Dunns Castle

Nestled in the heart of the Swartland at the edge of the unique mountain range that stands as an island, lies Piketberg, home to Dunns Castle. It was designed by Herbert Baker for George Dunn. Piketberg is about an hours drive from Cape Town and a half hours drive from the West Coast. It stands alone in the middle of undulating fields of wheat, green vineyards and flowering canola. Dunns Castle was built in the late 1890s and offers cosy rooms with Victorian finishes. Most rooms are complete with country dcor and fireplaces; these are double beds. At present we can accommodate 54 guests on a bed and breakfast or a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. There are 19 New Self-catering Units with secure parking which have recently been added. The castle offers a peaceful retreat from the busy lifestyle we all experience. Enjoy a refreshing drink on the patio and gaze out on the amazing view of the entire Swartland. Tulbach, Ceres, Citrusdal and the West Coast are nearby. Take a dip in the pool on those hot days.

"Though the owners and staff of Dunns Castle were very friendly and Dunns Castle itself is beautiful, the property and our unit was very neglected and not clean at all. I do not think Dunns Castle is good value for money.<br/><br/>"

  • "Peace and tranquility among bugs and beauty"

"Having lived in Piketberg I was always curious about Dunns Castle; what is the story behind the name? To my delight, the staff was very cheerful despite our late arrival, and helpful when I had absentmindedly forgotten some items at home. The room was surprisingly spacious and had great views over the fields. Piketberg can get extremely hot and the room was the perfect temperature and retreat. After an expedition to Piket-bo-berg, we came back to a freshly cleaned and cool room. Plus there is a revitalizing swimming pool. You will find yourself enjoying a glass of wine while the sun sets, looking out over the landscape. Dunns Castle blends so well into its natural setting, and as for its history, you will have to find out for yourself."

"It was beautiful. The venue is breathtaking. The staff very friendly and helpful. Bev is a gem! It would be nice for the self-catering rooms to have fridges but that wasn't too much of a problem. We will definitely come back here!"
