• "Purple House"

    25 December 2016

"The only positive thing is that the owner is friendly. The place needs some TLC (Tender loving care) and a lot of cleaning. We found used soap in the bathrooms! Too many things to mention but I would not stay there again for even half the price. Luckily I was there for one night only.

Establishment Response:

I am sorry you feel that way that you do. You knew from the outset that the cottage is a backpacker style cottage with normal sheets and all the basics that you need is supplied to you at a budget price.
I allow kids that are able to sleep with their parents to stay for free, but not those that take up a bed for the night. The fact that you thought that your kids of about 11 and 7 did not have to pay was most probably annoying to you.
Nevertheless I take cognisance of the fact that you said the cottage was in your words dirty. I do all the cleaning work myself and yes...it is probably true that you found a bar of soap from the previous night and for that I apologise.
I will make sure that the cottage is clean everyday. And that there is no confusion over what age kid does or does not pay for accommodation.

Thank you."

  • "Not your ordinary B&B"

    04 January 2015

"We thoroughly enjoyed staying over at this very quirky, interesting and unique guesthouse! We very quickly felt like we had come to visit an old friend - Johann, the owner - with chats, laughs and fun.Johann also recommended and made a booking for us at the Laughing Likkewaan restaurant for dinner. We had a similarly wonderful experience at this interesting art gallery, bookshop and restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed Smithfield! It was worth the detour from the N1 as a stopover, and we might well be back for a longer stay."

  • "Pleasant stay"

    29 December 2014

"We had a pleasant stay in the Bluegum cottage which is just down the road from the Purple House. It's a pretty little cottage. The town is small and there aren't any good places to eat really, but it's quiet and peaceful."

  • "Purple people pleaser"

    03 April 2014

"An interesting house to stay at. Johann is very accommodating and easy to get along with. The food was good and there was more than enough for the meal. I like the fact that Johann joined me for the meals and kept company. I had a good hot shower and it was very quiet so I had a good night's rest."

  • "Good time"

    13 March 2014

"Johann made us most welcome, and we had a lovely overnight stay in a most interesting almost 100 year old house. To complete the evening Johann played his guitar and sang some of his own songs, which was awesome. Thank you, from Dave and Coleen ( Johannesburg )"

  • "Lovely"

    07 December 2013

"Very friendly reception by Johan, who assisted us with our frozen meat. Loooovely dinner! Garlic butter hake, mmmm! No frills, but very neat, clean and interesting. May be it will be a good idea not to have private toiletries in the guest bathroom."

  • "Baie dankie"

    15 July 2013

"Ons gesin van 5 het heerlik oorgebly by Purple House. Die fliek in die nuwe "movie-house" was baie goed. Johan het ons bederf met heerlike bobotie vir aandete en die ontbyt was ook 'n groot bederf. Baie dankie Johann."

  • "Great stay at Purple House"

    10 April 2013

"We had a very interesting stay at purple house. Had it all to ourselves for both nights, surrounded by artworks. Johan was never far away, always there to see that we were comfortable and not in lacking in needs. Dinner was out of this world, very healthily prepared and reasonably priced. All in all a very enjoyable stay."

    30 January 2013

"We stay at Purple House as a stopover on our way to our final destination. It was perfect for what we needed. The room was simple and clean with lots of art work to admire throughout the house. Johann is a good, friendly host and let us use the whole house even though we were just 2. Breakfast was very good."

  • "Starlit night"

    22 January 2013

"Friendly though definitely funky, this old style house, painted fuschia with orange pillars, is a veritable treasure trove of art and objects, many for sale. The small town offers little light pollution for clear skies and star gazing."

  • "Feeling at home"

    16 January 2013

"We had a great stay at the purple house. Johan let us use the whole house, the kids had loads of space to play. He was very friendly and prepared us a lovely breakfast. It is quite an arty place, like Johan himself. He even gave us a little guitar concert in the evening. We will definitely visit him again."

    29 December 2012

  • "Easy come, easy go"

    18 December 2012

"Very relaxing atmosphere, friendly host, good food. A historical building with lots of potential to become the most popular B&B in the Freestate."

  • "Beautiful, but require organisation"

    17 December 2012

"The guest house is situated in a beautiful setting, surrounded by peace and quiet. The house itself has beautiful art and interesting items. The one area though that needs attention in in the preparation, serving and organization surrounding meal times. Only 1 salt and pepper shaker for all guests to share, no coffee or juices offered with breakfast and supper, kids not 100% taken into consideration with meals."

  • "Quirky Purple"

    13 December 2012

"An unexpected delight in a small town in the southern Free State. The Purple House is a curious mix of the contemporary and nostalgia. Johann is an intruiging person who welcomes you as if you are one of his family. An interesting pit stop...Comfortable bed, hot shower, good food (catered for vegetarians)."
