The AA Highly Recommended Hillston ironstone cottage was built in the late 1800s. Previous generations have used the cottage to house managers and governesses and 60 years ago it was even used as a school, which all the neighboring farms children attended.
The cottage has three bedrooms, a bathroom with a bath and a shower and a separate toilet. All six beds have woolen duvets, electric blankets and luxurious bath sheets. There is an open-plan kitchen, a dining room and a family lounge with underfloor heating. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering with a stove, a microwave, a kettle, a toaster, an iron and a breakfast counter. If required, meals can also be provided by our on-site Cordon Bleu Chef. This includes breakfast, brunch, lunch, high tea, dinner or a picnic basket.
Relax on the front veranda and watch the sunset with the guinea fowl and hadeda signaling the end of the day, or have breakfast on the wooden combo set. Enjoy a braai in our Boer War Blockhouse lapa or outside in the garden; the first bag of wood is provided for. The garden has a pathway which leads down to an irrigation dam with a jetty and a paddle boat. Please note children must be supervised. Ample parking is available and a laundry service is available on request.
There is a beautician as well as many activities to enjoy on site, including hiking, birdwatching, stargazing, spotting fossils and bushmen etchings, cooking classes, swimming, cycling, motor biking trails, tennis, bowls and horse riding.
"We had a wonderful stay at Hillston Farm Cottage. The thick stone walls and warm bed linen and blankets kept out the cold and made for snug, cosy, Winter nights. We had a picturesque walk up a nearby kopje to appreciate the vast landscape views, even spotting some Mountain Reedbuck and a porcupine. Here you can enjoy strolls around the farm, stopping to investigate the historical shearing shed and other sights. We even had a personal tour of the Rabbit Hole (conference venue). Don't miss out on the chance to braai in the historical Boer War Blockhouse, which has been tastefully converted into a lapa."
"Love the history surrounding Hillston farm cottage and the memories for our family."
"This is a great place to get off the main routes, to take an interest in the local history and enjoy the Karoo environment in a comfortable and well-appointed place. There is a glorious pool for the hot traveller and a lovely stoep on which to chill out."
"Much attention was given to the tiniest details. the house is so full of love, and it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into furnishing and decorating it. Every need of the traveller was thought of and taken care of. We were made to feel most welcome. A paradise for the lover of solitary places!"
"We had a really wonderful time at Hillston and enjoyed the quiet time in the beautiful surrounds. The house was so original and the fact that there was no electricity added to the atmosphere. The stars at night were breathtaking. Will definitely return again."
"We had a lovely stop over with our 4 kids at Hillston! Riana was very a friendly and provided a lovely Karoo braai for us! Really great stay!"
