On the fringe of the Grand Karoo, the Lord Milner Hotel, the last authentic vestige of Victoriana, sits in all its past glory as a must stop on the N1 national highway linking Cape Town to Johannesburg and the northern part of South Africa.
The Lord Milner's 58 guest rooms have been well maintained over the years and a high standard of service is upheld. The Royal Lounge is open for guests; enjoy a dinner, liqueur or coffee in the historical ambience.
The courteous staff, the clean crisp air and the warmth of the atmosphere surrounding the hotel makes for a relaxing and revitalizing stay. A pond, fountains, river bed and beautiful lush gardens can be seen around the hotel and guest rooms. The town itself is full of historical features and interesting things to do, such as museum tours and bus trips on the old London bus.
Along with the blood-red sunsets, remarkable fauna and flora and its age-old traditions, Matjiesfontein and the Lord Milner Hotel lends itself to the ultimate tranquil escape.
"Loved the atmosphere"
"The hotel is one of a kind- great service, nice staff and clean rooms. I would highly recommend staying over to experience this quirky town."
"Everything perfect! Reception (Stephanie) fantastic. And the tour guide and pianist, Johny, is exceptional. We stayed in the honeymoon suite, a must."
"Loved everything. Staff very friendly."
"Excellent meal, clean comfortable rooms"
"Our stay at the hotel was a pleasant surprise! It was very good value for money, the food was fantastic and the staff are very friendly and professional and make you feel truly special. We will definitely stay there again."
"We had a wonderful stay at the Lord Milner Hotel. The staff were fantastic. We had great fun on the bus trip, the food was delicious and even though it was cold we loved the walk around the grounds."
"Always enjoy coming to this historic place"
"Loved the Victorian era charm. The food was supurb.Would like to see a dress code enforced for dinner. No T shirts shorts and slops"
"A lovely town, with a long history and great Karoo hospitality. A must stop and well worth sleeping over in the Lord Milner Hotel or one of the annexes. They have lovely gardens with a beautiful eco-pool. Dinner was outstanding! We will definitely stay over again."
"We love the location. It felt like stepping into history. The staff are friendly and provide excellent services (especially Linda and Maria). The room is comfy and warm. We'll definitely be back for more."
"It felt like Lord Milner would come walking down the stairs any minute. Greeting his friendly staff and join his guest for a drink. Food was out of this world!!!! Rooms comfortable, clean!! What a pleasant stay!!!"
"John, the hotel guide made it very special"
"The whole experience was amazing. It took us back in time. The Hotel is wonderful, food excellent and very friendly staff."
"Everything was great. Food. Entertainment (Old London bus tour). Linen. Atmosphere. Cleanliness. Staff. Everything! Loved it."
"This place has so much character and should be a "compulsory" stop for anyone travelling on the N1."
"Whilst the room was on the small side it was generally clean although the shutters had not been dusted in ages. The real problem was however the water quality. Although mentioned in the in-room directory (too late anyway), it was was really aweful - black and foul-smelling. It is a pity that I am unable to attach or paste the picture I took of the disgusting water in the basin in the room"
"We loved the authentic style in every single detail. The guide of the bus tour was great. The food was not so excellent, the portions rather small and a bit off phantasy. The pool is kilometers away..."
"We stayed in the motel section. The photos on the web were misleading, the room was barely big enough for a cupboard, the water in the taps was dark grey, the bathroom was not quite big enough for 1. The meals were very good. The bus tour was fun, but the bus is in dire need of renovation. The cars in the transport museum are sadly neglected. Overall the town and hotel gave the impression that management does not care. A gem for tourism is being wasted - what a pity"
"We stayed in the beautiful green room, it was fantastic. Food, facilities and vibe, just wonderful. Great taking a walk back in time."
