Assendelft Lodge and Bush Camp

Assendelft Lodge and Bush Camp is an upmarket luxury lodge in the Great Karoo. It is located near to Beaufort West, Leeu-Gamka, Laingsburg and Prince Albert (just 45km away). Come and experience one of the world's most unique arid zones and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Karoo - rest, relax, refresh and recharge your batteries.

Assendelft is the ideal overnight stop for long distance travellers. It offers four elegantly decorated double, air-conditioned bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Each room has its own private entrance with an outside patio where you can sit and enjoy a drink while you take in the surroundings of the Karoo or do some star gazing at night.

If you enjoy being close to nature, our tented chalets at the Bush Camp are for you. Each chalet has its own braai area and for larger groups, a communal braai area is available where you can sit around the campfire, under the stars at night. Wood is available from the lodge for making a fire or enjoying a braai. Lights in the chalets are solar powered and hot water is generated by donkeys.

Each tented chalet accommodates one to three guests in single or double beds and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Linen and towels are provided. Basic cutlery and crockery are available in each chalet. There is a self-service bar area located near to the fire pit and deck area, which is ideal for large groups to socialise together.

Some nearby attractions include relaxing and enjoying the Karoo, wandering around the farm, visiting the lonely grave of a British soldier, Pte. W Calver of the 16th Lancers, who died on Sep. 10, 1901. There is also a fossil trail where you can go to see where the therocephalians ("beast-heads") diictodons and Pristerognathu lived 265 million years ago.

In the quaint town of Prince Albert, you can visit the smallest wine estate in Africa, as well as fig and olive farms. There are also a number of restaurants and pubs to choose from. Or take a drive over the majestic Swartberg Mountain Pass, which is 48 km away, and visit the isolated wilderness area, known as "Die Hel" (Gamkaskloof), which is 59 km away. Meirings Poort, located an hour's drive from Assendelft, has breath-taking scenery, and the world-renowned Cango Caves are only 98 km away. The Karoo National Park, also only an hour's drive away is well worth a visit. Other nearby small Karoo towns include Matjiesfontein, Sutherland, Fraserburg, Williston, Carnarvon, Loxton, Victoria West and Beaufort West.

"Fireplace should not be "display only".TV should work. For the price, I would have expected more."

  • "Wonderful accommodation in the heart of the Karoo."

    08 January 2016

"Wonderful accommodation in the heart of the Karoo. The Bush Camp is a great experience and is situated in beautiful surroundings. We were received by the owner with great hospitality and welcomed by a beautiful sunset. Although I will not suggest this as an overnight spot unless you are familiar with Karoo animal sounds, the wind hustling through the tent and the noise of the water system. We therefore didn't get a great night's rest needed for the long drive ahead but certainly had a great new experience to add to our memory banks."

"I have driven to Cape Town and back from Johannesburg many many times in my life and stayed at many different places throughout the Karoo. I can easily say that every place I've stayed at has just been a place to rest my head and never been a pleasant memorable experience.<div><br /></div><div>At Asserndelft lodge however this was a surprisingly great change! Perfectly clean and well decorated rooms with great staff. The owner is very friendly and accommodating. The staff are very friendly. The breakfast was perfect and the price makes it all so much more suprising! From now on I will only stay there for my stop overs I have no need to explore different Accomodations in the Karoo any further</div>"
