An Unforgettable Farm Lodge Experience
Join us at Penwarn Farm, located in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg, for a stunning farm lodge escape.
Rustic yet modern, Penwarn Farm Lodge can be found just 25km from the quaint, little town of Underberg in South Africa. As you drive down the Khyber Pass, youll be greeted with the all the beauty that Penwarn has to offer.
The farm lodge lies in an exquisite valley surrounded by lakes, and borders Highlands Farm which was established in 1886. Over 3400 hectares of land is farmed by the fifth generation of Nicholsons, raising cattle and sheep and planting maize and potatoes for the market.
Sharing the grasslands are zebra, hartebeest and blesbok. Birdlife is of abundance and the cranes and wild geese can be spotted from the comfort of your room. Penwarn truly is an animal enthusiasts paradise!
The ambience of the farm is relaxed, rustic, and modern, and is perfect for a variety of occasions including weddings, conferences, family adventures and romantic getaways.
Penwarn Farm Lodge has its own chapel, which is situated near the beautiful lake overlooking the Drakensberg. Within the venue, we also have the famous Penwarn Bar which offers guests a thirst-quenching drink and a place for a bit of banter.
We look forward to welcoming you to Penwarn Farm Lodge and providing you with an amazing farm holiday experience.
"Lovely place, warm welcome and friendly stuff"
"Aside from the most attentive staff, who really went out of their way to try and ensure that we were comfortable, we will note Penwarn in our list of destinations as one which we wont hurry back to visit. Certainly no effort to maintain it as a trout fishing attraction. Accommodation was very run down and in need of all round maintenance. Although we only opted for one meal in the dining facility, we were disappointed in any event - from an empty breakfast urn, to milk that had clearly been standing for a while, to dead flowers on the table....."
"A very quiet and picturesque place.Definitely the place to go to if you need to escape the city and hustle and bustle! We had a disappointing Sunday breakfast experience though! Wanted to spoil dad on Fathers Day with what we expected would be a typical farm breakfast!Only to be told: No omelettes, no cheese, no baked beans, no scones and no toast was offered to our table! So NOT worth the R85 per person we paid! This put a little damper on the weekend, but was still a pretty place!"
"We loved Penwarn. Really beautiful place. Great staff. We will definitely go back."
"The staff and owners are very welcoming, they made my stay with the family very homely. The food was good and the scenery was a breath taker."
"Everything was just wonderful, from the staff to the views. We will definitely be going back, for longer!"
"Only.the road from gate to lodge is a probleme with a car need a 4*4withs we had"
"Friendly staff money worth spent. I would go back again. People should be informed that the roads are not car friendly. I will go back in a 4 x 4 :-)"
"One of our memorable family holidays was here at Penwarn. The place is very quiet and relaxing. The staff are super friendly, special mention to reception staff. The games were some of the best activities we enjoyed. The room service is excellent everyday was like we were checking in.We recommend everyone to bring family to Pen warn cottages."
"We absolutely loved the cottage. Had all the homely comforts. We will definitely be back with friends and family"
"Penwarn has a beautiful setting with a nice view on the mountains which we were lucky enough to experience with some snow. Everybody was very relaxed, this saying its a very relaxing holiday with not much to do. The dirt road from the entrance to the lodge is very bad, and I suggest clients get warned before booking, as this makes the drove to do some horse and pony riding a no-go so we did not get to have that experience. The rooms and lights etc can do with some extra cleaning as well as the braai grid. All in all a nice short weekend relaxed getaway"
"This was a lovely quiet venue that met all our basic needs."
"Penwarn provides spacious, well-equipped, cosy + beautifully decorated country cottages. We were welcomed by super friendly staff + muffins in our cottage! We loved adventuring all over the farm, visiting the horse centre, vulture restaurant + animal farm. We felt so welcome + at home. We'll definitely be back!"
"What a awesome place, with very friendly staff. Highly recommended to go just to get away for a romantic weekend or with the family."
"THE SETTING IS BEUATIFULL!!THE STAF IS FRIENDLY AND ACCOMODATING!A MUSTWILL DEFINITLY COME BACK FOR MORE :-)"
"Website pictures and description was fabulous. When we arrived, we were informed that most of the trout died off in the drought, despite it being the main reason for our choice. The unit we stayed in was clean, but the front door was in a dire state of repair allowing the wind to penetrate into the unit cancelling the effort of the gas heater to keep the unit warm."
"I loved the farm and all the birds,it is beautiful !!.The road needs regular repairs and housekeeping"
"The hosts at Penwarn went out of their way to accommodate some of our peculiarities. Our stay was restful and most enjoyable."
