Sommersby Guest House

Sommersby is a charming Edwardian house, lovingly converted into a bed and breakfast in 1995. Many of the original features remain; wooden floors, high ceilings and a fireplace, which helps to create a home from home atmosphere.

Sommersby is 'sandwiched' between Florida and Windermere Roads, which provide a whole host of popular bars, restaurants and shops, literally only a short walk away. Sommersby Guest House is a relaxed place to stay with the action you want on your doorstep.

Breakfast is included in the price and can be continental, health or full English - whichever you prefer. Breakfast can be served either in the breakfast room or on the patio if you wish and if the weather permits.

The bed and breakfast is fully walled and has electric fencing along the boundary. Secure off-street parking is provided. Each guest is given a remote with full access to the bed and breakfast and can come and go as they please.

Airport transfers can be arranged if details are provided at the time of booking. An additional fee will be charged for this service. We are approximately 30 minutes from the airport. Laundry services are available and can usually be done on the same day if given enough notice. Again, an additional charge would apply for this service. Alternatively, a launderette is located in the shopping centre.

We are ideally situated in the Morningside area, directly opposite the Windermere Shopping Centre which has an Internet caf, and shops such as Checkers, Everfresh, Clicks and also ABSA, Standard Bank and Nedbank branches. There is also a foreign exchange agent. The Musgrave Shopping Centre and Durban CBD are only five minutes away.

Durban Country Club, Durban Royal Golf Club, Beachwood Golf Club and Windsor Golf Club are all within a couple of minutes drive. We are within two kilometers of Moses Mahbida Soccer Stadium, Kingsmead Cricket Ground and Kings Park Rugby Ground. Durban's main beaches are less than two kilometers away, as is Suncoast Casino and Greyville Racecourse.

  • "Didn't travel much because it's closer to most attractions"

    20 December 2019

"It's a street across a shopping centre. 2.2km from the beach, less than 2km from Moses Mabida stadium, less than 5km from uShaka Marine. The breakfast is great and the staff friendly."

  • "room for improvement"

    19 September 2016

"I loved the area where the guesthouse is situated . Very central to Florida road with so many restaurants etc. However I feel the guesthouse could do with a few improvements which could add to the appeal of staying a second time. <br/><br/>Establishment Response:<br/><br/>Hi Ismet. We thank you for your business and take heed of your comments.Kind regards, Chris."

  • "will not be back unless desperate"

    07 April 2015

"At first we were welcomed by chris and everything was good. At first glance it seems lovely but upon closer inspection its not actually 3 star.<div>Firstly parking for only 6 cars and that too very tightly spaced is never mentioned until you get there. My dad had to park in the middle as he had no where to park at all even though we were told that we would. On sunday night when we returned we had to call chris to ask a guest to move his vehicle from the middle even though there was a parking on the side and he chose to inconvenience us and park like shit, my father was apparently to blame when he was not in the way. Chris needs to stop complaining that guests are to blame for the parking situation when it is his guesthouse.own it. We pay you for a service.it wasnt free. The floors were dirty all the time even they were mopped? And there were tiny worms under the shower door. So as much as i initialy liked the quaintness of this b&amp;b chris has changed my mind.</div>"

  • "Sommersby"

    01 July 2013

"We really enjoyed our stay, we were welcomed by Chris and felt right at home. The breakfast was great and the staff friendly. Sommersby is in walking distance of restaurants and shops which is a great advantage. We would definitely stay there again."

  • "Quaint and comfortable"

    08 December 2012

"Overall my stay was pleasant. My room was cleaned regularly and the staff were nice. The owner could be hard to find sometimes however. The location near Windermere shopping centre and Florida Rd was very convenient."

  • "Not the best"

    14 September 2012

"I am sorry to say but we were not very impressed with Sommersby House. The room was small, and had cobwebs. The bathroom consisted of a shower, which was superb, and a toilet and a basin in a very small alcove in the room. The breakfast was not great and apart from being greeted when we arrived by the landlord, we did not see him again. So all in all, it was not the best experience we have had at a B and B and we won't be going back."
