Oyster Bay Beach Lodge

Oyster Bay Beach Lodge was constructed in 2004 from local pine wood and thatch to blend into the natural surroundings. The lodge is within casting distance from the ocean and has fantastic sea views from all the rooms, not to mention the fact it's only a short walk from a 6 km unspoilt golden beach.

The accommodation consists of four luxury double rooms, each with full en-suite bathrooms and stunning views of the ocean. Two units also feature a lovely private balcony. Each unit can sleep up to four guests in a queen-size or twin beds, complemented with a sleeper coach for an extra two. Room amenities include tea and coffee-making facilities, fans, heaters, bar fridges, DStv, and Wi-Fi Internet access.

The large dining room serves home-made dinners, with seafood as a speciality, and breakfast options include English, health, or fisherman's brunch. The Bar-nic-les Pub is a small, intimate, fully licensed public bar that serves ice-cold drinks and light meals to the thirsty and hungry, and boasts spectacular sea views - dolphins and whales are commonly spotted from the deck. The bar is equipped with a large LCD TV screen for special sporting events, and also features an outside barbecue area for outdoor catering, weather permitting.

Oyster Bay is well-known as an anglers paradise and offers numerous nature walks along the beach or rocks. Bird watching can be very rewarding, and shore birds as well as forest-dwelling birds can be spotted. In the winter months, Southern Right whales are often spotted very close to shore, and Brydes or Mink whales are often spotted deeper out at sea. Killer and Humpback whales have also been spotted from the lodge. Dolphins are often seen playing in the waves directly in front of the lodge, along with the Cape clawless otters, Cape fur seals, and numerous shark species.

Kite surfing has become very popular at Oyster Bay due to the strong east and east winds blowing across the bay, while the large sand dunes have become popular with sand boarders. Day drives to Addo Elephant Park and the surrounding private game farms can be arranged, and the Brakkeduine 4x4 trail is only 12 km from the lodge.

  • "Great View, Food and Host but tired digs"

    02 May 2014

"The Beach Lodge is situated in a great location with stunning views. The host, Nick, was very helpful and friendly and the food for dinner and breakfast was great as my kids were happy to eat all. The reason for a poorer rating is that the accommodation is very old, dated and tired and seems close to falling apart. The DSTV in the rooms did not work and the shower was a little ropey too. Blankets for the cold loft family room were not easily forthcoming. OK but not as great as we had hoped for."

  • "Terrible experience"

    20 October 2012

"We were not warned about the treacherous mud roads from Palmietvlei to Oyster Bay and we slid from side to side, almost having a few accidents. The directions from CT say take the Palmietvlei exit and follow the road to Oyster Bay, which is what we did. I suggest that everyone should be told to first go to Humansdorp and take the road from there back to Oyster Bay. When we arrived at about 2:30pm the owner/manager was out and had left his phone behind and was uncontactable. When we entered our room, the door fell off. The bar was closed, the restaurant was closed. We had travelled all morning and we had no welcome nor any refreshments. As the owner/manager was not available to talk to or make suitable arrangements, we left a message with his worker that he could call us and we left. We are still to hear from anyone. The room was advertised as a luxury double room, yet there was nothing luxurious, warm or welcoming about the room or any of the establishment. We had to carry our own bags in the pouring rain to and from the room. I will now have to try and recover my R750 deposit."
