was ever too much trouble for themand they really went out of their way to accommodate everyone at the Lodge and Tent Camp. The visit and walk with the Bushmen (Isak and Blommetjie) was a very special experience that will stay with us forever. What fantastic people they are. If only we could apply more of their knowledge to our own lives. We really enjoyed the activities such as the game drive, bow and arrow and clay pigeon shooting tremendously. Wish we only had more time with these fantastic people.Andre, Bertie, Hannes and their staff made our stay a wonderful experience to be remembered for ever. There is no doubt in our minds that we will be back with them soon, to enjoy some more of their hospitality and to learn more of life.Money and words can unfortunately not say thank you enough for the privilege of meeting such a wonderful group of people and sharing such a wonderful experience with them.A BIG, BIG thank you to you all for a wonderful time. Hope to see you soon.Niel & Michelle Smit"

The food was also great but the highlight wasmeeting the San people and getting a glimpse of their lives. Their simple way of life certainly makes you think twice about our "overloaded" lives in the city.Thank you Andre, Hannes,Isak and family and the camp staff for a great time."

  • "Magic Weekend"

    09 September 2007

"We found the Bushmen / San Village Tented Camp an absolutely fantastic place to enjoy a weekend getaway. We are both geologists and although we spend most of our lives in the bush living in tents we had a fantastic time wallowing in the luxury of the tented accommodation with the added benefits of having our own fire pit, outside shower with hot water and a open air bath that we could enjoy with a glass of wine while looking at the stars! We were instantly made to feel at home by Andre, Hannes and the staff who looked after us and our every requirement. We also particularly enjoyed the game walks and drives and found our guides Bertie and Stephanus incredibly knowledgeable and highly entertaining, and mostly appreciated the fact that they were ready and willing to answer all our questions and stop to look at anything from rocks, birds, plants and game. We also had the pleasure of being present at the opening ceremony of the rock pool and were delighted to be the first guests be invited to sample this wonderfully appropriate decadence. We were sorry to have missed the Bushmen, as they were away on a photo shoot in Namibia, but we will definitely use that as an excuse to return for another visit. We are looking forward to it and are busy recruiting our friends to join us next time.Again, thank you to all the staff at the Bushmen / San Village Tented Camp for making it an absolutely wonderful and unforgettable weekend! We will see you again!"

  • "Bad rain, good day"

    15 January 2007

"We were very unlucky due to the rain, which was too hard during the Saturday, therefore in our game drive, we didn't see a lot of animals... In addition, we couldn't join the dinner with the bushmen. However the treatment of the lodge was fantastic, the food has been the best that I have tried in South Africa, and very nice environment. We are very happy with the people of the lodge and Andre who gave us a lot of facilities to have fun. Thanks for it.Please, go to Bobidi, and take the Rhino room, it is very romantic..."

  • "True Afrikaner Hospitality"

    17 January 2006

"We were booked on a full board and the meals provided were truely South african. Very well prepared and always certainly filling after a game drive or walk. The camp is well prepared for even a visitors like us. We are used to luxury on a vacation and we tried to 'rough it' by staying at the tented camp. I must admit, it was not really 'roughing it' as all the essentials were provided - running water (even warm water if you get the donkie going), toilets, fridge, bedding, wood etc. And if you are into chopping wood for the fire an axe is provided. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. If you make a reasonable request it was always attended to immediately. We sat down with the stasff on the first day and planned the week ahead - additional game drieves, visits to other farms and places, walks, horse riding etc, and the staff organised it all within an hour or so. And none of the plans made hadf to be changed or postponed and we were taken to all the activities on time every time. The game drives were well planned and we were told lovely stories and facts on the animals by Bertie (our game Driver). It was always fun to go out with him as he made the trips very interesting. I liked the fact that we had to search for animals as we drove and could not rely on opther game drivers to inform us of where game was spotted. This ensured that we kept our eyes and ears on the task at hand and one start seeing so mmuch more if you have to concentrate to find a Kudu or other animal. Bertie also paid attention to smaller animals and plants which is refleshing. The bushman were a great treat and thay make you laugh at their witty stories. Their art is amazing. It was a great priviledge to walk with them in the feld and that they were there to answer ones questions on plants and animals. This establishment deserves my recommendation and I will certainly return with no hesitation at all."

  • "Review - San Village Tented Camp "

    24 October 2005

"A stay at the San Village tented camp is a wonderful experience for those who wish to be close to nature, and to meet the San people and experience a little of their culture. The camp is rustic, with no electricity, and you have to light the boiler well in advance of an anticipated hot shower. Of course, the open air showers and bath are a magnificent feature of the camp, and more exciting than a hot, city-style shower anyway. The kitchen facilities are excellent, the tents comfortable and well equipped, the ablutions clean - and we wanted for nothing during our stay. The highlights were sitting around the campfire with the bushmen, and climbing the mountain with them to visit the 600 year old clay pots. Sitting on the verandah in the cool early morning breeze, listening to nothing but the sounds of the magnificent birdlife, is something all city dwellers need to experience. The hospitality extended by all the staff, and the knowledge of our tour guide, made this a repeatable (and promotable) experience - and not only will we be back, but with our friends too!"
