Clarendon Guest House invites you to spend your night with us in this historical building that was an orphanage for girls until 1962. We offer you Old World elegance with modern facilities. The orphanage was started in 1918 by Reverend MTR Smit when he took in 12 orphaned children. 120 girls were housed here until 1962. A new orphanage was built and in March 1962, they were moved to the new building complex.
The guest house offers 16 comfortable rooms; some have fully equipped kitchens and others share kitchens. Meals can be provided on request and is served in the dining room that has a warm inviting fireplace for those cold winter nights. There is ample parking in front and behind the building.
The area offers a variety of things to do. From skiing in the mountains in winter and hiking trails to enjoy in summer. Explore the rock art and Tractor Museum, or spend a leisurely day on the riverbed fishing.

"the old school charm and the friendliness of the owner"
"I would definitely stay there again, comfortable, clean and an overall a good experience."
"Stepping into Clarendon House I knew we have found something we have never seen before. NO guesthouse will ever be able to impress like this house. Add to this stunning setting of crystal chandeliers and polished wood and beautifully set tables ...for delicious breakfast or dinners as booked ...the gracious host Chris and you will never settle for anything else. We felt as if we have stepped back to a time when all was good and solid and exquisitely made and kept. And people were still offering service beyond and aboveLovely staff Lovely foodUnforgettable"
"really enjoyed the peace, hospitality and welcome "thoughts" of packs containing handwash, tissue, panado and biscuit or shower cap. The rusks and tea/coffee/ milk provided were also most welcome."
"Loved the friendliness, history and food. Place is a bit dusty."
"We were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Clarendon Guest House. We were welcomed personally by Chris, the owner, who showed us to our room and made sure we had everything we needed. <br/><br/>The house itself is steeped in history, and decorated with the most beautiful antiques. <br/><br/>Be sure to book in advance if you would like a meal. The breakfast was delicious, and excellent value for money!"
"Loved our stay, the history of the building, the furnishings and ambiance was wonderful - wished we could have stayed longer and dined in that wonderful colonial dining room."
"I stayed one night in July 2016 at the Clarendon Guest House, and will stay again when I next find Ugie a stopover. My comfortable self-catering room with its decor from a previous era was charming. The friendly and helpful welcome was a pleasure arriving late on a cold afternoon."
"Very nice rooms in a historic building with antique furniture. The history of the place really makes it unique."
"We enjoyed our stay very much. We were there for three nights. The rooms are spacious and the beds <g class="gr_ gr_540 gr-alert gr_gramm Grammar multiReplace" id="540" data-gr-id="540">sleeps</g> like your own. Chris is the most accommodating host and thinks of small little things before we as guests even asks for it. Everybody was very friendly. The breakfast and dinner were outstanding. I can highly recommend Clarendon Guest House when you need to stay over in Ugie.<br />"
"Charming host in a charming 100+ years old house with period furniture to match. Very interesting history. Comfortable overnight stay.<br />"
"Superb. Value for money. Chris is the perfect host. Fantastic breakfast."

"Baie dankie vir die gasvryheid en dat jy so goed na ons omgesien het. Die dekor en meubels is regtig indrukwekkend en mens kan sien dit is 'n leeftyd se bymekaarmaak van oudhede. Om alles te kroon is die prys net so "oud" soos die meubels! Voorwaar "a step back in time!"Dankie, Riette Buchner"
"We arrived there on Tuesday late afternoon and was meet by very friendly staff and owner. Our rooms were beautiful and had a lot of antique furniture, this was to gorgeous to sleep in. Our stay was awesome, nothing was a hassle and breakfast the next morning was well worth the price. Beautiful house, beautiful rooms, charming and quaint. I was really blown away with this accommodation. Anyone looking for a reasonable priced place to stay that is fill of history, you need to stay at Clarendon Guest House. We will be returning and so will a friend of mine who travelled with us. In fact she is going to be bringing her whole family back to stay en route to Durban next year. Thank you so much for an awesome stay."
"Very comfortable, like stepping back into another time zone friendly staff, fair value. Would stop again."
"A charming place full of authentic antique items and the history of the orphanage that was previously housed there. Mr Gouws and his staff were very hospitable."
"Chris Gouws went out of his way to make sure we had a great stop over. Tremendous amount of history at Clarendon Guest House."
"A very pleasant stay in an historic house. Well run."
"A very bad experience, the owner Chris was not kind to us, we had informed the guesthouse of our late arrival since we're were traveling from durban but he was not pleased with us coming late, was plain rude and did not welcome us in a proper manner. The establishment is very old and the owner had a decency to tell us that he was not expecting any nonsense from us as he was expecting people from his church, probably because we had arrived late the previous night. To us that was racist and we decided to leave we only stayed for 1 night and he didn't even bother to find out why we were leaving earlier than expected. I would not recommend the guesthouse to anyone."
"Very friendly reception in a very authentic historical building."
"Wonderful atmosphere, hospitality and food - our whole family had a most enjoyable stay! A big thank you to Chris Gouws."
"Although we had booked online and paid, we did not stay. On arrival the whole establishment was extremely cold. In the bedrooms we were shown, there were large gaps between the windows and frames and only two water bottles to provide any heat. The linen was probably clean but appeared stained. The kitchen was certainly not the cleanest that we had ever seen. All in all, we could not stay there."
"Our stay at Clarendon was very nice. The reception was friendly even though we arrived later than planned. It is spacious, clean and it took us 60 years back into an era where wood was appreciated and formed part of the décor around you. Keep this jewel for our children as very few will ever understand the value of Clarendon House."
"We were warmly welcomed to this beautiful guest house with so much history. Our hostess was very friendly, we had a wonderful dinner and enjoyed a quiet New Year's eve. The only negative is maybe that the bathroom needs some attention, but we understand the massive task of renovating this old building. We will most definitely return."
"We travelled from Durban to Port Alfred and Ugie was a perfect halfway stop. Our family stayed in a family room with optional self-catering facilities. We made our own dinner and had breakfast catered. The room was comfortable and the staff very friendly."
"We all received a warm welcome and our three young children were especially made to feel welcome. The family room we resided in sufficiently provided for our needs. This little neck of the woods is an undiscovered tourist haven, nestled in the mountains, with beautiful views and friendly people. We recommend a visit there."
