Tenahead Mountain Lodge and Spa

Tenahead Lodge & Spa is situated very remotely, near the little town of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape. Nestled along the border of Lesotho, this 5-star country house is situated 2500m above sea level, earning it the title of Highest Mountain Lodge in South Africa. While the road to Tenahead is long and a little bumpy, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the magnificent mountainous landscape. While you will not need a 4x4 to reach Tenahead, a high clearance vehicle is strongly advised. When you reach Tenahead, you will be transported to another world. This exclusive lodge is best described by their slogan a heavenly place between sky and earth!

Tenahead was built from layered stone found in the area. This architectural aspect allows for harmony with the rocky surroundings. The lodge is surrounded by endless mountains. The views are spectacular! In Summer, wildflowers grow naturally in the rugged terrain, and birding is a major attraction. Youll be sure to meet their little mascot, the Drakensberg Rockjumper. Explore the great outdoors on one of their hiking trails. When theyve had rain, the waterfalls are a beautiful sight. In Winter, the occasional snowfall turns Tenahead into a Winter Wonderland.

The 7 en-suite bedrooms provide the ultimate in comfort. A cosy fireplace will keep you warm, while the view from the large bedroom window will leave you feeling like you are one with the mountains. Youll even be spoilt to these views from the bathroom. Expect a gourmet 5-course plated meal at dinner, and a mini buffet breakfast in the morning. Lunch is served from an a la carte menu. Add to your plush mountain experience and visit the on-site spa.

Day visitors are also very welcome at Tenahead Lodge & Spa!

  • "The perfect honeymoon"

    20 July 2015

"What an amazing destination. Not only is this remote location fairly easy to access but it offers visitors the opportunity to experience nature at its most pure andpicturesque. From the warm and welcoming staff members to the beautiful architecture of the lodge itself, Tenahead is a place I will be returning too for all of my life. We could not have asked for a more beautiful, breath-taking or inspiring experience. The food was delicious and our strict vegan diet was catered for beautifully. Thank you to all the staff members that made our stay as perfect as it was, namely Nolan, Shauna and Grace. We will be seeingyou soon."

  • "Wonderful.but"

"Wonderful place, great setting .The rooms are outstanding and the views to die for.<div>However, the food is simply horrible -squiggles of sauce/garnish/ gravy/ whatever do not make for a decent meal.A set menu with no choices provided. We had four thimbles of chicken which were rubbery and probably from a hen that died of old age.The pumpkin soup was edible. the desert a sort of jelly with cream topping - wouldn't pass muster at the Wimpy.</div><div>The staff were most friendly and helpful, but please engage a chef.</div><div><br /></div>"

  • "Exceptional, stylish retreat"

    19 December 2013

"A beautifully designed lodge, remotely situated and thrills getting there.Designed for tranquil times. We stayed two nights mid-journey, but it would make a special destination for, say, a week to read, walk, enjoy the scenery, perhaps work on a project.Warm people, atmosphere, log fires. Great for a private party but not if you about to party!Highly recommended."

  • "What dreams are made of"

    19 November 2010

"Where should I start? The setting of this establishment was specially build by God, just short of heaven. All our desires where fulfilled by the absolute fantastic staff of Nolen and Shauna. Jacques the 6 star chef has once again pushed the standard of cuisine to the next level. Our car broke down on one of our day excursions, and Nolan on his day off came to fetch us. He was even prepared to cancel their off week to assist me in arriving safely at the first destination where somebody... more"

I want to thank you all for making this holiday so special and I am sure we will meet up in the near future."

  • "WOW!!"

    16 December 2009

"There are not enough words to describe how special and magical Tenahead is! This place is SA's best kept secret and we wish we had known of it earlier! It was the highlight of a month long trip around Eastern Cape and we will try everything to visit there again. It takes a long time to get there no matter which city you travel from in SA, but it sure is worth every kilometre!!"
