Matamba Bush Campsite

Built by campers for campers Matamba offers two exclusive upmarket bush campsites. Situated on a beautiful four-hundred hectares private game farm, two and a half hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Matamba is ideal as a weekend getaway or as a stopover on the way to Botswana.

Tau camp is spread over about four hectares, with the campsites and the facilities connected by paths winding through the open woodland. It has five individual sites; Drongo, Hornbill, Oriole, Kingfisher and Francolin, they are about two-hundred metres apart so are very private. Each site has a fireplace, water tap and power. There is power at the main bathroom and the kitchen with provision for campers to plug in an extension if required.

The spacious family bathroom is a thatch building, with existing rocks as the shower floor. Netting windows offer lovely views onto the surrounding bush. Gas geysers at all the units ensure an endless supply of hot water. There is an outside shower and an outside toilet both constructed around existing trees. The kitchen is also thatch with two washing sinks, an info area and a table and chairs for those wishing to swap travelling experiences.

Maras Camp is a private camp for one group only with 2 x private bathrooms. It is situated in a lovely thick woodland in the middle of the farm, it is built from natural materials and blends perfectly into the surrounding bush. The two outside family bathrooms are stunningly built around tall trees, each bathroom has a shower with rocks used as the shower floor, a flush toilet and basin. A gas geysers supplies hot water. The wash up area is built into a thicket of trees looking up to zebra plains . There is a large central fireplace and again firewood is supplied. There is no power at this camp.

Both campsites are unfenced allowing the game to wander freely through. It is common to find animals in and around the camps.

There are three waterholes and a natural spring, Kibu hide is a viewing deck two metres up in a wild Syringa tree, it looks over Zebra plains and a small waterhole. Ndege hide overlooks the spring, it is a thatch building on stilts and is a lovely place to spend a few hours.

There is no driving on the farm, but there are over sixty kilometers of sandy tracks to explore either on foot or on a mountain bike. (one needs to be experienced as the sand is thick in places) There are four marked trails, but the whole farm is open to be enjoyed.

There is a large variety of plains game on Matamba which are very relaxed and used to people walking, so it is often possible to get very close to them. Birding is also very rewarding with over 200 species recorded. With the lovely trees, wild flowers and grasses Matamba is the place to relax unwind and simply enjoy the bush.

"Arrived on Friday the 31st of October to a warm welcome from Alan's staff members and ready to assist us with all that was needed. Had a lovely three day stay. Ablutions (both under roof and open to the skies) spotless. Sites are kept extremely clean at all times. Didn't see much of the game but still good just to sit in the bush and listen to all the unfamiliar sounds."
