Hornbill Lodge and Legends, Magaliesburg Hornbill Lodge offers luxury accommodation in the Riverine Forest on the banks of the Magalies River, in Magaliesburg, South Africa. An ideal location for those needing to be close to the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria or the Lost City, but away from the crowds.
The architect-designed Guest Lodge offers superb accommodation in peaceful surroundings - the luxury of the city and the best of the country.
The Magalies River flows strongly all year round attracting a large variety of birds, butterflies and river creatures. The resident Leguaan takes a sun bathe on the rocks in the river.
Activities include bird-watching, swimming, walking along, or just relaxing on the river banks. Golf driving range, horse-riding, tennis, squash, hot air ballooning all nearby.
We offer a kiddies pool and a large swimming pool, our rolling lawns meet the river front in perfect harmony. For the keen fisherman we offer catch and release facilities, most of the fish are Trophy size.
The lodge consists of six rooms and a lounge. All units are fully furnished. There are approximately 180 different bird species, and some smaller game.
We cater for leisure guests, weddings, small conferences, birthday parties and another reason you have to celebrate.
"If I could give zero stars I would. Shortly after arriving and being shown to our room, we were horrified at the state of the room. We were told that the aircon was not working as it was leaking (onto a carpet). The smell was overwhelming so we asked for a different room. We were taken to a different room where once again the room was smelling of damp. We requested a bucket with ice as there was no bar fridge in the room, and we turned the aircon on and waited for about 10 minutes. The flap on the air conditioner was held open with a stick and this one was also not working. I got up onto the couch to feel the air and it was hot.We made our way back to reception to go and complain about this and was met with an entitled gentleman who was extremely rude. As i explained the situation he was not giving me a chance to talk and eventually shouted at me that "I'm talking" I even asked him to accompany me the room to show me how the aircon works as he was very persistent that they are working and told me that in his experience, if a customer is unhappy from the get go it is better for them to just leave. so i requested my refund. I did not get a confirmation email from Safari so i phoned the lodge 2 days after i made the booking to get the reservation number. when i asked for him to assist me as he sent me the reservation numbers he abruptly told me that i didn't speak to him but it must of been his father. He reluctantly gave me an email for safarinow and when i asked him if he had an number he just replied NOI myself worked in the hospitaly industry for almost a decade. I have never in my life walked out of a hotel and i have certainly not ever been treated this way. We left the hotel at 16:30 with a storm on the way but I was never so glad to leave a place. The pool was green, the rooms smelt awful, the service was non existent and the restaurant looked more like a dungeon.I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anybody."
"I would definately recommend this establishment. It was in a lovely setting, the food was excellent and the hosts were lovely. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and it was an extra bonus that they had such lovely dogs for our child to play with.Really a lovely and charming place!"
"Amazing views and extremely friendly staff with friendly animals to interact with throughout the stay. Did have a run in with a troop of baboons though that was slightly unnerving."
"Will not stay there again. Although it is beautiful there, the camping site is situated right next to the road. You hear cars and trucks and hooters all day and night. There is also no ablution for campers. You have to use the restaurants toilets, showers are situated there."
"Overall great stay, friendly staff, clean neat & tidy. Only downside was that the ablution facilities are quite far from the camping area.Overall great experience!"
"The camping grounds are very noisy because they are situated close to the main road. The ablutions are quite far from the camp and are not always clean. The photographs on the site do not portray the place accurately. Overall, I was disappointed with the experience despite the property having a lot of potential."
"wow, we enjoyed our stay, the place is so clean, and it was definately worth our money.Everything was so well organised,.Friendly host and staff members. We definately gonna come back."
"We loved the relaxed and quiet nature. Staff we're friendly and really helpful made us feel comfortable and at home. We would definitely recommend it to our friends and family and we'll definitely come back. Thank you very much"
"The gardens are beautifully kept and the pools crystal clear. The guided hike was my favorite part, also it was my dogs first mountain hike. Its a 5km hike and takes only an hour. There is a beautiful cliff that rises out of the little dam and a running stream to fill it. I am a little worried about the pig-dog realationship but I'm sure they will get the dog under control. Overall good stay, Cobie, family and staff went out of their way to accommodate us and my dog. The tent setup assistance from Arrie was great too. The night guard that patrolled the grounds was a comforting security feature."
"Great stay surrounded by friendly people. Thanks to Cobie for an informative hike up the mountain and to Nitch for her professional service and heartwarming hospitality."
"What a lovely animal friendly place beautiful views BUT when camping your are way to far from the ablutions, which have the lowest toilets i've even seen and only 2 had working latches. The showers were not private. The road noise by the camp site was crazy, so not much sleeping.... I think if I go again it will be to stay in the rooms as they were fantastic and there is a beautiful logfire library/lounge to relax in. Truly is a stunning place."
"1.The ablution for campers must be shared with( showers and toilets):<br/>a .Day visitors<br/>b. Kitchen staff<br/>c. General staff<br/>2. On the men side only one shower working.<br/>Tiles in showers loose and broken.<br/>Lot of unwanted jiggie slimy growth under loose tiles.<br/>3. The ablution is next to the swimming pool and miles away from the camp site. It is quite a trek to get there."
"The lodge is in a good area only if it had better accommodation, eating area, lounge and no dogs roaming in the lounge and eating area. The decor seem to have been done by auntie Hettie in the 60s the chef and dining room service was a disgrace. owners need to rise to the occasionthe place is in Gauteng serving people from Sandton (like Myself) and maybe or hopefully tourists from other countries."
"We had a fantastic stay. Definitely going back."
