The Elements is a rustic house set in the Magaliesberg Mountains on an established small-holding that has been drawing power from the natural elements for around 10 years. The house is basic but ideal for an escape from the city. The house has one bedroom with a double bed and an en-suite bathroom. An additional single bed can be added on request. There is a basic kitchen area and outdoor seating with views for miles.
Sunshine rules the energy on this exclusive retreat, it pumps the borehole water, lights the light bulbs and cools the fridges. When the sun is resting and the clouds roll in, the wind turbine takes over her easy load and the same efficiency is achieved. The beautiful power of our natural elements are your hosts, so come and absorb their energy. Relax, take a walk in the mountains or cycle many of the spectacular bike trail in this pristine environment.
The beautiful surroundings of the house are perfect for guests who want to get lost in nature. The Magaliesberg Mountains are rich with hiking trails, gullies and kloofs and are a playground for hikers, rock climbers and abseilers.
"We enjoyed ourselves even though it rained for 2 straight days. The site must be updated with recent pictures as it was different to the site. Well equipped in the kitchen, gas stove, indoor fireplace +++ especially when we couldnt take our walks due to the rain. The outdoor braai place ++. Only not so great was the dog barking a lot at times, other peoples voices or music echoing which would disturb the peacefulness of the bush, and they are busy building on the property which also disturbed peace; wooden bed stand was very cranky with every movement, but overall we enjoyed ourselves and where happy with our stay, can see the sunrise from the bedroom window. If you are not okay with bush bugs, mud when its rainy, no microwave, this place is not for you."
"Horrible! Stay away. 1 star...should be 0."
"Booked for 4 nights - Stayed 1 - slept 0<br/>Cottage infected with wood lice. The lice (numerous species appeared from the wood work) at about 11 pm and started to hunt.<br/>Fortunately I am a relative expert on wood lice. My first action was to strip naked so that I could feel any landing on my body. They were every where; living room, bedroom and bathroom. There is a fly swat in the cottage which proved to be very effective. I killed a large number and left some for the owner next to the bed, on the kitchen work surface and the bathroom (walls and ceiling). I brought some specimens home and took numerous photographs. The next morning when I left the owner/manager was not around and I told the attendant what I haf left behind.<br/>There is only one naturalt enemy for the wood louse and that is ants. They had an absolute feast on the bigger and juicier specimens.<br/>Will not be back and do not even want a refund for the payment I made."
"The place is great, but hard to find in the dark,<div><br /></div><div>'Turn right at the gum tree' is not useful when, a) there are many gum trees and b) the gum tree is not on the edge of the road.</div>"
"we had a fantastic stay.<div>They decor and design is truly unique and artistic.</div><div><br /></div><div>It's exactly what we were looking for!</div><div><br /></div><div>Our only comment would be that the second house is back to back with your neighbors, so it you can literally hear the entire conversations and music.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you don't mind sharing a space, then it's recommended.</div>"
"The Elements delivered as promised - big windows, pastoral and mountainous views, horses and cows grazing... Loved the big shower and wish we had the time to use the outdoor pizza oven. Our cat hid away from the free-roaming chickens. Comfy bed, fresh flowers from the garden on arrival. Great place to veg out and to use as a central base for Magalies excursions. Ask host Paul about his innovative and sustainable building methods."
"Great couple nights away from Joburg. Rustic and basic yet clean and tidy. And our pup had a great time exploring."
"What an amazing place. Off the grid. Quiet. Has a pizza oven :) We had an extremely relaxing stay at The Elements. Thank you very much. Highly recommended."
"We had a lovely relaxing 4 days, just enjoying the quiet and recharging."
"Life off the grid. Interesting to meet Paul and to understand how he has lived off solar and wind power for 12 years, and to experience it all first hand. A very rustic, bachelor experience (i.e. - bare necessities), lovely setting (apart from the workshop store room next door) and good to be away from Jo'Burg. If you like life's little luxuries, this would not be for you, but if you want to get a little closer to living off the land, go for it!"
"We had a fantastic stay at The Elements. Its perfect for guests who would like to break away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Taking you back to your roots with only solar heating and a fire to keep you warm, a sunset as your television, perfect nature to get lost in, and the quiet noise of birds and jackals in the evening. Do not expect luxury, but only a place to find yourself again."
"Had a blast, my wife was taken aback at first by the lack of TV and a microwave. By Sunday she admired the place for a lack of TV and its outdoor wood-oven. The views are picturesque, the surrounds serene. Perfect break from the persistent buzz of the city. All you need is a car with good ground clearance and a well planned grocery back."
"A lovely scenic place with beautiful walks and views, offering an easy introduction to off-the-grid living. Unfortunately its serene potential and privacy was affected by close proximity to the main house and the noisy activities of the adjacent workshop."
"We arrived at around 18:00 after a long week and braving the traffic looking forward to relaxing only to find that the place was not ready due to some sort of misunderstanding with the staff. We had to hang around in our car until about 18:45 before the place was ready. Needed to call again for the staff to connect the electricity. In the rush the place was also not cleaned properly. Place was cosy with a nice view, but not that well equipped e.g. no wine glasses."
"We love the whole idea of 'simply sustainable' and were happy to meet Paul, he's an incredibly knowledgeable guy so learnt a lot that we didn't know. We enjoyed the view and the quiet. It was clean with plenty of hot water. There was also plenty of rooibos, coffee and sugar."
"The place is quiet and beautiful and definitely worth a visit. Particularly for a weekend stay or if you want to be couped up in winter. Very Rustic and peaceful."
"We had an awesome time at the Elements. It was nice to break away from the city life and just be in the veld. Our dogs also enjoyed it extremely much."
"We enjoyed our stay at The Elements, we had a lot of privacy which is what we were looking for. The place could use a bit of renovation though."