"One night stop over on way to Cape Town.<br/>Lovely room - no aircon.<br/>10 minute bus trip most entertaining.<br/>Diner time very busy - not enough waiters and one trainee waitress still very much in training - starter ordered with main meal - starter delivered on time - main meal was long overdue - during the wait for our main meal the trainee delivered desert twice to our table - eventually our main meal was delivered but my wife's meal was wrong - after our meal we sat outside - the peaceful evening was shattered by the loud music coming from the nearby location - can't say that we would be in a hurry to book in again."
"Well worth the visit a lot of history. Neat rooms and very friendly staff. It's an experience. The pool is a small way from the hotel but is a welcome relief on a hot day."
"We stayed over at the hotel for one night. Total disappointment! I booked a luxury room and the reservation confirmation stated a luxury room with balcony. When we arrived, the temperature was at 33 degrees. We were given a room at the back of the hotel. No balcony, in stead we had the view of a tin roof with bird guano through a very dirty window. The room had no aircon or fan and was very stuffy. The curtains and upholstery knew better days. The place smelled like cigarette smoke. The bathroom was down with some 8 steep stairs that was quite a challenge in the middle of the night. The bath was badly stained and I couldn't get myself to sit in it. Rather took a shower. The lady at reception asuured me that it was one of their luxury rooms. I am scared to think what their standard rooms look like... Really not worth the money! The food was very good!"
"Our Matjiesfontein experience was delightful. From the singalong in the pub with Johnny through the delicious dinner and our comfortable riverside mews room to an excellent breakfast. Staff all so friendly and efficient. We loved it."
"Matjiesfontein has been on my bucket list for many years. This visit was no disappointment. Friendly staff, pretty, more than adequate rooms. Fabulous breakfast, and service. The town is small, but packed with personality. Meet Johnny, character of note...."
"<p>Old-world charm. We felt welcome from the moment we stepped inside the hotel. Food was first class.</p>"
"I stayed at the Motel section and although I did not expect luxury, I did anticipate friendliness and hospitality from staff and coffee shop/restaurant. However, I was greeted with hostility. Standing in front of the counter, waiting to be seated...with staff passing by and not even offering to serve me or give me as much as a hallo! My room was okay, the patio had no seats although the ones next to me did! The shower was clean but needs maintenance as side doors seem to peel off. Overpriced and commercialised in my opinion and I am an experienced traveller...having stayed in hostels and motels in South Africa as well as abroad. So disappointed."
"Accomodation par excellence in all aspects Will definitely return<br />"
"<p>I can say that this was a time of my life. All staff members very friendly, help full. I had a super time at this Hotel. I had peace and calm at Matjiesfontein. I willvisit very soon again. Jonny was the man of the hour. I think if any one needs peace and calm from the city and needs a brake please visit Matjiesfontein. I had a time of my life. Food was super. Rooms veryclean. Lots to see, lots to learn about that small town with the warm hart. </p><p></p><p>Thank you</p><p></p><p>Michael Lourens</p>"
"Lovely, lovely,lovely....<div><br /></div><div>Stunning experience, lovely food and atmosphere.</div><div>I go back at least once a year...</div>"
"Although the Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein is a must, I was disappointed with the fact that the rooms I had booked turned out not to be what I was allocated when I did my booking throuhg SafariNow. I book and was allocated Garden Mews rooms, but was put in the Riverbank Rooms. The Riverbank rooms although comfortable where not anywhere near the garden and overlooked the dry river bed. I was extremely disappointed with the location of our rooms and would advise that confirmation by phone is made when booking via the internet."
"We spent a wonderful night at Matjiesfontein's Lord Milner Hotel. The kids had a swim in the huge pool after a long road trip. Our dinner was five star! Everyone enjoyed the ravioli. Main courses were delicious and the Eaton mess desert was yummy! I haven't slept so well in years as the beautiful crisp white sheets and comfy bed were perfect. Breakfast was excellent. Of course we can't forget our fun red bus trip and sing around the piano in the bar. What a lovely memorable stay!"
"What a wonderful time we had. The smallest place we visited but the most fun. Stunning old hotel with fine dining. Beautiful room. Had a bus tour in a double decker bus. Took us 6 minutes to drive around then a sing song in the pub. Would recommend a one night stopover."
