Medike Mountain Reserve

Medike is a mountain sanctuary deep in the Soutpansberg. The Sand River or Mongesi with its impressive gorge and quartzite cliffs forms an outstanding feature of this natural Heritage Site.

Here the wildlife enthusiast is rewarded spectacular vistas, star filled nights, beautiful flora, animal and birdlife.

Marked hiking trails meander through rugged gorges, forested kloofs and mountain streams to waterfalls, spectacular rock formations and a mysterious Bushman shelter with ancient rock art.

Guests can stay in Murango cottage; build against two enormous boulders, or in the pioneer cottage, Dzhiawolala, the Venda name given to the old trading post dating from the early nineteen thirties. Masianoke log cottage has a thatched deck with a beautiful 360 view on the surrounding mountains.

Please note there is no electricity and the cottages have gas fridges and stoves and paraffin lamps.

"We spent 4 nights in Medike's log cabin - 2 adults and 2 kids aged 6 and 9. The cabin is well equipped for a rustic family bush break-away. The owners Hannes and Marietjie are friendlyand attentive and clearly take great pride in their establishment. They allowed the kids to swim in the cement dam in front of their house and was always ready to giveadvice onactivities and share stories on the area. The view on the SoutpansbergMountains are wonderful and there are interesting hikes into the mountains and along the Sand River Gorge."

"We really enjoyed our stay at Medike Mountain Reserve. Although the drive was difficult it was well worth the climb up into the mountain. Our self serve cabin was lovely and had everything we needed including a beautiful star filled sky in the evening. Our host was welcoming and did everything to make sure we had anything we needed. We encourage you to stay at Medike if you are looking for a little slice of heaven."

"Now that is a place i will never forget. It brings one back to earth, it was awesome, the stillness, the views, animals we saw. My husband and I took the Boabab trail and that was a great adventure. Not a place for small children but if you want to get your teenager away from the tv or mixit and spend time with mom and dad now that is the place to do it. Want to rekindle your relationship with your loved ones or bond or fix your marriage Medike is the place to do it. The owners of the place were awesome, I have never seen such a fit man before and that week i saw a man who never let one feel out of place or left you stranded , he made sure we were comfortable and settled in. I will for sure be back to take another week there this year."
