Arumvale

Arumvale is a country house situated in the Hermitage Valley, offering self-catering apartments and separate cottages in a pastoral ambiance just 2 km outside Swellendam. Our guest units boast indoor hearths for winter evenings gazing upon the snow-capped mountain peaks, and barbecue facilities for those who wish to enjoy the tranquility and serenity of the late summer evening sunsets. We also have a rustic farm cottage on our premises overlooking a dairy herd field adjoining the Klippe River, with gas heated hot water and paraffin and candle lamps for a old world experience.

In addition to being surrounded by peaceful untrammelled nature, Arrumvale offers numerous outdoor activities within walking distance, including rock climbing, mountain hikes, bird watching, mountain bike trailing, canoeing, field rambling, swimming in the rock pools in the mountain gorge, horse riding in the Marloth Mountain Reserve, and historical heritage walking trails in one of the oldest towns in South Africa.

Further afield in the region, but within an hours driving, is the De Hoop Coastal Reserve, where pristine flora and fauna exist abounded by the Indian Ocean and from May until September the Southern right whale can be viewed, the region's famous coastal resorts of Arniston, with its turquoise sea waters, and Cape Aghulhas, the southern-most point of Africa.

We look forward to hosting you at our special country home.

  • "What's not to love"

    19 August 2020

"From the location, to the friendly owners and staff, made this getaway feel so homey. The views over the meadows of grazing cows at the foot of the snow capped mountains, from the comfort of our rooms, out of perfectly placed windows, was exactly what we didn't even know we needed. The accommodation is ideally placed to tackle the beauty of Swellendam. After three days of fun, I still feel like there is so much left to see and still to do and I am very sure I'll be back at Arumvale very soon."

  • "We'll go back!"

    25 March 2018

"Small touches like a braai (barbecue) ready to be lit and farm-fresh milk in the fridge put the cherry on top of a good find - we enjoyed our stay and Arumvale's Anneline Cottage lived up to expectations! Oh and the views of those mountains!Note that this is on a working farm and the cottage abuts a public gravel road - didn't bother us at all, just added to the charm!"

  • "Snow, Silence and Solitude"

    19 July 2017

"Stayed overnight in the Rustic Cottage a memorable experience. Beautiful vista. Overlooks pasture rather than garden.....positive, divorced from the main complex....positive, welcomed by Samantha.......positive, Wi Fi connection only if you are in the kitchen with your cell phone against the window.......positive, resulting in a lot of reminiscence. Firewood and indoor heating welcomed with rain throughout the night and the amazing sight of snow in the morning. Knowing that there is only a two plate gas stove available will assist in planning meals. There is a fine balance to maintain when rustic is considered. The only negative amongst a multitude of positives was the lukewarm shower in icy conditions. For the most though an experience that I would repeat at the drop of a hat."

  • "The view"

  • "Beautiful Setting"

    23 May 2017

"Loved our stay at Arumvale. Hosts were friendly and very welcoming. Absolutely stunning views. Our suite was lovely with a King size bed in a separate bedroom, fireplace in the lounge, kitchen with everything we needed and more. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Spectacular view"

    22 March 2017

"The gardens and views from the country house are stunning. We were disappointed with the size of the pool - it is more of a garden pond. George was very helpful and friendly though we did have problems with TV and dstv. A pleasant room with double bed and sleeper couches seem to be normal in all rooms."

  • "Stunning"

    13 February 2017

"Fantastic stop over on our way threw. Wow the views from the top room where something. Dairy farm next door was special. Plenty restaurants in town to choose from. Great county run in the morning too."

  • "Misrepresented but who cares"

    29 January 2017

"Let me make a couple of things clear. The accommodation states that it is a Country House. From a UK point of view it is not, it is a house in the country. The owner states that there is walking, horse riding etc. There is not, if you want to do these things then they are available in Swellendam and the B&B down the road can make the equivalent claims. With this in mind we turned up after a difficult flight and drive from Cape Town to discover a guest house with a tin roof. Sure our suite was expansive but all we wanted is a few days around the pool in a tranquil environment with 5* accommodation. Clearly this was not and my partner tried hard for a refund. This should have happened because the owner had misrepresented what we expected. We decided to stay one night and cut our losses. However the tranquility of the area was fantastic.<br/><br/>We played golf the next day and decided we would stay three days. The pool was a joke - it looked like a fish pond, the area around the pool was also a joke, sun only in the late afternoon and yet the view of mountains was captivating. We explored Swellendam - no fences around the properties, the food in town was outstanding, this was a place to remember. Begrudgingly agreed to stay the four nights that we had booked. <br/><br/>I think that the owner needs to be taken to task re his advertising especially - Country House and the activities available but everything else was great and we had a super experience<br/>"

  • "Amazing"

    21 June 2016

  • "Getting closer to nature"

    20 December 2015

"We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at Arumvale. Carol and George are great hosts. We stayed in Carol Suite which is an upstairs cottage. Well equipped with king size bed. Good quality bedding and pillows were comfy. Loved the prepped braai - all we had to do is light up and braai. Beautiful mountain views. Loved the seating area under the shady tree although the cushions could do with an upgrade. The pool is a plus on those very hot days. It is berry season in December so the traffic was a bit noisy with trucks and cars going to the neighbouring berry farms. We took the opportunity to visit the Bontebok Nature Reserve and the Marloth Nature Reserve - lovely. Great WiFi for my workaholic husband. A great choice for stressed out city dwellers."

  • "Great spot"

    18 January 2014

"Arumvale was super. Also, the only self-catering place that we've ever been to that was thoughtful enough to provide milk for tea and coffee! The place was cleaned daily and was beautifully decorated with a choice of books and magazines and in beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended."

  • "Excellent stay"

    30 October 2013

"We stayed for 2 nights in the Anneline Cottage which is perfect for couples. The cottage was very clean, well equipped and private. The views from the property are stunning and it was so nice to wake in the morning looking across to the mountains. We used the BBQ (braii) both evenings during our stay which was ready to go on our arrival. The following day on our return the BBQ had been spotlessly cleaned and was ready to use again. The weather during our stay was warm and sunny (shame as I wanted to use the lovely fire that is in the lounge, will have to return during the winter months).George was a charming host with excellent knowledge of the area etc. Thank you for a lovely stay."

    13 August 2012
