Tekweni Backpackers

Tekweni is located in the centre of Durban's hippest entertainment area with all the pubs, clubs, restaurants and markets right on the doorstep. It comprises three neighbouring houses, the oldest and main house built in 1896. The hostel was established in 1992, making it one of the first five hostels in the country and the longest established in Durban.

We are conveniently located close to everything, just 2 km from the beach and town. The various types of accommodation ramble across the three properties, with guests having the choice of staying right in the middle of the action or in one of our quieter, more remote rooms away from the hustle and bustle. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated, all with ceiling fans.

We built our reputation through our festive atmosphere and fun-loving approach. You can party on at our poolside sports bar, catch some rays, groove to the tunes, or kick some butt around our pool table. We also have barbecues every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday - we provide the salad and rolls and light the fire. A great way to meet other backpackers, you bring your own meat or whatever and cook and socialize together with our multi-national clientele.

Our fully equipped stainless steel kitchen is complete with all you need to whip up a great meal. Our numerous ablutions have been renovated to cater for the volumes and the needs of the backpacker. We have unlimited safe parking on the premises and also offer 24-hour security as well as CCTV cameras.

We have excellent fast Internet access with an ADSL connection and our satellite provides all the current sports in our poolside sports bar, as well as all the current movies and TV programmes in our lounge. The indoor-outdoor feel is complete with numerous seating areas giving you the choice of the ambience you desire at the time.

"We were packed in a room with other 3 ladies.<br/>There was no privacy at all.<br/><br/>Establishments response:<br/><br/><br/>It is quite obvious you are not familiar with backpackers accommodation. We are very clear that we are a backpackers in all of our marketing. You booked dormitory accommodation sharing with others and we were busy. No there isnt a lot of privacy in a dormitory sharing generally in any backpackers. If you want privacy you need to pay more and book a private room. It is unfair a review like this is permitted as we provided what we advertised all along.<br/>"

"Fairly cheap and straightforward backpackers, no frills. The regular braai is a fun event, a great one to put on, enjoyed that. Dorm rooms are bare and very surprised to find that they lack power sockets. Electricity is one of the 2 things a backpacker needs! Showers good. Staff did not seem hugely informed about local events and more interested in the bar."

"Very good service; the staff, including the night one, was more than helpful. I was put in the house next door in a flat with 2 bedrooms, the other bedroom wasn't taken. So I had a kitchen, bathroom and sitting room to myself. And a glorious view towards the sea."