"Ongelooflike mooi omgewing - 5 ster akkommodasie en diens"
"Loved the nature divine, the beautiful horses, game, extraordinary and abundant bird life, and all around peace. The manager and his wife made it absolutely extra special with their most warm hospitality. Thank you!"
"What a beautiful experience at Penwarn, super friendly staff and great scenery, will definitely be back. Regards Kavir"
"Lovely, peaceful and tranquility. we enjoyed our stay."
"Such a pity we only had two nights at Penwarn Country Lodge. It is a lovely place, in the middle of beautiful nature, with breathtaking views. We didn't even leave the property and spent most of the time walking around and admiring the surroundings. Will definitely come back."
"The Penwarn and Waterford farming operations are spectacular ( the dairy is massive) for anyone with an interest in agriculture. With a snow covered southern Drakensberg as the back drop - very scenic and wonderfully bracingly cold in the mornings! The birdlife is also amazing even in winter. There are literally hundreds of Grey Crowned Cranes, plus at least one nesting pair of Wattled Cranes I saw with quite a small chick; more Spurwing Geese than one has time to count and Vultures coming in to feed in large numbers including the Cape Vulture amongst many White Backed. Olive Woodpeckers in the Lodge garden pecking at the window frames while I was having breakfast. Serious Fly Fishermen need to phone the management direct before booking as the trout fishing was adversely effected due to a very warm and dry 2015 season."
"<p>We spentone night at Penwarn as an overnight stop. </p><p>The accommodation was clean, pretty and well kept. The farm and its facilities were ample and there was plenty to do. </p><p>A run with the farm border collie through the beautiful mist and horses in the morning was a highlight. </p><p>The only downside was that the food was average. I would definitely stay again but would perhaps look a self catering option. </p><p></p>"
"As a family we had an amazing break at the lodge, great facilities, even better setting. We were looked after and made to feel at home by everyone. <br /><br />We went for a break to relax and spend quality family time together and that is exactly what we achieved.<br /><br />Thanks to all at Penwarn, you will definitely see us again.<br /><br />Guy Wilson & Family <br />"
"<p>Our familyspent an amazing 5 nightsat Kudu House at Penwarn. The cottage exactly suited our needs with beautiful views of the Southern Drakensburg. The highlight for us was definitely watching the Crowned Cranes coming into roost at sunset, whilst sipping a glass of red wine....simply fantastic!</p>"
"Ons 2 het in Kudu gebly, dit is mooier as wat die fotos wys. Lekker rustige plaasatmosfeer en privaat.Dit is egter 'n 6 slaper en nie 'n 2 slaper nie en die prysaanduiding is nie reg op Safarinow nie. Baie lekker bad en baie lekker stort. Die eetgerei is gemeng en sal bietjie knap wees vir 6 mense.Die pad was volg gate, so maak voorsiening vir ekstra rytyd."
"This Lodge is located within beautiful rolling hills, with ponds and lots of birds. Unfortunately it is a bit worn down, with little attention to detail - in so far substantially overpriced."
"Nature is great, Penwarn is located beautifully. Accommodation is lovely. Dinner is very basic."
"The Drakensberg has many beautiful spots but Penwarn certainly deserves top spot in the rankings. The wide open spaces, the slopes where horses, cattle and buck and wildebeest roam freely; just incredible. The house with room for 2 couples and 2 singles, comfortable with 'view' from every window. The lovely breakfasts and home cooked dinners. The professional and friendly staff, always happy to assist.Nature, nature, nature.Real value for money, an escape from city life we will never forget."
"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Penwarn Lodge. The accommodation was super, staff very friendly, and food great....only wish we had had time to spend another night. Thank you."
"We had a great stay at Penwarn Country Lodge (The Log Cabin). It was so relaxing up on the hill with beautiful views and no one around. Lots of time to do nothing at all and just enjoy the quiet. The Log Cabin might not be to every city slickers taste - we loved it though not having electricity (there is solar energy available for the fridge and light if you really must) and only using the lamps and fire place to light the cabin.I would definitely suggest going on horseback around the lodge. All the staff are very friendly and attentive and happy to make suggestions/recommendations.We enjoyed our stay at Penwarn very much and definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the peace & quiet of nature."
"A lovely setting, beautiful rooms and wonderful people. I wish we could have stayed longer. Definitely worth a visit."
"Wonderful settings ,trout fishing superb, interesting horse riding in riverine savanna teaming with wildlife.Friendly and helpful hosts...we will be back. Food and pub were great !"
"It was a truly fabulous, relaxing and romantic get away for us. The food was devine, the rooms and the setting are beautiful. I also enjoyed the endless view of the mountains and the numerous lakes."
"We were very happy at Penwarn Country Lodge and enjoyed a lot the magnificient views, the animals around, the comfort, the very good food and the kindness of the owners and staff."
