This farm is set in a traditional Karoo environment with historical structures from the previous century dating back 150 years ago still visible in several locations. Several Khoi San Bushmen drawings can be found.
Modderfontein farm is the highest point between Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1300 m above sea level. The Karoo is a semi-desert area, however Modderfontein farm has six natural springs on the farm and the water is of very good drinking quality. Our home is a place of true peace and tranquility. We invite you to escape the crowds of city life and come relax with us. We offer three comfortably furnished bedrooms, two of which have en-suite bathrooms and the other bathroom is opposite the third bedroom. We offer laundry and cleaning services to all guests. There are tea and coffee-making facilities in all rooms with homemade rusks. There is a self-catering fully equipped kitchen available for all guests.
The guest house is on a working farm with sheep, angora and cattle. There are various activities to fill up your days such as hiking, 4x4-ing, mountain biking, quad biking, donkey cart riding and birdwatching.
"On the first visit we were welcomed as strangers, and we enjoyed getting to meet Henk and Erika. 9 days later on our return trip we were received as though we were family. We will be back"
"The rusks, iced water and cold drinks in the fridge were very welcoming. 5 stars overall, aircon in the chalets would be great!"
"From the moment of Arrival, we were impressed. Erika is a brilliant hostess who made us feel very welcome. The chalet is well equipped with comfortable beds, and many surprise extras e.g. milk and cereal. The whole place was spotless, the setting and quietness marvellous. I will definitely recommend this venue to everyone who I know travels that route. Cheryl Kleyweg"

"This was the perfect stop-over on our way to Cape Town from Johannesburg. Our hostess made sure that we were comfortable. A cottage with 2 bedrooms, a kitchenette and lounge provided us with the comfort that we needed for our overnight stay. The beds had crisp bed linen and clean soft towels were provided. Dinner was delicious - we had the best fish we have ever tasted here in the heart of the Karoo. We were spoilt for choice for breakfast. Lots of attention to detail sets this stop-over apart from all the rest. Not forgetting the spectacular scenery that this home offers."
"An absolute gem find and unsurpassed hospitality! To all those travelers out there - do not miss this one (The Venison Pie is unbeatable)."
"Lovely place, wonderful hosts, good food, quiet and restful. Beautiful area and a beautiful part of our country."