"Very pleasant and relaxing couple of days with excellent evening meals - top class food. Very interesting museums in the town and a chance to look around the Blue Train when it pulled into the station. Staff very friendly and helpful and great to meet the manager Johan, London bus trip was very amusing, hosted by John who is a real character!"
"We were not able to stay at Lord Milner on the day we had booked as only the day before we were due there my husband was diagnosed with cancer. I phoned them to tell them to let our room to anyone else who perhaps wished to stay there (and sent them copies of doctors' letters etc)<div>They then offered us our money back - less a small admin fee - OR we could change our date and stay there later.<div>This was totally unexpected and extremely kind and I think they should be supported for this.</div><div>I did stay there about 20 odd years ago and loved it - that's why we wanted to go back now.</div></div><div>Thank you to management and staff- MUCH APPRECIATED</div>"

"Wife and I have just enjoyed a night at the Lord Milner - what an experience!! The town and Hotel are steeped in history and beautifully presented. The Hotel staff were attentive and friendly, the food was delicious and we were charmed by the atmosphere. A lovely stay, thank you!"
"As returning customers we enjoyed our stay again. <br />The restaurant had a superb meal, great chef and excellent staff.<br />Will be back soon<br />"
"Service, staff, food, room - everything was absolutely fantastic. What apleasure to stay at Lord Milner after a day's driving from Gauteng!"
"The Lord Milner was everything we had expected: an experience in 19th Century opulence. The staff were courteous and very helpful. The rooms were large and comfortable. The meals were excellent. The whole village environment was delightful and relaxing to the soul, Most especially the gardens proved to be something like a paradise on earth. We should have stayed for three nights rather than two! Thanks to all the staff who made our stay so wonderful."
"We enjoyed our stay. The staff is friendly."
"We enjoyed our stay, however I the would like to point out some things where you could improve without imposing large costs. 1. The pool area needs upgrading, perhaps some sun beds and flowers. 2. The music in the dining room was not appropriate for the atmosphere, something without words, it is not a sing along. 3. It would have been nice if we could have made a cup of coffee in one of the lounges after dinner. It only needs a water kettle and some cups and of course coffee. For the ladies a hair drier and body lotion should also be provided. 4. The chairs provided outside had no cushions."
"Matjiesfontein is well worth a visit and we had a very comfortable night at The Lord Milner Hotel. Everything is steeped in history, it was like stepping back in time whilst still discreetly enjoying modern luxuries. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in the dining room and the breakfast spread was sumptuous. We will definitely be back."
"A great place to stay, just a challenge to use the shower with the door opening inwards. Food was excellent and fast, no waiting at all!"
"Our stay at the Lord Milner was a short one but we really enjoyed our stay, the dining room was too hot over the dinner period and the aircon didn't make much of a difference, but the staff were great and really friendly."
"The stay was excellent!! We enjoyed it. Dit was kos vir die siel. Sal definitief in die toekoms weer daar oorslaap. Baie dankie vir u puik organisasie."
"Fairly reasonably priced but R110 for 2 chops is over the top in my opinion. My steak at R115 was OK though. For a 3 star establishment I should not have to ask for a menu, ask for a steak knife, ask for the way I want my steak prepared. Ask for another steak knife for the chops. Training is required. The Lord Milner is beautiful even though we could not stay there due to renovations we were kindly given a tour by one of the owners. The chap that does the bus tour should stick to singing and playing the piano. The bus is filthy and run down, his narrative was cringe-worthy and weird. His singing and piano playing was however very entertaining."
"We enjoyed the 'old world' charm of the Lord Milner with its beautiful gardens. The staff was friendly, the rooms clean and neat, and the dinner tasty. Truly a gem no one should pass by en route on the N1."
"Great. Fun trip by bus. Entertainment at pub very relaxing. Afrikaanse liedjies so lekker om saam te sing. Room 19 - relaxing and looked great. Meals very pleasing and staff very friendly and helpful. Also enjoyed the museums."
