Three hours drive from Gauteng, near a little town called Volksrust, lies a gem of mother nature that is well worth exploring. Its a place that has been blessed with abundance, where waterfalls flow with the changing of seasons and black eagles soar above your head. Where you cannot help but be awed to silence, this is the world of Three Provinces.
The farms Waterval and Schuilhoek are situated at end of the great Drakensberg escarpment, and this is where the three Provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State officially meet, on top of a sheer cliff, in a masterpiece of nature, hence the name Three Provinces. 3 Provinces 4x4 Adventures offers four trails, namely the 3 Provinces Trail, the Tierkloof Trail, Bobbejaankrans Trail and the Roodedraai Battlefiels Trail.
Accommodation is offered in Rock Cabins, Lodge Cabins and also two campsites, the Rooibektiptol Campsite and the rustic Bush Camp. The cabins provide the comfort of luxury accommodation in the sweet silence of nature next to a rippling stream between mountains. The fireplace will keep you cosy and warm during the unpredictable high field cold weather. The cabins are located 2 km from the farmyard and 4 km from the campsite, and are fully equipped for self-catering. Braai facilities are available and wood can be bought at the farmhouse.
The Rooibektiptol Campsite offers unspoilt nature at the foot of cliffs next to a rippling stream and will assure you the relaxing peace and quiet you were looking for. A short hiking trail in the ravine next to the Rooibektiptol campsite will take you to an ideal sundowner spot. The campsite boasts hot water, but no electricity, and a generator provides light in the ablutions.
The more rustic Bush Camp is what you will choose if you really want to get away and do not want to see another soul nearby for quite a while. There are no facilities at all at this campsite. It is located under big shady trees, with a lasting stream running next to the site. A 4x4 vehicle is required in order to reach the Bush Camp.
Other things to do include hiking trails, mountain biking, angling, canoeing, clay pigeon shooting or bird-watching, and with the changing of seasons when the small waterfalls flow in all the ravines, you can also enjoy the waterholes as the most romantic splash pools.
Please note that a high ground clearance vehicle is essential to reach the cabins and camping grounds. It is best if it is a 4x4 vehicle, especially when it is raining.
"Had a relaxing short weekend stay. Great trails the establishment was exactly as advertised. Great fireplace inside."
"The Rock Cabin is great and the fire place made it so much better as the weather was wet and cold. This will be a place I will return to for a longer stay. The 4x4 routes are well worth tacking on and the map is well marked and illustrated."
"Wat 'n "great" plek om te ontspan en die natuur te ervaar. Die 4x4 baan laat adrenalin pomp en word aanbeveel vir enige een wat die moed het. Dit was absoluut "awesome". Die gasvryheid is onoortreflik gewees. Dankie Ronel and Herman!"
