Amber Lagoon is a backpackers dream buried in the heart of the Klein Karoo, bordered by the Swartberg Mountains and the Gamka Nature Reserve.
Surrounded by ostrich farms, Amber Lagoon is a green oasis abundant in indigenous and foreign plants, trees and birds. It is here, where backpackers can truly relax and enjoy the real beauty of South African nature.
Surrounded by vast open space and beautiful views, relax in a malaria-free and especially safe environment, as well as enjoying freshly home-cooked meals in our open-air restaurant.
Relax at our big swimming pool and jump in when the African sun is beating down. Head out for an ostrich egg search with the farmers 4x4 and learn about ostriches and real ostrich farming. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Swartberg Mountains over the pass or go visit the Cango Caves, where there are vast drip-stone caverns and beautiful formations created by nature.
Visit the reserve located in the Gamka Mountains, which is the home to the endangered mountain zebra, an unusual protea, Khoisan rock art and marine fossils. Only 25 km from Amber Lagoon, lays the little village of Calitzdorp, famous for its wine and especially its port.
"Something different...an old-fashioned style camping area with beautiful sunsets , fabulous food to order from owner's kitchen . The Host is very helpful and friendly...ad a fair price and you got a winner... definitely a place to visit again"
"Amber Lagoon in middle of a beautiful landscape was one of our highlights on our trip through South Africa! Everything made with such ja love and passion..we would definitively come back!"
"The vegetation creating a beautiful garden"
"Ablutions is about 500m from camp site. No electricity. The photo's is maybe just after they build the place, cause it doesn't look the same. It is just horrible. We camp a lot and this place is just the horrible place we you could stay. Even in Botswana the camping places is better than this. We arrived at the camp place have a look around and then left. It is not what it looks like on the pictures or on the web page. It is disgusting. I would never recommend anybody to this place. No place to make coffee or tea you must buy it from them, and everything is so durty. I really hope they take the money that I have waisted to make this place better with better facilities. Waist of money."
"we enjoyed our stay at Amber Lagoon very much. Watching the sun set on top of the hill is worth seeing. The camp sites are very well set up and the pool area made us forget about the karoo heat. Friendly staff who was always helpful gave the feeling of being at home!"
"We had such a fun stay at Amber Lagoon. This was a unique experience for us during our 10 days journey along the garden route. Usually we stayed in guest houses, but this gave us a more outdoor experience. The sunset and star-filled skies were amazing. The owner was so helpful, welcoming and thoughtful. We quality of the food available was excellent, and the swimming pool the biggest we'd enjoyed. This is great for outdoor lovers and those who like quirky places!"
"Well we can I start with all the bad things??? Let me not start!!!"
