Our peaceful valley resort, which is 22 km out of Underberg, provides the perfect location for a retreat from city life. Heres your chance to rest, listen to the river and the sounds of nature or spend some wholesome outdoor time with your family.
Families love it for the unhurried, Old World country atmosphere with days spent picnicking under the huge Oaks on the river island, boulder hopping in Thrombosis Gorge or just hanging about in boats. Honeymooners revel in the privacy of a luxurious suite and private deck just meters from the river bank. Fishermen love it for the unrivalled opportunities to catch rainbow trout along our 2.5 km stretch of river.
All our fully-equipped, self-catering units are situated just meters from the river bank with stunning views. All the units, except the log cabin, are equipped with log fires. All units have individual braai facilities. In winter a complimentary bundle of firewood is supplied on arrival and additional firewood is available to purchase thereafter. The units are serviced once daily in the mornings, excluding Sundays and Public Holidays. Should you require additional assistance, we can arrange to have a housekeeper available at an additional fee.
Activities at the lodge include bass and trout fishing, swimming, boating, tubing, canoeing, walking, horse riding and birding. We have an a la carte breakfast and lunch menu and a set two-course dinner menu available. Come and experience restoration of body and soul in truly lovely surroundings.
"The views are amazing. Beautiful little cottage. A little creeky but overall a great weekend away"
"Pet friendly ,quiet and comfortable accomadation ,staff always ready to help and please wherever they could provided a great 2 days out from the madding crowd."
"We've really enjoyed our stay at Umzimkulu.Having a real pet friendly unit with a fence was wonderful, Saarkie and Lienkie had a wonderful time."
"Great place to unwind and relax. Very friendly and accomodating hosts and loads to do for every age group and interest."

"we just loved our stay! We loved the Woodlands cottage and the lodge was wonderful. Excellent service and beautiful scenery. Our dogs had the time of their lives aswell. Highly recommended!"
"Umzimkulu Lodge has a beautiful , scenic, healthy environment with good service from the owner.<br />however pygmy cottage is in bad condition and lacks grill/baking cooking facilities. Cottages need major renovation. It was a pleasant stay if you can endure the run down cottages. But we still had fun and a wonderful time on the river, the walks are amazing - recommended stay if willing to compromise on rustic lodges.<br />"
"Good stay, unbelievable scenery and very good host in Stephen"
"We really enjoyed our stay in the pygmy cottage. There is lots to do in the area. The breakfast we had overlooking the river was awesome. Units are well kept and clean."
"Lovely place to visit.So peaceful."
"We spent a wonderful and relaxing family holiday over New Year in Woodland Cottage at the lodge - it was really well set up for a large family group with kids coming and going and lots of people gathered around the table for eating, chatting and playing games. Had great fun tubing down the river and the kids spent hours riding bikes and playing in the river. A great place to relax and reconnect for a few days. Staff and owners very welcoming and helpful."
"Definitely recommended and we will come again. Our cottage was clean, beds were very comfortable, everything well organised. The whole set-up was well done and our host Stephen was brilliant."
"We had booked the cottage with a steep stair but my wife was concerned that one of us would fall. The resort kindly upgraded us to the other single accommodation, a beautiful room in an amazing garden. We had a wonderful stay. Our only mistake was going to Underberg for lunch, the Lemon Tree or some such, which was awful. Thanks."
"We spent the long weekend in the Bower Cottage and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff and owner are very helpful and pleasant, the food is very good, both breakfasts and dinners, and anything you ask for, they ensure you receive. The accommodation was cosy but comfortably big enough. We had an awesome weekend."
"Just back from a fabulous two-night break at Umzimkulu River Lodge. I don't have enough good things to say. A magic location right on the river. Friendly super helpful staff, good, wholesome home cooked meals to order. The list goes on! Highly recommended!"
"My husband and I stayed at the Pygmy cottage and what a lovely little cottage it was. Although the Drakensberg was very dry and not like we expected it to be, the tranquility was awesome, just what we needed for our holiday. The hosts were extremely friendly and kind. I would definitely recommend this resort; we felt at home from day one."

"We spent an evening in Pygmy cottage and absolutely loved it. You truly have a piece of heaven and thank you for sharing it with us. I wish we could have stayed longer but we will be back in December with friends to enjoy it more. Thank you to Nuh and Bongani, you really do go the extra mile and are very friendly. I must say we especially loved the cats that curled up on our laps in front of the fire. Really made us feel at home."
"It was lovely and peaceful there with the sound of the river and birds. Perfect place to just relax and unwind. Pygmy cottage (the doll house) was really cute with everything you needed. Thanks Steve. Keep up the good work there. The cats were just as friendly."
"I had the best time away from the buzzing of the city; its nice and quiet at night. The rooms are very nice and tidy and its very good for the kids my boys liked it there!"
"An ideal breakaway from the stresses of Gauteng. It was great to arrive in the mist and sit around the cosy log-fire sipping a glass of red wine and sleep with the sound of the mountain stream in the background. We awoke to the lifting mist and calls of a red chested cuckoo and enjoyed the scenic 4 X 4 drive to the top Sani Pass via Himeville to visit the highest pub in Africa. When back at the lodge relaxed on the rocks in the river, swam and walked the area. Really a nice relaxing weekend."

"We enjoyed a very relaxing two nights at Umzimkulu River Lodge in the quaint Pygmy Cottage. I enjoyed the trout fishing even though the water was slightly discoloured due to recent rains. The Gorge fishing was particularly exciting."

"Pied Cottage is beautifully situated and airy, although cold, but the fireplace makes up for this. Very quiet, and good facilities. In winter quite dry and brown, but winter has its own kind of beauty: crisp, white frost in the mornings, lovely sunshine days."
