Tau Game Lodge

On the far Northern border of South Africa lies a beautiful area known as the Great Marico and it is in this spectacular setting, in Malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve, that Tau Game Lodge is situated.

Privately owned Tau Game Lodge was built in 1995 and overlooks a vast natural waterhole, which attracts a variety of game, as does the diverse vegetation, which thrives in the fertile topsoil. The Lodge was designed to reflect the natural surroundings and makes use of the natural resources wherever possible.

The main body of the Lodge is two-leveled and has a comfortable lounge, plunch pool, curio shop, bar and dining-room which are semi open-air and overlook the waterhole.

Delicious buffet breakfasts and lunches are generally served in the main building or on the verandah next to the plunge pool and dinner is served in a cosy boma under the stars. Situated at an easy 4 hours driving distance from Johannesburg, Tau, the place of the lion, can host and accommodate up to 60 people. Tau Game Lodge has a state-of-the-art convention centre suitable for up to 150 delegates.

The Lodge is child friendly offering special kiddies drives for children below 6 years of age. From 6 years onwards children are allowed on the adult safaris subject to management discretion, please enquire about our child rates and policy.

  • "The game drives and amazing sightings"

    11 April 2018

"The staff at Tau were all very friendly, service at the meals was excellent,.We were disappointed with the quality of the food-having stayed at several similar priced private lodges before, the food was definitely inferior I think dinner at least should be a plated meal unless it is in the Boma.We had the same salad for dinner and lunch every day with the same olives and feta, the only added salads were beetroot (very old fashioned ) and couscous on 2 days. T he potatoes were always soft roasted potatoes -baked would have been nice The food just needed a bit of 'modernizing'/flair, as did the wine list! The kudu fillet , and bobotie were delicious. On 2 occasions my butter container had margarine in it - totally unacceptableThere were no board games available for us to play. Please view this as constructive criticismThe setting is amazing and very hard to beat .We had lovely stay otherwise and our game guide and viewing was excellent."

  • "Experience not to be missed"

    22 September 2014

"A wonderful lodge for a quick break-away.The facilities is of the highest standard, but what made the greatest impression on us was the staff. Most friendly, professional and helpful. We felt pampered the whole time. The food was of a very high standard and a wide variety to cater for all tastes. The chef even baked me a cake as a surprise for my birthday and the staff blessed me with a wonderful song in the boma during the evening meal. We saw the big 5 up close - very close, and met wonderful people along the way. We will definitely be back. Tau can be recommended without a doubt."

  • "Wonderful experience on my birthday!"

    30 April 2012

"We stayed two nights to celebrate my birthday and it was a great experience. Special thank you to the staff who organised a cake and performed a traditional song and dance for me. Our host Grant Botha was excellent! There was a surprise bush braai for the guests one night. We will certainly go back to Tau Lodge."

  • "Kid-friendly Game Lodge for sure!"

    21 July 2008

"We had a fantastic stay. The lodge staff were excellent with my kids and kept them well entertained and spoilt while my hubby and I could enjoy our wedding anniversary weekend with our kids, but without worrying about them. The Ranger was excellent with our son on the game drive and he got to see Elephant and lion amongst others. Our 2 1/2 year old didn't miss out as he enjoyed viewing the elephant, wilderbeest and lion drinking and bathing in the watering hole right in front of our room. What a fabulous weekend."

  • "Well run slick operation"

    11 April 2007

"The overall impression was one of a well run and slick operation. The staff were very friendly and were particularly impressed with their approach to children. We found this very comforting and I believe should be a differentiator for the lodge. Very little to fault. The food perhaps could be improved a bit - not quite five star. Ranger knowledge excellent. A suggestion is to get have bird books / mammal books in the rooms for reference for guests."