"Beautiful place with antic suite, good food, perhaps a little lack of warmth in beginning of spring. The main street is a museum.Lots of things to see."
"We had a lovely stay at the Lord Milner Garden Mews. Accommodation was great. So was the food. Great breakfast. My friend though wished there was more of a variety for vegetarians at the breakfast (hot meal side) table. Otherwise a great stay!Thank you once again."
"Enjoyed the overnight stay. Accommodation very good and comfortable. Food excellent. Will visit again."
"From Johny's witty guided bus tour, through a super dinner and a jolly evening in the Lairds Arms pub to the ducks in the pond below our patio deck waking us for a scrumptious breakfast, this was an experience that we will surely want to repeat. Highly recommended!!"
"A grand old building providing a comfortable bed, lots of hot water and tasty food. All one wants for an overnight stop-over. We arrived early enough to visit the extremely interesting museum in the station buildings - what a marvelous collection."
"Ein Besuch im Lord Milner Hotel ist komplett mit Ãœbernachtung, Dinner und Baraufenthalt sowie Besuch der Museen eine wunderbare Zeitreise."
"An excellent experience in history. We could feel the presence of history. No hotel welcomes you like Lord Milner. Well done Johnny."
"Had a good stay at the hotel. We were very surprised and thankfull to have our own pool. Great food and great service. Loved the pub!"
"Still legendary lamb chops! Perhaps not as I remember it from the 80s and 90s and in need of some TLC. A spa would truly make it a haven for weary travellers from up north. Imagine neck and shoulder massage for folks who've been in the car all day ?"
"We stayed in the Garden Mews, which were too small for comfort and not well furnished.Surroundings nice, and reception friendly and efficient."
"If you want memory making experience book into the Lord Milner Hotel. It is like stepping back in history. The local tour guide / entertainer is worth his weight in gold. The food is excellent and the staff friendly, helpful and professional. Accommodation in a hotel dating back to 1800's is memory making."
"Dit is 'n pragtige gebou met die ou wêreldse atmosfeer. Ongelukkig het verwaarlosing ingetree en is alles vuil en stowwerig en lyk onversorg. Die meubels is ietwat karig en benodig dringende versorging. Ons kamer was goed, hoewel die gordyne ens. afgeleef voorkom en alles stowwerig is. Die kos was van hoogstaande gehalte en die personeel vriendelik."
"Staff helpful. Whilst checking in, we heard the bugle call for the 6pm bus ride and was allowed to finish checking in later. I stayed in the garden mews, though not historic they still seemed old-fashioned with the cute stable-type doors. Rooms clean and modern. The restaurant was indeed very old-fashioned. The food was fairly traditional but tasty; the lamb chops I had were absolutely delicious. Breakfast was very nice too. Make sure you go on the bus ride, and then go to the beautiful old pub where John will continue to entertain you. The Matjiesfontein air is as clean and crisp as they say!"
"Historic and beautiful. With John Theunissen, the best guide ever."
"Very nice and clean little place. Will recommend. People were friendly. Could be better in summer."
"We enjoyed our overnight stay at the Lord Milner Hotel. Loved the interior, particularly the entrance and staircase. The reception was friendly and the entertainer was quite a character. We enjoyed a drink in the bar and taking in the old colonial type place and talk and piano playing. The food was pleasant, country hotel type."
"It was absolutely awesome. The staff, service, accommodation, food and experience was fantastic. Thank you to Judy, Cindy, Ingrid, Marco, Ben and everyone behind the scenes. Keep up the excellent work. We hope to see you again real soon."
"What a wonderful place. A real step back in time. Your museum was fascinating. A real gem. My only suggestion would be a more child friendly menu. Even if it only offered a hamburger or hotdog. We really enjoyed our time there."
"We enjoyed our time and met some great staff who enjoy working there!"
"Nice old hotel full of history. If time is not important and you can break your journey over three days from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Matjiesfontein is great stopover."
"Een van die mooiste plekke waar ons nog gebly het. One of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed at."
