Buckingham Place Guest House

Buckingham Place Guest House has eight en-suite rooms, all with a fridge, microwave, tea tray and a TV with M-Net. There are two family self-catering units, each with a king size bed and two single beds, plus a kitchenette and en-suite bathroom. There is also a loft apartment with two bedrooms, a large full bathroom, open-plan lounge and kitchen as well as a private balcony. In addition, we also have a three bedroom house with a kitchen, patio, lounge, conference room seating up to 30 delegates, braai area and safe parking.

We are 1 km from the Nelson Mandela Bay soccer stadium and we have a tranquil garden to relax in. It is a convenient area for business or leisure and close to the Greenacres shopping centre and sports centres. It is in a quiet road close to Cape and Mount Road and a mere 10 minute drive to the beachfront and 40 minutes from the Addo Elephant Park.

The main guest house was built in 1907 and is of historical interest. It belonged to a lady by the name of Ray Schauder who happened to be a doctor. She turned it into a home for unmarried mothers in the 1960s. Dr. Schauder died after a melanoma was left untreated. She was still relatively young. The property was declared a memorial home for Dr. Ray Schauder, whose father was the mayor of Port Elizabeth in 1942. Adolf Schauder has had a location named after him because of the good work and help he gave people in Schauderville in the 40s and onwards. The property then became part of the Salvation Army, who then sold it to the present owners in 1998. The home was renovated and it has the original oregan pine features, high ceilings and large rooms within a tranquil garden.

  • "Worst accommodation ever!"

    14 May 2018

"As fairly seasoned travellers, we have stayed in our share of various accommodations. What this guest house offers is the worst we have ever experienced. The rooms are filthy, from the light switches, the microwave, dust everywhere. The bedding was not changed since the previous guest slept there, no towels in the rooms. The clean bedding was stained and not ironed. The duvet was old and lumpy, leaving bare blocks with no filling. This place is neglected, dirty and just a plain rip off. NEVER will they see us again."
