The Cottage

The Cottage looks out over the Hermanus mountains, from Green Mountain, which gave Vermont its name, all the way to Maanschynkop and beyond. It is surrounded by indigenous vegetation and the birdlife is varied and abundant.

This beautiful, comfortable self-catering cottage is ideal for a family of four or five. It has a main bedroom with a double bed and a kids bedroom with a double bunk and single bed. There is an open-plan kitchen and living room with smart TV, wifi and a CD player. The kitchen has everything you'll need for self-catering and beautiful, crisp white linen and bath towels are provided.

The cottage is immaculately furnished with comfortable couches, beautifully dressed beds and even a dining room table for those family dinners. The barbecue area comes with wood for the first night and is secluded, cosy and private. There is a small dam on the property for swimming which is filled from a bore hole; the water has a high iron content which stains, so pack an old swim suit.

The closest beach is Breakfast Bay. It's quite a long way back up the dune after a day of swimming, snorkelling, fishing or exploring rock pools, but the small, protected beach is very popular and worth a visit. Onrus Beach is where the Onrus River runs into the sea; this forms a lagoon which kids love. The beach is beautiful and the waves are great, but the currents can be dangerous. Ask the closest surfer to show you how the currents run. The Vermont Salt Pan is a five-minute walk from the cottage and a must-see for bird lovers.

Here you can kick off your shoes in the quiet, comfortable surroundings and enjoy the tranquility that this quaint cottage offers.

  • "Stunning Vermont"

    13 January 2020

"We absolutely loved every minute of our time in Vermont and this beautiful cottage. Our hosts were so friendly and extremely helpful going out of their way to guide us around Hermanus and the surrounds. The cottage catered so well for our family and was extremely comfortable. The nature and views around us was stunning. We even woke up one morning with a turtle in our room. We have already booked our next visit to The Cottage."

    02 April 2018

"It has everything you need and is very comfortable. It is such a pity that we were only staying for one night. I would really recommend this cottage."

  • "Sadly disappointing"

    22 January 2018

"We were looking forward to this stay and when we arrived, it seemed that Petro was not expecting a diverse group. She barely greeted us and hardly showed us around the place properly. When we asked her to help us with the oven that wasn't switching on properly, she seemed irritated and kept swearing under her breath! Based on previous reviews, the oven has been a problem for a few years but it becomes the guests problem when it isn't working? I was surprised to read that other guests found her hospitable and friendly. She forgot to turn the geyser on until we asked her, she never asked us once if we needed anything during the weekend and seemed really relieved when we left. She could barely look at us without running off! It was a really sad experience for our group. We left things cleaned before our departure but she wouldn't even come and collect the keys from us when we needed to leave. It was very obvious that she was uncomfortable with our mixed group of guests... perhaps my name is misleading but if my suspicion that bookings are accepted based on the perceived race of the guest, then this is a sad reality.I make all my bookings through SafariNow and this is the first time that I have been extremely disappointed with the reception and attitude of the hosts. Pity that I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone I know, nor will I return again (I probably have my name blacklisted there already)."

  • "A little piece of paradise!"

    08 January 2018

"The Cottage and surrounds was absolutely magnificent! The Cottage is very well appointed. The only thing that needs seeing too or hopefully changing is the gas stove / oven. Managed to work the stove but oven impossible. The bird life is in abundance. We will definitely love to go back again soon. We didn't spend nearly enough time there."

  • "Nice place but a few quirks to negotiate"

    03 October 2017

"The Cottage is a lovely place in a beautiful setting, but with some quirks. Roosters on the property make it impossible to sleep after around 4 to 4:30am. There is also a lot of bird activity (I think guinea fowl, not sure) in all the trees surrounding the house so they are very noisy at 10, 11pm or maybe around 1am depending on their mood. There are also 2 big dogs and while they are adorable, they tend to hang around you and the house, sometimes inside the house, constantly. Meals at the firepit or outside tables and chairs involved constantly sussing them away from the food; one even used the fire pit area for a toilet while we were there cooking our food. The house has a few quirky appliances; we didn't even try to figure out the stove and managed with the microwave and the TV; all older appliances. Nice place in a nice setting, but with a list of quirks to negotiate."

  • "Everything you need and more"

    08 September 2017

"The cozy cottage is very homely. Everything you need and so much more. Little extras like blankets, soap in the bathroom, full dstv, and lovely outside area with braai. Could do with a hairdryer. But that is it. The rest was perfect. Very well done!"

  • "The Cottage"

    17 July 2017

"I loved the fact that we were alone, so we had privacy. The house was cosy and warm and the outdoors were very enticing, having all those paths. We could go for walks and use the grass for picnics. The outdoor braai is also situated at a good spot with good lighting for night time. The only thing that can be improved is the fact that the premises was totally dark at night. The parking for the car was also totally unsafe. So in future please try to have a garage built in for the car."

  • "Brilliant stay"

  • "Cosy cottage..."

    01 November 2016

"A great getaway for those who love nature and want to be close to Onrus. A cosy cottage on owner's premises, which has it's own privacy. Relaxing big bath. Loved hearing the frogs at night. Only recommendation is the microwave and stove may need tlc or a to be replaced. Our little boy loved the garden setting and the birds that came to visit each morning."

  • "Total peacefulness"

    29 March 2016

  • "Peaceful"

    23 March 2016

"We really enjoyed our long weekend at The Cottage in Vermont (2 adults + 2 teens). The fynbos garden setting is lovely and the view from the french doors onto the garden and mountain were beautiful (especially liked the frog croaking occasionally at night).<div>The teens were delighted to find a cupboard stocked with games and another with DVD's, while my husband and I enjoyed some of the books we found in the cottage, as well as the DSTV. </div><div>The kitchen is well equipped, although I was afraid of using the gas oven which is something I have not used before. The gas stove (hob) was easy and the microwave could also grill, so we were fine. The recycling bins were much appreciated. We also loved all the toiletries offered in the bathroom.<div><br /></div><div>We took a walk down the road to the salt pan and enjoyed all the birds there. The Hermanus Country market was well worth the visit too.</div><div><br /></div><div>All in all, a most enjoyable and relaxing time.</div></div>"

  • "Blissful midweek"

    12 February 2016

"<p>We were 3 adults and 2 children aged 4 and 2. The peace and tranquillity of the surroundings is something we'll definitely miss. Long lazy swims in the dam, watching the birds stop by for a bath or drink ... Loved listening to the birds sing (morning and night) and the garden filled with butterflies was a beauty to behold.</p><p>Loved the friendly dogs as well as the generosity of the hen who laid fresh 2 fresh eggs for us each morning :) Braai area is so cool ... </p><p>The cottage was well equipped and the soap, bubble-bath and lotion in the bathroom was specially appreciated. Microwave isn't the easiest to figure out but we managed to warm up what was needed. </p><p>If we HAD to choose a negative, it would have to be the ever-present flies but again, the cupboard stocked with candles help us keep them at bay.</p><p>Would love to visit The Cottage again soon !</p>"
